SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A collective of conservation organizations filed lawsuits Thursday against San Diego County and its board of supervisors for approving a controversial housing development in the Otay Ranch community, with the groups claiming that the development endangers wildlife and the development's future residents. The project known as Adara was approved last month with a 3-2 vote and involves construction of more than 1,000 homes and a commercial village core, along with an elementary school, fire station, sheriff's office, trails, electric vehicle charging stations, solar panels and more than 700 acres of open space and parks. Environmental groups contend that its location, between the city of Chula Vista and rural community Jamul, is home to several endangered and protected plant and animal species and is at exceptional risk for wildfires. Plaintiffs include the Center for Biological Diversity, Preserve Wild Santee, the California Chaparral Institute, Endangered Habitats League, California Native Plant Society and the Sierra Club. ``Building houses in this fire-prone place will put people at risk, and it'll wreak havoc on golden eagles and other wildlife,'' said Peter Broderick, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity. ``By approving this sprawl project, officials have put both homeowners and wildlife in danger. They've dealt a big setback to sustainable development in San Diego County.'' In their complaint, the plaintiffs referenced county data identifying ``22 special-status plants and 28 special-status wildlife species'' on the project site. They also allege that the area is especially prone to wildfires, which was noted by Supervisor Dianne Jacob in her dissenting vote on the project. The complaint states the area ``has burned at least 17 times in the last 100 years'' and is ``at serious risk for fast-moving, wind-driven fires.'' The site's steep terrain would make suppressing fires difficult, and homeowners would only have one evacuation route available, according to the plaintiffs. Peter Andersen, chair of the Sierra Club's San Diego Chapter, called the project ``a fire trap that endangers all East County residents, contributes to severe traffic jams and destroys multiple species' habitat,'' while Richard Halsey of the California Chaparral Institute said ``History has shown that during a wind-driven wildfire, developments like this one in a known fire corridor can and have been destroyed by embers flying a mile or more ahead of the flame front. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 44-year-old man suffered a serious cut on his hand early Monday morning when he was attacked by a woman with a knife after parking his car in the City Heights area, police said.It happened shortly before 12:10 a.m. in the 4900 block of University Avenue, east of Euclid Avenue, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 44-year-old man had just parked his car on University Avenue when a woman in her 20s walked up to him and said he owed her some money, Buttle said.The woman then tried to stab him in the neck, but he raised his hand and she cut the webbing of his hand, slashing an artery, the officer said.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injury, which was not believed to be life-threatening, Buttle said.The suspect was last seen walking southbound on 50th Street from University Avenue. She was described as a Hispanic woman with tattoos on her face. No detailed clothing description was immediately available. 970

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 66-year-old man was hospitalized Saturday morning with wounds he suffered in a stabbing in the Mira Mesa neighborhood of San Diego and a 19-year-old suspect was in custody.The victim was walking in the area of Westview Parkway and Galvin Avenue about 9:10 p.m. Friday when he got into an argument with the suspect, who stabbed him three times, then ran away through the parking lot of a business, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The victim was stabbed in the chest and suffered cuts to his stomach and finger. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries, Heims said.Police searched the area and located the suspect, identified as Dejon Heard, and took him into custody, Heims said.Anyone who witnessed the stabbing was asked to call San Diego police Northeastern Division detectives at 858-538-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580- 8477. 929

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was stabbed through his car's open window Sunday in City Heights, and the suspect was still at large, police said.The victim was sitting in his car on Menlo Avenue north of El Cajon Boulevard around 12:20 p.m. when another man approached the car and stabbed him through the window, San Diego police Officer Sarah Foster said.The suspect, described as an Asian man in his 40s, ran away. The victim was taken to a local hospital for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, Foster said.Police are investigating. 573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A spokesperson for the County of San Diego said over two days, they have received approximately 580 complaints of businesses and entities not following the proper restrictions under the purple tier.The county has already sent out dozens of cease and desists orders since Monday. That includes at least two churches, Foothills Christian Church and Awaken Church, but the warnings are not stopping some churches from shutting down indoor operations.Since the pandemic began, Awaken Church has received two cease and desist letters. Once in July for its Balboa Campus, and the latest on Monday for the Carlsbad location, but it appears the church has no intentions of shutting down indoor services.A statement posted on the church’s website said in part, “In keeping our First Amendment right, we will continue to minister to those who are the most affected by all the COVID-19 lockdowns. Specifically tending to those who are struggling with depression, anxiety, hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, and addiction.”Bishop Arthur Hodges is a Senior Pastor at South Bay Pentecostal Church. As bishop, he oversees more than 100 churches in Southern California, including 25 in San Diego County.“About 50 percent are electing to remain indoors for worship,” he said. “About 30 percent are outdoors, and 20 percent are online only.”Hodges has taken the fight to stay open to the U.S. Supreme Court once, and it about to again, hoping a ruling could benefit all houses of worship nationwide.“We are filing either today or tomorrow back in the Supreme Court to reopen churches and for our constitutional guarantees to be recognized,” he said. “We are hopeful for an expeditious ruling, and we think it’ll be favorable to churches, and that’ll affect churches not only in California but across the nation.”A county spokesperson said if a cease and desist order is ignored, the next step would be a closure order. After that, law enforcement is asked to get involved by giving citations with a thousand dollar fine for each violation; then the case goes to either the San Diego District Attorney or City Attorney.In a video posted to the Awaken Church website in August, two church pastors explained why they believe religious services are essential, explaining the risks to their congregants’ mental health.It’s something we’ve heard from other religious leaders, like the lead pastor of Skyline Church, Dr. Jeremy McGarity.“We can’t stand by and not help people,” said McGarity. “We realized we can protect the most vulnerable and have services at the same time.
