SAN DIEGO, Calif. — For months, we’ve seen face masks in places they shouldn’t be: storm drains, streets, beaches, and parks.Now, we’re learning just how many could be flooding our oceans.“Once plastic enters the marine environment, it’s very difficult to move," said Dr. Teale Phelps Bondaroff, director of research for OceansAsia. The marine conservation group has been tracking the number of face masks washing up on a remote island south of Hong Kong since the pandemic started. “About six weeks after COVID hit Hong Kong, so late February, we began finding masks, and lots of masks," said Bondaroff. “What’s remarkable is we weren’t finding face masks before COVID.”Masks are made with polypropylene, which Bondaroff describes as thin fibers of plastic."The fact that we are starting to find masks that are breaking up indicates that this is a real problem, that microplastics are being produced by masks," he said.These tiny pieces of plastic can remain in the ocean for hundreds of years, threatening fish and even polluting the air.“The question that we couldn’t answer was how many are entering our oceans? We just didn’t know," said Dr. Bondaroff. OceansAsia launched a study to find the answer and recently shared its findings. Of the estimated 52 billion masks manufactured globally in 2020, it's believed 1.56 billion will enter our oceans this year, resulting in an additional 4,680 to 6,240 metric tonnes of marine plastic pollutionBondaroff says the report used a conservative loss rate of 3 percent, and the average weight of 3 to 4 grams for a single-use polypropylene surgical face mask, to arrive at the estimate.“The 1.56 billion face masks that have entered our oceans in 2020 are there for the long run. They will remain in the ocean for 450 years or more, and they’ll break into smaller pieces.”The report notes global sales of face masks surged from around 0 million in 2019 to 6 billion in 2020.“That’s important, we need to keep people safe, but at the same time that has a lasting impact on our environment, and we’re seeing that on the beaches," said Bondaroff. And he says, unfortunately, this problem makes up only a small fraction of the plastic pollution invading our oceans.The report asks people to wear reusable masks whenever possible, dispose of masks responsibly and reduce their overall consumption of single-use plastic. It also calls on governments to:Implement policies designed to encourage the use of reusable masks, such as releasing guidelines regarding the proper manufacture and use of reusable masks.Foster innovation and the development of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic masks.Discourage littering by increasing fines, and educate the public about responsible ways to dispose of masks.Repair and improve waste management systems to reduce losses and spillage. 2840

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Five years since it was last open to the public, the iconic "Plunge" swimming pool is finally set to welcome San Diegans at Belmont Park."Oh, we're so excited. It's highly anticipated," said Belmont Park spokesperson Michelle McKee.The pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014. Work finally began in earnest in 2017, tearing out much of the Plunge infrastructure, while trying to maintain a link to its historic nature."It was a wonderful pool," McKee said. "We wanted to maintain the structure of some of those elements, so that remains here in the pool."A signature element, a large mural by the renowned artist Wyland, had to be removed. In its place is a new, bright, open look. Windows surround the pool, giving swimmers a view of the ocean. A retractable roof will help control the climate inside the glass space.The high-end gym company "Fit" is building a club on the upper floors. Fit will manage the pool. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As protesters gather across the country to spread the message that black lives matter and there is a problem of police brutality against black people, not everyone is ready to join in the marches, but there are other ways to help the combat racism. “To make change, to build a movement, it takes all sorts of action. Everyone doesn’t need to go in the streets,” said Dayo Gore, UCSD Associate Professor in Ethnic Studies and Critical Gender Studies. While many have said they want change both verbally and through social media, she said people of color want that support to be taken to the next level. “This is not enough, your apology is not enough, feeling sorry is not enough, feeling my pain is not enough, I need some actual real change,” she said. To get that real change, people can use their voting powers to elect officials who will be an advocate, which is a point President Obama made in a publication addressing how people can make a difference in combating racism. He also noted that when making demands for officials, be specific with what you’re asking so it’s harder to ignore. Gore emphasized that point, citing specific examples of room for change in the San Diego community. She suggested a community review board that’s independent of the police department to review activity and oversee actions taken by police. She also said funding within the police department could be reevaluated. “Funding other things that will make communities more viable and able to survive, instead of simply policing communities,” said Gore. She also said in order to help get rid of racism, it’s important to first acknowledge there is an issue and educate yourself. “It starts with understanding what the problem is, and then figuring out where you best can raise your voice,” she said. She said another active step to take is speaking up among peers if someone says something racist, even if it’s uncomfortable. “When you’re hanging out with friends, do you say something when people say things racist or make assumptions based off the color of their skin?” she questioned. Gore also suggested people find groups in the community to both follow and support financially. SAN DIEGO, California —An 81-year-old woman was arrested at the Tecate port of entry Wednesday, carrying 92 pounds of heroin valued at more than 0,000. “The cartels will try and manipulate anyone to smuggle their narcotics through the ports of entry,” said Pete Flores, the San Diego Customs and Border Protection Director of Field Operations. “CBP officers are aware of the many tactics used by the cartels and remain ever vigilant to stop anyone attempting to smuggle narcotics.”CBP officers working at the Tecate border crossing encountered a 81-year-old woman, United States citizen when she entered the U.S. driving a 2011 Chrysler 200 at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. A CBP K-9 team was screening vehicles as they waited in line for inspection when the detector dog alerted to the driver side rocker panel.CBP officers referred the vehicle for a more in-depth inspection and discovered and extracted a total of 34 wrapped packages of heroin from the vehicle’s rocker panels.
