SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There is a new effort to bring more customers to restaurants struggling in downtown San Diego due to the coronavirus pandemic.Beginning at 12 p.m. Tuesday, 700 discounted gift cards will go on sale for 40 downtown restaurants, stores, and coffee shops. Patrons can pay for the card but will get a value in what will be called the "Downtown Loyalty" program.The extra per card is being added by the City Center Business District and local philanthropic groups.Sarah Brothers with the Downtown San Diego Partnership said this will help make up some of the restaurants lost revenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy offloaded 5,100 pounds of seized cocaine Friday, worth an estimated wholesale value of million.The drugs were brought off Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Edmonton at Naval Base San Diego.The crews aboard the HMCS Edmonton were able to capture vessels smuggling the drugs in the Eastern Pacific in 49 days, detaining eight suspected smugglers.“Criminals don’t recognize international borders,” said Vice Adm. Linda Fagan, USCG Pacific area Commander. “I am particularly just excited to see this level of effort. It is a really hard mission to execute.”A U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement attachment was on board the Edmonton and the crews worked hand in hand as one team to make the drug busts.Once the drugs are offloaded, they will be turned over to the DEA. 837

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This year Comic-Con celebrates its 50th anniversary. Only five people have attended the convention every single year. One of them is noted author and television writer Mark Evanier.Evanier began writing comic books when he was a teenager in the 1960's, including the comics featuring characters like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. His mentor was comic book legend Jack Kirby, who created or co-created many of the genre's most famous characters, such as Captain America, the X-Men, and the Incredible Hulk. It was Kirby who first told Evanier that a group of fans in San Diego were planning a comic convention at the El Cortez Hotel."I thought it was a great idea," Evanier told 10News in an interview from his office in Los Angeles. "I had no idea it would get as large as it did. I thought maybe we'll have 400, 500 people there."While Evanier thought it would be a niche convention, even in its early days Kirby saw the potential. "He said this a long time ago when this was a nutty idea to say. He said Comic-Con is going to take over the city of San Diego each year," Evanier recalled.Early supporters of the convention included Marvel creator Stan Lee and science fiction author Ray Bradbury. Comic-Con moved into the San Diego Convention Center in 1991, soon expanding to take over the ballrooms at the surrounding hotels.Evanier has had a big role at the convention over the 50 years. He is a frequent moderator of panels and a guest of honor at many events. He believes the convention will remain in San Diego for the long term (Comic-Con International recently signed an extention through 2024). This is despite the fact that Comic-Con is facing growing competition for the biggest stars and events. Other conventions have launched in cities across the country, and some companies, including Disney, have created their own events. "Yes, there are conventions that are trying to be bigger or wish they could be Comic-Con," Evanier said. "Those are all commercially run. The Comic-Con we go to in San Diego is a non-profit organization."Evanier is scheduled to moderate more than a dozen panels during this year's anniversary convention. 2171

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thirty years ago, Officer Brian Hardy had an idea. Hardy told his chief, "Chief, I have this crazy idea. Let's put teddy bears in a police car and bring them up to Children's Hospital. I think the kids would really get a kick out of it."Hardy was just a few years into being a member of the Coronado Police Department. He got the idea when, during a visit to Rady Children's Hospital, he noticed the toy collection bin."I asked the nurse at the station there why are there so few toys and she said donations are way down this year. We don't have a lot of toys for the kids in the hospital," said Hardy.Hardy bought the first twelve bears himself. Then, the teddy bear drive started to spread to other law enforcement departments across the county.They have collected as many as 75,000 teddy bears and a huge caravan delivers bears to Rady Children's Hospital every December.Hardy said he'll never forget the impact bringing a little joy to one terminally ill child had on his fellow officers."This little girl was maybe 4, 5 years old and all those cops walked out of there crying their eyes out," said Hardy.A few years later, Hardy found himself on the other side of things when a doctor at Rady told him his 2-year-old daughter's appendix had burst."He said my daughter's very sick she may not make it till morning, but he says, 'We're going to do our best to save her life,'" said Hardy.They did and it happened to be the morning of the teddy bear caravan.Hardy remembered, "It was like an episode of the 'Twilight Zone.' Things were turned around and I was in the hospital and the cops were coming with teddy bears."Hardy has received many thank you notes over the years, but it's what one girl told him a few years ago that has stayed with him."She comes running up full clip and she says, 'You gave me a teddy bear when I was 5 years old,'" Hardy said. He said the young woman now in her 20s told him, "I never forgot that." Now, because of the pandemic, instead of collecting piles of bears, they are encouraging people to donate money to buy bears that go directly to the kids.Officer Hardy is retired now, but still involved and has this message for the many generous donors."If you could see what we see, these children just light up when you bring them these bears," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This is the time of year that retailers usually announce how many workers they'll be hiring for the holiday season, but that's been slow to happen in 2020, according to a new report.Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas released a list of about 35 major chains and delivery services, with only seven reporting how many they plan to hire. It says big box chains such as Macy's, Target and Kohl's have still not made their plans public. Firm CEO John Challenger said companies normally start announcing hiring plans after Labor Day. "They're deferring those announcements because they just don't know where they stand," he said. Challenger said retail spending is shifting more dramatically online, given the pandemic. He said that will create a new demand for jobs through distributions centers as opposed to retail stores. The report notes that Amazon has been hiring new people throughout the pandemic, which could explain why the online retail giant only plans to add 100,000 jobs this holiday season, down from the 200,000 it added last year. The report says UPS plans to hire 100,000, up for 95,000 last year; while FedEx will add 70,000, up from 55,000 in 20`19. Challenger said he still expects retail hiring to increase over the holidays because this is their biggest time of year. He said, however, that the jobs may be different in store - from temperature takers to curbside delivery people. Challenger said the competition will be quite keen amid double digit employment, with information potentially limited. "You need to be out there right now looking to get these jobs, talking with retailers, letting them know you're interested, because they'll make their hiring and then it will be more, catch as catch can," Challenger said. The uncertainty has also extended to Main Street. Luisa Jackson, a co-owner of Earth's Elements, a gift and beauty boutique with locations in Little Italy and Carlsbad, said normally this time of year is about planning for the holidays. In 2020, it's about surviving amid a global pandemic. "It's just a lot of uncertainty and we also don't know about how COVID is going to impact the fall," said Jackson, who noted the chain does have three jobs currently open, and plans to staff up more for the holidays. Challenge Gray's report says retailers added 712,000 jobs nationwide in 2019. It did not make any predictions as to the number in 2020.
