GUANGZHOU, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural Forum opened Saturday in the southern city of Guangzhou with leading mainland and Taiwan representatives urging deeper economic ties and cooperation in green energy.This year's forum, a regular event between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) Party, focuses on cross-Strait cooperation in green energy, energy conservation and environmental protection.Wang Yi, director of the Taiwan Work Office of the CPC Central Committee, said the forum commenced as the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties achieved new progress. Meanwhile, Taiwan is also taking measures to restructure its economy and stimulate development," Jia added.He noted that cross-Strait economic cooperation still had much room to grow, especially in the science and technology fields.Jia said the new energy and environmental protection sectors could provide breakthroughs for promoting cross-Strait science and technology innovation.He hoped businessmen and experts would provide useful proposals regarding cooperation in technology research, intellectual property rights and fostering talent.More than 400 people from Taiwan and the mainland attended the forum on Saturday and Sunday in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong Province.The event is the sixth of its kind since the forum was first held in 2006.
ASTANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Friday evening for a two-day state visit to Kazakhstan.Hu said in a statement released upon arrival at the airport that, with the effort of both sides, his visit would be a total success and help advance the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan to a new stage.During the visit, Hu will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and meet with parliament and government leaders.The two sides will outline the future development of bilateral links. They will decide on the key tasks and areas of bilateral cooperation in the next stage and exchange views on major international and regional issues of common concern. SHENYANG, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China mobilized helicopters for the first time in a highway medical rescue drill in northeast China' s Liaoning Province, the provincial bureau of transport said Thursday.The rescue drill took place at 10 a.m. on the Shenyang-Dalian highway where a bridge collapse and traffic pile-up purportedly injuring dozens was simulated.Two helicopters, an S-76 from China' s Ministry of Transport and an Mi-17 from Shenyang Military Command, were dispatched to rescue those acting as wounded in the blocked section inaccessible to rescue vehicles.The rescue workers were airlifted to the crash site and successfully extricated two "trapped" bus passengers within three minutes before transporting them to nearby hospitals.More than 300 people participated in the drill organized by China' s Ministry of Transport and the provincial government of Liaoning.

HONG KONG, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A helicopter departing for Macao made an emergency landing in waters at Hong Kong Victoria Harbor on Saturday. All of 13 people on board were safely rescued.At around 12:04 noon (GMT 4:04), the Sky Shuttle type AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter, flight no. EMU2, made an emergency landing at sea about 500 meters northwest of Shun Tak Center at Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island shortly after taking off."The pilot heard a loud bang at the back and decided to land on the waters," Acting Director General of the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) Leung Yu-keung said at a press briefing on Saturday that they will send some of the fittings broken down from the wreckage to Italy, where the copter was manufactured, for investigation. The crashed helicopter is salvaged on the sea area between the Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsular, south China, July 3, 2010. The helicopter crashed on Saturday noon, and all 13 persons onboard have been rescued.CAD will invite the participation of the accident investigation authorities of Macao and Italy. Leung said a preliminary report will be released within a month.
