SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two thieves prowled an entire neighborhood in Oak Park looking for something very specific on the vehicles.Along Blackton Drive, the sense of safety is shattered for David Cabrera.  Late Wednesday morning, Cabrera and his wife returned home to a neighbor telling them to check their license plate.  He discovered the registration sticker on his truck stolen. He had sliced his sticker into eight different sections as a precaution but it didn't help.Cabrera's surveillance cameras revealed the thieves:  a man and a woman walking together. A tree obscures the camera's view, but a woman can be seen behind Cabrera's truck, while the man stands and looks around.  The woman gets up and the two walk off.Seconds later, a neighbor saw the same woman peeling off a sticker from another car and the neighbor ran out of her kitchen to confront her.  That neighbor told the woman to put it back.  The woman got verbally aggressive but did put the sticker back.Neighbors called 911 but the thieves took off.  After Cabrera posted details on the Nextdoor app, five other neighbors reported also getting hit that morning."It's a feeling of violation. You want to feel safe in your own neighborhood," said Cabrera. 1275

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two puppies soon to be up for adoption in San Diego are already capturing hearts around the world.Two 3-month-old terrier-blends, named Star and Denver, were taken to Helen Woodward Animal Center on Feb. 11 after their mother had been dumped in a rural location in Louisiana. They were taken by van about 1,900 miles through a partnership with the rescue group Heart of Louisiana.Once in San Diego, it wasn't long before staff learned about Star's unique challenges and special bond with her brother. Star is blind and deaf and Denver had taken on the role of guide dog for his sister.RELATED: Assemblyman Todd Gloria announces bill to end puppy mills in California"While the rest of [Star's] littermates frolicked without her, her brother Denver kept a protective eye on her," the animal center wrote. "Choosing Star as his main playmate, the two were rarely apart and when separated, Denver would come running back to love on Star and let her know he was there."The pair's heartwarming story has made its way across the world, according to the animal center. Helen Woodward workers say they've fielded calls from New Zealand, Canada, and states across the U.S. inquiring about the duo.Lucky for San Diego, the animal center says the pair's next family must be local so that the center's trainer can help them begin their lives with a special needs puppy.RELATED: Pet stores at Westfield malls in Escondido and National City close amid legal pressure“It’s really extraordinary,” stated Helen Woodward Adoption Services Manager Dora Dahlke. “We never stop learning from animals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While many Americans may be divided on whether they will get a COVID-19 vaccine once one is available, National City’s mayor is about to be part of the trial process.“I’m excited, kind of nervous,” said National City Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis. “As a leader, I will step up, physically, mentally, and emotionally for my community because we need to be part of the solution.”After learning more about Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Phase 3 vaccine trial happening in National City, Sotelo-Solis said she decided the right move was to apply to become a trial participant herself.“I believe, as a leader, you should demonstrate trust in the system,” she said. “I was able to ask more detailed questions; I am a survivor of melanoma cancer, you know, getting all those questions answered. I will be an active participant in the vaccine trial starting Friday.”Johnson & Johnson is aiming to recruit 60,000 people worldwide to take part in its trial. UC San Diego is participating in the study locally and looking to enroll 2,000 volunteers.Trailers that act as a vaccine clinic have been set up at El Toyon Park in National City, and the trial resumed last week.Across the county, Hispanic and Latino communities have been hit the hardest by COVID-19. The Chicano Federation has been working as part of the San Diego Latino Health Coalition to address the issues and provide helpful information about vaccine trials.“One of the things we recognized early on is that our Spanish speaking community and Latino community here in San Diego needed more education about vaccine trials,” said Nancy Maldonado, President, and CEO of the Chicano Federation. “We want our community, particularly our Spanish speaking community, to have all the education they need around the vaccine and around vaccine trials.”Maldonado said the goal is to make sure Southbay residents have the information they need to make informed decisions, and she applauds Sotelo-Solis for her efforts.“One of the best ways to gain trust is to lead by example and not ask someone to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself,” said Maldonado.“If I can help someone trust in vaccine trials and medical systems as a whole, we can really start chipping away at building true and significant trust,” said Sotelo-Solis.Sotelo-Solis said she will have her blood drawn and get a shot as part of the trial on Friday morning.UCSD is still recruiting participants for this trial. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  Pacific Trails Middle School student Kevin Luo has been crowned the winner of the 2018 countywide spelling bee.The 8th grader won the bee at 12:30 p.m. after a grueling three and a half hours of spelling. This year's winning word was gradine, which is "a low step or ledge, especially one at the back of an altar."Last year's winner was also from Pacific Trails Middle School. Yash Hande advanced to the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. Although he spelled several words correctly, Yash didn't advance to the finals due to his score on the written test. Watch the entire bee in the player below:  680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wednesday a preliminary hearing began for a man accused of aiming a loaded gun at off-duty San Diego Police officers at a Mission Valley bar parking lot last November.A San Diego Superior Court Judge listened to testimony from officers in case involving the defendant Jonathan Felix. The incident happened outside of McGreggor’s Bar and Grill on Nov. 7, 2018.Wednesday, officer Jonathan Rodriquez was the first witness on the stand. Rodriguez said he had a few beers after work with coworkers that night. He said Felix was sitting about 20 feet away from the off-duty officers.Once the bar was closing they all walked out into the parking lot.RELATED: San Diego man says off-duty SDPD officers assaulted himRodriguez claims he saw Felix looking into his car or looking at his car. He said after that he and the other officers watched Felix go to his own car.“The defendant got a bicycle out of his car, I thought it was strange and he left,” said Rodrigues. “After he left he came back a second time.”Felix claims he lives nearby and uses the parking lot at that shopping center because parking is limited at his apartment complex. Rodriguez says an off-duty officer then walked over to Felix and had an “innocent conversation." He said Felix asked the officers if they’d like to smoke, but they all denied him. Rodriguez decided he did not feel comfortable being there, and says he left in his own vehicle.After that, surveillance video shows what transpired.Felix is seen having interactions with the other off-duty officers, and then he’s seen holding a gun.The officers began beating Felix, leaving him with a bloody head, several lacerations and bruises. He was arrested that night. Second on the stand was officer Andrew Duncan. He was one of the officers involved in the fight. He claims they walked out of the bar and saw Felix acting strange. Duncan says Felix left and came back saying the other officers threatened to beat him. Duncan went on to testify that's when Felix showed his gun. Then, Duncan said, all 4 officers pointed their gun at Felix then tackled him. They say they were wrestling with him to get the gun away. Tasha Williamson with Building Justice says Felix shouldn't be facing these charges, but that the officers should face assault charges because Felix wasn't doing anything wrong that night. Williamson says the officers were off-duty and should have left Felix alone.Felix is charged with two felony weapons charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He’s also charged with and a misdemeanor drug charge for being in possession of a controlled substance.Before the preliminary hearing started his lawyer, Alicia Freeze, spoke outside of the courtroom.“Uniquely and I think very creatively, my client is not being charged with brandishing a weapon, he’s not being charged with assault with a deadly weapon, he’s not being charged with a lot of the initial charges he was booked under,” she said.On Jan. 4 the San Diego Police Department issued the following statement: “The San Diego Police Department submitted a criminal case to the District Attorney's Office regarding this incident, in which Mr. Felix pulled a gun on four off-duty police officers. He has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possession of a controlled substance. Mr. Felix is entitled to the presumption of innocence and the full facts of this case will be litigated as the criminal case proceeds. As in any situation where there are allegations of misconduct, the San Diego Police Department has initiated an internal investigation. If found, any misconduct will be handled accordingly.”At the end of this preliminary hearing a judge will decide if there’s enough evidence for the case to move to trial. If the case goes to trial and Felix is found guilty and convicted, his lawyer says he could be looking at one to two years in prison.Several supporters of Felix showed up to court today and plan to have a press conference following the hearing. 4063
