If you've notice delays in the delivery of your packages or higher prices for some of things you order, a shortage of truck drivers may be to blame. A new program is hoping to bring some relief, but some worry it'll make roads less safe.The program trains teenagers to drive cross country. Elijah Amos is one of the teens involved with the program and working towards getting his commercial driver’s license.“I think we really did it for me is driving,” Amos says. “Because I really like driving and I feel like you get paid a decent amount of money. Just to drive.”But since he's 18, he won't be able to drive from state to state. He'll have to wait until he's 21. However, a new government pilot program will soon allow some drivers as young as 18 to drive cross country.“I feel like it would open up more job opportunities,” Amos says. “And maybe it opened up the eyes to some of the younger people maybe like actually try and do it.”The program would be available to some members of the National Guard and others with military experience. But in March, House Republicans introduced a bill to lower the commercial driving age to 18 for anyone driving state to state. Their goal? To fight a nation-wide truck driving shortage.Quincy Jones, who directs Sage Truck Driving School, says it's been challenging to attract driving students. He says ultimately, consumers pay the price.“Shipping costs get passed down the consumer,” Jones says. “So if there's a shortage, those aren't getting picked up as frequently. And so who pays them? We do. We all pay. Consumers do."The American Trucking Associations says the shortage is expected to hit 63,000 this year. But with motor vehicle drivers aged 16 to 19 being nearly three times more likely than people over 20 to fatally crash, not everyone believes teen drivers are the solution to the problem.“Younger people have less experience driving for all types of vehicles,” says Norita Taylor, with the Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association. “And so the crash rates are higher for younger people, and so we think it would be a dangerous idea.”Sponsors say the bill would require teens complete at least 240 hours driving supervised by a veteran driver.  2240

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CNS) - Two firefighters and two Oktoberfest celebrants remain hospitalized Sunday with injuries resulting from an electrical vault that exploded at the Old World Village's seasonal celebration in Huntington Beach, authorities said. Witnesses at the scene claimed there were actually three explosions. A witness using the Twitter handle kylen1972 posted video on the platform of what he claimed was the second explosion, in which flames can be seen shooting into the air. Restaurant patron Dawn Orlow-Townsend told KCAL9 the lights flickered before the explosions and that she could feel the heat through the walls. She said that after the initial blast, ``you could hear a pin drop.'' She then described a scene of panic as patrons struggled to get out of the building. ``I pray those firefighters are okay,'' she said. ``It was crazy, it was so intense. There was a second explosion and then a third. We just started running, we left our cellphones. We were freaking out. People were running all over. It was crazy.'' She added, ``It's the world we live in right now. After the first explosion, you just don't know what to think. We didn't know what was going on. The first one, the second one -- then there was mass pandemonium. By the third one, we just couldn't get out of there fast enough.'' KCAL9 also talked to Adam Carlson. ``Everyone was just happy and drinking beer and then the first explosion hit and people started backing away, and security tried to calm everyone,'' he said. ``I didn't see anyone get hurt in my immediate response, but while evacuating, we saw -- I personally saw two people that appeared hurt, one had burns. I just tried to comfort who I could.'' At 8:10 p.m., the Huntington Beach Fire Department received news of the explosion at 7561 Center Ave., a dispatcher said. The flames were out at 8:33 p.m., he said. The injured firefighters were already at Old World Village, investigating reports of a possible electrical fire, Huntington Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Lopez told reporters at the scene. They were met by the first explosion when they opened an electrical vault, he said. The second explosion happened within minutes. The injured firefighters and civilians were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Lopez said, but added that they were taking those injuries ``very seriously.'' If you can't beat Amazon, partner with it.Kohl's is doing another deal with Jeff Bezos. The department store chain said Tuesday that 82 stores in the Chicago and Los Angeles areas will soon accept return items from Amazon. Kohl's will pack and ship the merchandise back to the online retailing giant for free.Earlier this month, Kohl's announced a plan to sell the Alexa-enabled Echo home speaker, Fire TV, tablets and other Amazon-branded devices in 10 of its stores.The latest partnership between Kohl's and Amazon comes as traditional retailers try (and often fail) to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape. In a survey of 1,000 small business owners conducted by the US Chamber of Commerce, 57% ranked the economy as the first or second most important issue influencing their vote in the 2020 Election. With 30.2 million small businesses in the US, according to 2018 US figures, these voters make up a significant chunk of the electorate. “Small businesses provide so much to our economy,” Pete Mikulin, CEO of 3R Technology Solutions said. The company focuses on electronics recycling and data destruction.“We’re fortunate in that we’re OK. We’re just OK,” he said. The pandemic hit businesses hard like Mikulin's hard. “It wouldn’t take much right now to ruin, completely destroy the small business landscape.”Many are not sure what the future holds.“Your plans go out the window,” Mikulin said. “So you deal with it everyday, day by day, and it’s survival.”“It feels like we’re alone. It feels like there's no one in our corner as a small business owner,” he added.“There’s concern of the small businesses that not enough attention is being paid to them in Washington, that Washington is looking at some of the bigger items in the election and they’re forgetting about the fact that small businesses is the major driver of our economy,” Mac Clouse, business expert for over 40 years and professor at University of Denver, said.“The stock market is a general indicator of what's going on with stock prices, and stock prices are usually reflective of your larger firms, firms that are publicly traded,” he said. “That really doesn't measure what's happening with the mom and pop businesses, the small businesses. His business was impacted by shutdowns and restrictions.“Total, our revenue was cut 60% for what we normally would be,” he said. “I am not comfortable with what the next three to four months brings, so because of that, we've been putting more money than usual into savings.”Without the same safety net some of the larger companies have, small businesses are taking things day by day.“For them, what’s important is what’s going to happen in the next three to six months,” Clouse said.Many are waiting to see if they’ll see any help from the government. Surveys from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce show a majority of small business owners are more interested in the 2020 election compared to 2016.“We need our elected leaders to come together and provide targeted relief to the industries of small businesses that have been most deeply impacted, and that doesn't necessarily mean financial help although that's required as well,” Mikulin said. “All we’d like to do is keep our doors open and people employed.
