And while hope is quickly evaporating after losing a few key races, Dems may still have a path to controlling the upper chamber — through Georgia.That's because the Peach State is choosing not just one, but two new Senators in 2020. As election officials continue to count mail-in ballots, which tend to skew blue, Democrats hope votes for Ossoff and Libertarian candidate Shane Hazel drop Perdue's vote count under the 50% margin to force a runoff.In addition, Georgians this year were also tasked with selecting a replacement for third-term Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, who retired in 2019 due to health problems. Though businesswoman Kelly Loeffler was tapped by Gov. Brian Kemp to replace Isakson, Kemp announced that a special election would be held in 2020 so voters could select who finished Isakson's term.Because the special election had no primary vote, it was always expected to end in a runoff. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, currently has the most votes (about 33%) among all candidates — but likely because Loeffler and Rep. Doug Collins waged an expensive inter-Republican fight for the right to compete in a runoff. Loeffler (26%) tallied more votes than Collins (20%), meaning she'll face Warnock in a runoff election early next year.As of Thursday morning, both the Republican and Democrat caucus hold 48 Senate seats, with four races still to be called by the Associated Press. DENVER, Colorado — Authorities say one person is dead and four others have been wounded in a shooting in broad daylight in downtown Denver.It happened around 4 p.m. local time Monday near the busy intersection of 21st and Lawrence streets. A suspect or suspects remain at large. Police say the four wounded in the shooting were transported to Denver Health in stable condition. The fatal victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced at the scene. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - Renting or owning a home in Del Mar is way out of reach for most San Diego families. But unlike other coastal cities, Del Mar has zero affordable apartments. Instead, Del Mar subsidizes rent for six low-income families. On Monday, the county's smallest city could get on the way to offering affordable homes. The Del Mar City Council could move to take advantage of a new state law that streamlines permitting for accessory dwelling units, like a granny flat in the backyard or a separate apartment within a house. The city may ask families who build those units to commit to leasing them to low-income families for thirty years. In exchange, the homeowners would get an additional 500 square feet of space above current zoning when they want to add on to their properties. “There is nothing that brings me to life or makes me feel more at home than being near the coast, and I think it's a blessing and wonderful opportunity,” said Kari Arendsen, who was visiting Dog Beach.  The city is hoping to start the program with two homeowners, but ultimately aims to get 22 affordable homes on line. The affordable homes would be for families earning at least 80 percent of the median income, so a family of two earning about ,200 a year would qualify. DEER SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) — One person died in a fire that destroyed two trailers and a garage in the unincorporated Escondido area on Saturday.The fire was reported just after 2:30 p.m. in the 9800 block of Rocky Ridge Road at Sage Glen Trail in Deer Springs, according to CAL FIRE San Diego.San Diego Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene to find fire crews actively trying to douse the flames. The 71-year-old homeowner told deputies he just arrived home from fishing before hearing a loud explosion as he was left the garage.The explosion caused a fire that spread throughout the garage and to some adjacent trailers, deputies say. The blaze destroyed two residential trailers and the detached garage.All residents were account for except man, who was later found dead inside one of the trailers, according to the Sheriff's Department. The victim's identity was not immediately released.Sheriff's Bomb and Arson detectives were working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. 998

(KGTV) - North San Diego County kids and teens had a challenging day on the beach Friday during the junior lifeguard competition in Del Mar.The Del Mar Junior Lifeguards hosted their counterparts from Solana Beach for a day of running, paddle and swim relays, and beach flag games."I definitely feel I grew as a person, I learned to be more selfless. We learned to kind of share respect to others no matter what, and I mean my teamwork just definitely got a lot better,” said 14-year-old James Goodwin, junior lifeguard of the year.Five hundred children ages 9 through 7 participated in the events."We are stressing sportsmanship and teamwork; we're stressing participation, having fun, trying your best.
