BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's urban fixed asset investment rose 24.9 percent in the first 11 months year on year to hit 21.07 trillion yuan (3.19 trillion U.S. dollars), China's statistics authority said Saturday.The growth rate was 0.5 percentage points higher than that during the first ten months, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The urban investment in the primary, secondary and tertiary industries rose by 16.6 percent, 22.7 percent and 26.9 percent respectively.During the first 11 months, investment in central government projects rose 10.2 percent year on year to 1.68 trillion yuan, while investment in local government projects was up 26.4 percent to reach 19.39 trillion yuan, according to the NBS figures.Property development investment was up 36.5 percent year on year to reach 4.27 trillion yuan, the figures showed.During the same period, state-owned and state-controlled investment reached 8.75 trillion yuan, up 19 percent from a year earlier.Investment in railway constructions and transportation jumped 25.3 percent to 582.2 billion yuan, while investment in petroleum and gas exploration climbed 5.8 percent to 219.4 billion yuan for the first 11 months.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. ZHENGZHOU, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Seven company executives were suspended from duty or removed Monday after 26 miners were killed in a gas explosion in an illegally operated coal mine on Dec. 7 in central China's Henan Province, according to the group's spokesman.Forty-six miners were working underground when the blast occurred at the Juyuan Coal Mine, owned by Juyuan Coal Industry Co., Ltd. in Mianchi County, Sanmenxia City. The company is being merged into Yi Ma Coal Industry Group.Deputy general manager, Li Jianxin, of Yi Ma Coal Industry Group, the mine's prospective parent company, was suspended from duty pending investigation. Li was in charge of the group's merger and regrouping, said the group's spokesman.Manager Yao Nianshou and four deputy managers who were sent by the group to Juyuan Coal Industry Co., Ltd. were also removed, he said.The spokesman said the decisions to discipline the executives have been approved by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Henan Province. The final punishment for those responsible for the incident will be decided based on the findings of the on-going investigation.Managers of the Juyuan Coal Mine did not obtain a license to excavate coal from the site in Mianchi County, where the explosion occurred. Mine managers also ignored an order to halt production, as the mine's operations are being reorganized as part of the merger.The mine had been known as the Suzhuang Coal Mine and was later re-launched as Juyuan when it was merged into the large state-owned conglomerate Yi Ma Coal Industry Group.Police said they arrested the owner of the mine, Suo Yonggang, who allegedly hid the bodies of the victims to lessen the casualty count. Suo fled the mine following the blast.Mine managers first reported that only 20 miners were trapped when the blast occurred. Provincial work safety authorities updated the figure to 33 and then to 46 as investigators found more bodies in the mine. Only 20 miners survived.

NANJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- About 5,000 Chinese and foreigners gathered Monday in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, to mourn hundreds of thousands of people who were killed by invading Japanese troops 73 years ago.Participants in the ceremony stood in silent tribute, offered wreaths and bowed in front of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre, with sirens wailing in the drizzling morning on Monday, the 73rd anniversary of the massive slaughter."The Japanese soldiers invaded Nanjing when I was four, and they killed some of my family members. On the anniversary of the massacre every year I would come here to express my grief," said Sun Xuelan, a 77-year-old survivor, who is confined to a wheelchair.Japanese troops occupied Nanjing on Dec. 13, 1937 and began a six-week massacre. Records show more than 300,000 people -- not only disarmed soldiers , but also civilians -- were killed.Mikhalchev Mikhail, deputy director of the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Russia, said, "In the history of human civilization, some facts shouldn't be forgotten, and the Nanjing Massacre was one of them."He noted that the tragedy had become a symbol of the Chinese people's bitter suffering and prompted all people to learn the preciousness of peace.""We should remember the history, but not hatred.
