Commercial airlines are rerouting flights throughout the Middle East to avoid potential danger during heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.Jumbled schedules could affect as many as 15,000 passengers per day, lengthen flight times by an average of 30 to 90 minutes, and severely bruise the bottom line for airlines, industry analysts said. There is anxiety that the conflict between the longtime foes could intensify following Iranian ballistic missile strikes Wednesday on two Iraqi bases that house U.S. troops. The attacks were retaliation for the U.S. killing of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike near Baghdad last week.“In a war situation, the first casualty is always air transport,” said Dubai-based aviation consult Mark Martin, pointing to airline bankruptcies during the Persian Gulf and Yugoslav wars.At least 500 commercial flights travel through Iranian and Iraqi airspace daily, Martin said.A Ukrainian passenger jet crashed shortly after taking off from Iran’s capital Wednesday killing 167 passengers and nine crew members just hours after 1118
Ever see a car or truck go by with a Red Bull logo on it, maybe Coca-Cola or Dr Pepper? They show up at festivals and concerts all summer long.So imagine getting paid every month just for having an ad like that on your car.Susan Miller's 17-year-old niece thought it would be a great first job."She was looking for work, was freshly graduated, and she went to some online job hunting sites," Miller said. The recent high school grad entered her information.Beverage company offers ad gigSo when she received a text from Dr Pepper Snapple Group offering to pay her to wrap her car with ads, the young woman was obviously interested.A few days later she received a large packet in the mail."To my surprise she got a check from PNC bank for ,500," Miller said. The instructions told her to deposit the check, then wire half of it to the car wrapping agent, and keep the rest for herself. Then her car would be wrapped with Dr Pepper advertising. It sounded like easy money: anywhere from 0 to 0 a month just to put a sticker on your car advertising a soft drink. But Miller immediately felt the whole thing was suspicious. Thank goodness, she says, that she opened the envelope before her niece did."If she had opened this, she probably would have been at the bank and cashed it," Miller said. And it would have bounced. Many companies targeted by this scamDr Pepper Snapple Group has issued an alert that this job offer is a scam. They are not paying people to put ads on their car (see full statement below).Red Bull, Rockstar Energy Drink, Casio watches and Nike are likewise not paying people to put their logo on their car. But people are falling for it because the job offer sounds plausible (we have all seen marketing cars), and the checks appear perfectly legitimate."This check does look real," Miller said. "It's from PNC bank. And from what I understand, if you deposit it and spend your money you're responsible to pay it back." The check is not a real PNC check, but rather is a sophisticated forgery. That would have been a tough life lesson for a young woman just out of high school.Bottom line: No beverage company will pay someone who is not a company employee to drive a car with their logos on it. If you have an accident or are caught speeding they could be liable. So avoid these offers, so you don't waste your money._______________________FULL STATEMENT FROM DR PEPPER SNAPPLE GROUP:"We do not have a program offering to wrap cars in advertising graphics for any of our brands. Anyone sending these offers does not represent Dr Pepper Snapple Group or any of our brands and is most likely attempting a scam."___________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. Dollar Tree/Family Dollar and Dollar General will pay the State of New York .2 million as part of a settlement for selling expired drugs and obsolete motor oil, the N.Y. Attorney General announced on Monday. The Attorney General's Office said that investigators found over-the-counter drugs that were months beyond their expiration dates at Family Dollar, Dollar General and Dollar Tree locations as well as a number of motor oils that are not suitable for vehicles for engines made after 1988 at Dollar General. Investigators even found at multiple Dollar General locations a type of motor oil, DG SAE-30, which is not suitable for engines built after 1930. “It’s a tough pill for New Yorkers to swallow that the over-the-counter drugs they were buying may have been expired,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James. “New York consumers have a right to expect that products on store shelves are safe, fresh and suitable for their advertised use. "These settlements will ensure that Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar will not only pay both a substantial fine and damages, but, more importantly, update their business practices to comply with the law so that no expired over-the-counter drugs are sold to a New York consumer again.”Dollar Tree and Family Dollar merged in 2015, but run separate operations.Dollar Tree/Family Dollar will pay a .1 million fine, and Dollar General will pay 0,000.The stores also agreed to do the following in New York:Maintaining and utilizing a system for electronically recording and tracking the expiration dates on merchandise delivered to their distribution centers,Maintaining and enforcing policies and procedures that require employees to rotate stock when restocking store shelves, as well as conducting weekly inspections of store shelves to remove any expired products,Conducting monthly audits of each retail store to check for expired products, andInstituting third-party audits of 10% of the chains’ New York stores for a period of at least oneyear to check for expired over-the-counter drugs. 2074
CHICAGO, Ill. – There’s a new addition to the nation’s second largest prosecutor’s office and she happens to stand on four legs. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office swore in its newest member this week, a “facility dog” name Hatty. While Hatty may not boast a law degree like others in the Chicago-based office, the black Labrador Retriever comes with her own set of skills. The pup will work with the office’s Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Unit to comfort child sexual assault victims as they navigate the criminal justice system. Hatty was trained by inmates at a men’s prison in southwestern Illinois, 630
