SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -     If that useful device isn't working, a local program will try to fix your broken item for free so you don't have to replace it. For Gary Warth, the sounds from his computer never sounded so nice."It's good to have audio," said Warth.A few months ago, his 0 computer speakers fell silent. The culprit was the end piece that plugs into the computer. Getting it repaired could have cost him between and 0, so Warth tried to fix it himself - and failed.In early September, Warth saw a notice for a fixit clinic at a Goodwill store in Serra Mesa, organized by the nonprofit Zero Waste San Diego. For the last four years, the group has been offering free, monthly clinics to help fix the broken: from blenders and barbecues, to lamps and fans.Fixit volunteer Michael Gleason joined the group after he retired. "When we fix someone's lamp and it lights up and the owner's face lights up.  That's the reward for me," said Gleason.He says his success rate is about 50%. 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A City Heights native is returning to San Diego as part of the Broadway tour of Miss Saigon.Jackie Nguyen is a member of the ensemble, but says this show has always had a special place in her heart."It was the very first musical that I saw, ever," says Nguyen.Getting the chance to perform in her home town is a thrill for Nguyen, who says about 20 family members and friends will be at each show throughout the weekend."I've always wanted to play the Civic Theater because this is where I first saw my big Broadway musicals in high school," she says. "It's a full circle moment for me."The show also has significance for her family, as Nguyen's mother is from Vietnam and has a similar story to the main character, Kim."When you are introduced to Kim at the beginning of the show, she's 17 and she meets and American GI. My mom, in the midst of the war, when she was 17, she also met an American GI. And they got married and had children from that. And eventually went to America," says Nguyen.That connection makes performing in Miss Saigon even more meaningful every time Nguyen steps on stage."Every night, i know that I am trying to give my family and my mom some type of honor in some way," she says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Coronado gym is taking on a novel concept, devising a bracket-style challenge involving acts of kindness.Founder Nick Merrill grew up on Whidbey Island, north of Seattle, Washington and giving is in his blood. Merrill said his dad was a founder of Hearts and Hammers, a non-profit that helps build homes for those in need.After college he met his wife, who shared his love of fitness. "I met my wife through working out, we started running marathons together and ended up doing some charity runs where we ran across Washington State where we earned a bunch of money for some charities in Africa, built a school, built some wells," Merrill said.Naturally when they opened the doors of Sweat Equity in Bellevue six years ago, they wanted to marry their gym with good deeds. They opened their Coronado gym about two years ago.Every year they have challenges to engage their members. Each March, they play off of the NCAA's March Madness bracket competition.Each team of four earns points through workouts and "each round will have a specific random act of kindness that everyone will do," Merrill said that will earn them points as well.In years past, it's been anything from buying a cup of coffee for someone, to putting change in an expired parking meter. One year they flexed their giving muscles pretty hard, "we brought in over 2,000 lbs of food basically in one day." Merrill said that was for Northwest Harvest in Washington.This year they hope is their biggest year yet."It's so rewarding, it makes you feel so good and it makes the person you helped out feel so good," Merrill said.The competition starts March 16 and ends April 1, with the winner receiving a trophy for their efforts. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A frustrating mystery is plaguing commuters in Carmel Valley.A seemingly perfectly good brand new lane meant to ease traffic to the 56 has been coned off for months. The project adds a third lane on southbound Camino del Sur from around Highland Village place to Highway 56. Greg Agius, who commutes that way, says it's been coned off for months. A city staffer told him it would be complete by the end of August, but on Monday it was still inaccessible to drivers. RELATED: San Diego road repairs are ahead of scheduleAgius, who also bikes in the area, said it is making for a tight merge that has led to near fender benders. "It's backing up my commute," he said. "I've actually over the last three to four months had maybe half a dozen close calls."The lane is meant to lighten the congestion in Carmel Valley, which is getting increasingly congested as more housing is built. Developer Lennar hired contractor MGI to add the lane as part of its approval for area housing projects. RELATED: San Diego projects receive funding due to controversial gas tax"This is the one that baffles me the most because it's more dangerous what they've done with the cones than if the cones weren't here," Agius said. The problem rests with the traffic light at the intersection. It doesn't stretch far enough over to be visible to all cars in the new lane. Caltrans Spokesman Ed Cartagena gave an example of cars next to a semi-truck.They wouldn't be able to see the traffic light if not in front of them. Cartagena said it needs to be extended before anyone can benefit from the new asphalt. He also noted recent other work on the lane, above and below ground, including removal of an electric box ten inches above ground.  Either way, Cartagena said the new light should be installed by the end of the week, clearing the way for the lane to open. A city spokesman said the contractor had delays in obtaining the signal pole and mast-arm for the traffic light. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A fire destroyed an abandoned building in Barrio Logan early Wednesday morning, but no injuries were reported.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, crews were called to the structure fire in the 3500 block of Dalbergia Street at around 2:50 a.m.By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had already consumed much of the building. It took at least an hour to stop the fire from spreading.A deputy fire chief at the scene told 10News that crews have battled fires at this same address multiple times in the past.10News learned a fire occurred at the same location on April 14, and before that on Dec. 26, 2019.Additionally, on Oct. 25, 2019, a fire erupted inside of the same building; a trash can fire was reported on the property six days earlier.The cause of Wednesday’s fire is under investigation, and there is no immediate word on whether the fire is somehow connected to any of the previous incidents. No injuries were reported in any of those incidents.No one was inside at the time of Wednesday's fire. 1053
