SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Saturday marks the end to the San Diego Zoo's longest closure in its 103-year history. For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic forced a shutdown in mid-March, the zoo is back open. Visitors were happy to return to one of our city's jewels, even with some changes.For the last three months, visitors have been anxious to come to the grand reopening on Saturday."The turtles are kind of big and funny," laughed little Kitara. "They're very informative, and have all sorts of information for everybody on where to go and what to do, so I think they're doing an amazing job."The most significant change guests may see is at the primates exhibit."It can affect some of our animals," Sofia Springer, the zoo's Operations Manager said.Scientists say primates have been known to catch some human respiratory illnesses. Their immunity to COVID-19 is not certain. But the zoo isn't taking any chances."We've provided barriers and one-way pathways to keep the guests from getting too close to those areas."But there are many other exhibits where you can get up close to the animals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Assembly Bill 5 (AB 5) may pose a new threat in plans for at-home learning this fall.AB 5 was created to help turn some gig workers, or freelancers turn into employees with benefits.The bill has been met with controversy as it has impacted thousands of freelance workers across California, and now it could change how tutors can be hired.“Many parents are scrambling right now to find out how do they help their children keep pace,” said Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California.DeMaio held a press conference in Escondido with a group of parents, teachers, and education advocates by his side, calling for California Gov. Gavin Newsom to suspend AB 5.“This is absurd that the governor is allowing an environment where parents have to run the risk for violating AB 5, a state law, facing penalties and fines for doing so, just because they’re trying to help their children learn,” he said.DeMaio said parents who want a tutor for their child during this challenging time might be required to hire them as employees, not independent contractors.He has created an online petition and urges people to sign it before it’s sent to the governor.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez authored AB 5 and sent the following statement to ABC 10News in response to DeMaio’s press conference. 1299

SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - New recommendations aim to help the thousands of teenagers living with depression who are suffering in silence. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for primary care doctors to screen young people. They say 2 out of 3 depressed teens are not being identified by their doctors and not getting the care they need. One survey doctors can give to patients is just two questions, another is nine. The purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis but rather screen for depression in a "first step" approach. San Diego Pediatrician Jaime Friedman believes it's a positive step to help young people and that it will be fairly easy to incorporate into visits. She will soon be using tablets on which parents and teens can answer questions related to their visit, they'll also be able to conduct the depression screening on them. Doctors are also being advised to talk to families about safety plans, removing lethal medications or guns from the home to prevent suicide. The AAP recommends young people get screened at least once a year starting at age 12.  1144

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family of Crystal Odom filled a San Diego courtroom Monday morning to hear a judge sentence the man convicted of killing Odom in a drive-by shooting in 1995. The judge sentenced Aswad Walker to 15 years to life for Odom's murder, plus three years for gang ties. He was convicted of second-degree murder back in February for Odom's death. Two previous trials had ended in hung juries. Odom's parents spoke before the sentencing. Her mother called Walker a coward and told him he would get what he deserved in prison. When Odom's father, James Odom, spoke, the family became very emotional, tears and sobs could be heard throughout the courtroom. Odom said a burden was lifted off his shoulders and that the sentencing marked an end to a long ordeal. At the time of the shooting, Crystal was with her then boyfriend and her 10-month-old daughter. Her daughter and boyfriend were unhurt. 959
