There were 31 confirmed cases of hepatitis A last month, compared to a peak of 94 cases in August.There have been 544 cases as of Monday in the nearly year-old outbreak, an increase of 28 cases since data was last released on Oct. 24, according to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.She said some of those 28 cases include ones from as long ago as April that were newly confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Due to the disease's long incubation period, there could potentially be more confirmed cases from October. The county did not disclose the age or gender of the four new cases confirmed this week, but said all of the patients visited the fair's animal exhibits and petting zoos.People can avoid contracting the bacteria by thoroughly washing their hands after making contact with animals at places like farms, petting zoos and fair exhibits. Young children, older adults and people with weak immune systems are at particular risk, according to health officials.The HHSA and the California Department of Food and Agriculture collected environmental samples at the fair after the first cases were reported to confirm the bacteria's origin. However, results of the collected samples were not available prior to the fair's closure and have yet to be disclosed.County health officials repeatedly cautioned that more confirmed cases were likely despite the fair's closing due to local doctors intentionally looking for symptoms of the bacteria and its multi-day incubation period. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The proposed .8 billion budget that San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer unveiled today includes the most infrastructure spending in city history, and prioritizes public safety, street repair and recreation centers, as well as initiatives to fight homelessness and illegal dumping.The spending blueprint also closes a million deficit without significant cuts to major programs, according to the mayor."We're continuing to put neighborhoods first by maintaining the key services we've restored in recent years," Faulconer said. "This balancedbudget will keep our foot on the pedal when it comes to fixing more roads, helping people into stable housing, keeping libraries and rec centers open for children, creating more housing affordability for working families and putting more police officers on the street to protect our communities."The budget proposal includes the largest recruitment and retention package in San Diego Police Department history, the equivalent of 390 miles of street repair and the highest level of library and rec center operating hours in a decade, according to the mayor's office.It also reserves 3 million for initiatives related to the Climate Action Plan, including 1 million to advance the Pure Water San Diego water recycling program.
