SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State health officials are working to catch up on a large backlog of COVID-19 tests.According to Marik Ghaly, California'sCalifornia's Health and Human Services Secretary, a server outage on July 25 led to a delay in lab records coming into the reporting system.Ghaly says they also realized they weren't getting data from one of their largest commercial labs for five days, between July 31 and August 4, because the state neglected to renew a certification."We apologize. You deserve better. The Governor demands better of us,"" Ghaly said during a Friday virtual news conference.Ghaly says there are an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 tests that need to be processed, and that will happen in the next 24 to 48 hours.The system accepts results for other reportable diseases, so the records have to sorted, Ghaly said, though adding that a majority will be COVID-19 test samples."We expect that over the next 24 to 48 hours that the backlog that's between 250 to 300 thousand cases will be resolved giving us a better sense of the number of tests that were delayed," Ghaly said. "We are reporting this data to the counties based on the date the specimen was collected so we can attribute it to the appropriate date."Ghaly points out the state froze the county monitoring list last week, so the problem should have affected any decision-making policies. He also says it doesn't change any state trends with case rates, which he says are still trending downwards slightly.However, it's unclear how the delay in reporting will impact contact tracing.The Governor has ordered an investigation into the error. 1629

The data means many more Californians will be faced with helping their parents at the same time they’re trying to stash money away for retirement. 10News spoke with experts to take a look at ways to manage. As the population ages, more and more San Diegans will fall into the sandwich generation. Amrine understands. For a decade, she financially supported her mother’s care, which totaled half a million dollars. She says the bulk of the burden falls on families. “Mostly you'll be paying out of your own pocket. Nursing home fees are expected to reach more than 3,000 per year for a private room by 2035. Both Amrine and Linda Urbina with Golden Care have advice for the sandwich generation: Even if you’re simultaneously helping mom and dad, stay focused on a savings plan and look into your own long-term care options. “Be proactive, talk to a financial planner, the older you get the more they will cost you. So we're hoping that pace program will keep people at home.”And there are VA benefits for both veterans and their spouses. The combined benefit can total ,100 per month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police Saturday honored a local boy who risked his life to save his younger brother from drowning.Police say 10-year-old Ulises Frausto and his 7-year-old brother did not know how to swim when they were in a pool together. The brothers were holding onto the side of the pool when Frausto's brother lost his grip and sunk to the bottom.Despite not knowing how to swim, police say Frausto put his life on the line, swimming to the bottom of the pool to rescue his little brother. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Chicano Park is already a local icon. But soon, the mural-clad location could be listed within the National Park System.The Chicano Park Preservation Act (H.R. 486), introduced in January by Rep. Juan Vargas of the 51st Congressional District, would require the Department of the Interior to conduct a special resource study of Chicano Park and its murals and evaluate the site's national significance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released details Friday about the controversial arrest of a man and woman in Chicano Park involving use of force. Georgina Mercado, 35, interfered with a traffic stop being conducted Thursday, police said. Her three children, ages eight, seven, and four, were with her at the time. 22-year-old Eddie Alvarez arrived on scene with another woman who said they would take custody of the three children, according to SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi. Alvarez wore a bandana over his face and refused to identify himself, police said. Officers “could not release the children to the custody of Alvarez without knowing who he was,” said police. “This contact escalated to the point that officers arrested Alvarez for interfering,” Takeuchi wrote in a news release. Police said Alvarez refused to put his hands behind his back and struggled with officers. “Officers used strikes while they forcefully moved his arms behind his back,” police said. Alvarez was handcuffed and taken to jail. “Anytime force is used, we take it extremely seriously. We have initiated an internal investigation into the force that was used last night,” Takeuchi said. Hours after the arrest, dozens of people gathered outside the San Diego Central Jail downtown to demand Alvarez’ release. The group said Alvarez had been recording the arrest of Mercado, who they described as a community activist. One demonstrator said, “While he (Alvarez) was filming police, they came out and told him to stop recording. He said, ‘No, I don’t feel safe, I’m going to keep recording, especially with my girlfriend right here with the kids,’ and they didn’t like that … The cops ended up jumping him and rushed him to the ground and started punching him in the ribs. He wasn’t resisting whatsoever.” Alvarez is a member of the activist group Brown Berets of Aztlan, City News Service reported. He was booked on suspicion of felony obstructing or resisting an officer, and a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer. He was being held on ,000 bail.
