URUMQI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were racing to evacuate more than 800 people still trapped by rain-triggered mountain torrents in a remote valley in China's far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region late Friday afternoon.Rescuers managed to reach the site in Kuqa County, of Aksu Prefecture, at 1:26 a.m. Friday, about 24 hours after rains and floods stranded more than 1,000 residents, construction workers and tourists in the mountainous area.As of 5 p.m. Friday, more than 170 trapped people, including 120 tourists and some 50 railway construction workers, had been taken to safe places. BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's exports surged by 48.5 percent year on year in May, while the imports climbed 48.3 percent, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) announced Thursday.The growth rate for exports was 18.1 percentage points up from the figure for April, and the import growth rate dipped slightly from 49.7 percent reported in April.Exports totalled 131.76 billion U.S. dollars in May, said a statement on the GAS website, adding imports topped 112.23 billion U.S. dollars.Total foreign trade value rose 48.4 percent from a year earlier to 243.99 billion U.S. dollars in May. BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The State Council's policies to rein in rapidly soaring housing prices in cities will continue and local governments should implement them "unswervingly", according to a statement released Monday from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, while also denying some media reports on a possible policy withdrawal."We will urge local governments to make sure that they strictly implement the differentiated housing loans policy to crack down on housing speculations," the ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website.The ministry added it would adopt "positive" measures to increase the supply of commercial homes in the market, speed up construction of housing for low-income residents and renovation of shantytowns, and strengthen supervision of the real estate market conditions.The statement came shortly after the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released its latest figures on housing prices in Chinese cities.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 11.4 percent year on year in June, one percentage point lower than the increase in May, according to NBS statistics.This was the second consecutive month that China's property prices grew at a slower pace. Property prices in the 70 large- and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent year on year in May, 0.4 percentage point lower than in April.The State Council, China's Cabinet, introduced a series of tightening measures in April to rein in soaring house prices and curb speculation, including tightened scrutiny of developers' financing, suspension of loans for third-home purchases and higher down-payment requirements for second-home purchases.Housing prices almost doubled in some popular Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai in 2009, prompting the Chinese government to take measures to curb these excessive hikes.

CHENGDU, July 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 23 people have been killed and 30 are still missing as of Sunday evening after the worst rainstorm of the year lashed southwest China's Sichuan Province late Friday, the provincial civil affairs department said.More than 586,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes as torrential rains pounded 62 counties and cities in the province and triggered mountain torrents, landslides and house collapses, cutting off roads, electricity and communications in some regions.Half of the worst-hit Quxian County remains flooded, with water levels of up to 10 meters deep. The county is cut off from the outside world, with roads and railways flooded by waters, according to a spokesman with the department."We can only see the roofs of most riverside houses in Qujiang Town and Jubei Town," said Deng Yuhua, secretary of the county's Party committee.Further, rains are still pelting eastern parts of the province, which will probably aggravate the situation, said the spokesman.Flooding is forecasted to peak in Guang'an City, at the lower reaches of Qujiang River, on Monday.The provincial government has dispatched work teams and allocated emergency funds of 5 million yuan (about 730,000 U.S. dollars) to support flood relief operations.Parts of China experience heavy rains every summer, but this year's rains have been particularly devastating.Since the beginning of July, torrential rains and severe flooding has left 146 people dead and 40 missing and forced the evacuation of more than 1.3 million people as of 4 p.m. Friday in 10 provinces, mostly along the Yangtze River, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
