ZHIJIANG, Hunan, Sept. 7 (Xinhua)-- Former U.S. President James Carter attended the fourth China Zhijiang International Peace and Culture Festival in central China's Hunan Province Tuesday, commemorating the victory of the war against Japanese aggression and of the world anti-fascist war 65 years ago.The two-day festival was held in Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County where Japanese aggressors surrendered.Zhijiang is the most suitable place to celebrate the hard-earned peace. And the event sent an important message of peace and cultural exchanges, said Carter. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter addresses the opening ceremony of the 4th China Zhijiang International Peace Culture Festival in Zhijiang County, central China's Hunan Province, Sept. 7, 2010. More than 300 guests from all over the world were invited to the festival, one of the celebration activity for the 65th anniversary of the Japanese surrendering to China and the end of the worldwide Anti-Fascism War. Zhijiang County was the place where Japanese invaders surrendered to China in August, 1945.A statue of U.S. General Claire Lee Chenault, who established the U.S. "Flying Tigers" air squadron that fought in the Second World War, was also unveiled in Zhijiang on Tuesday.The American Volunteer Group, nicknamed the Flying Tigers by the Chinese for their courage, was formed in 1941 under the leadership of U.S. General Chenault to help China drive out invading Japanese troops.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday met with nearly 60 foreign political leaders and scholars on the eve of a forum to discuss global trends and common challenges.The forum will take place in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday and is organized by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC),the country's top advisory body.The forum's theme for its fourth conference is "new era, new challenges, new vision -- building a future for all.""It is significant for the 21st Century Forum to hold a conference on the global situation, challenges and visions," Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said.More than 100 officials, scholars and business executives from home and abroad will attend the two-day conference of the 21st Century Forum.As the world has been undergoing deep changes, transformation and adjustment, it is imperative for all countries to be interdependent, reform the international financial system and build a justifiable and reasonable world order, Jia told the foreign attendees to the forum.Among the foreign attendees are some well-known dignitaries, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former European Commission President Romano Prodi, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, former Russian Prime Minister Evgeni Primakov, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.Jia briefed foreign leaders on China's economic and social development, stressing China remained the world's biggest developing country despite its economic boom."It will take China decades of unremitting efforts to accomplish modernization," Jia said, adding China would adhere to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.Jia said China would continue to pursue peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all countries in accordance with its independent foreign policy.Jia reaffirmed China's efforts to play its due part in dealing with global challenges and contributing to world peace and development.Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo called for all countries to pursue a path of cooperation and common prosperity.After the meeting, Jia also hosted a welcome banquet for forum attendees.The 21st Century Forum convened its first conference in 1996. The purpose of the forum is to serve as a platform for leaders, scholars and experts from China and other countries to explore global trends and crucial issues of common interest to mankind in the 21st century.

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fanapi is likely to land on the east coast of Taiwan on Sunday, said China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center (NMEFC) in Beijing Friday.The center of the year' s 11th typhoon was about 700 km southeast from Hualien, in Taiwan, said a statement from the center.It was moving northwest towards Hualien and increasing in strength, the statement noted.The administration has issued a warning regarding huge waves which might strike off the Hualien coast, it said.On Sunday, the southern East China Sea might also produce waves of 4 to 6 meters high and waves in the Taiwan Strait might rise to 3 to 4 meters.Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces along the mainland's southeast coast would also be affected by the typhoon, the statement said.The statement warned all fishing boats in the region to take necessary precautions.The fishing season began in the East China Sea in mid-September and a large number of vessels are in the area.Additionally, Typhoon Fanapi could continue moving west after landing on Taiwan and strike Fujian and Guangdong, the statement said.Also on Friday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs launched an early-warning for disaster relief responses aimed at the typhoon's possible damages to the southeastern coastal areas.The ministry and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction instructed local governments to carefully keep track of the typhoon's movement and the changes in weather, and strengthen prevention measures for geological disasters and flooding in urban areas.Local governments were also urged to evacuate residents in high-risk areas while providing for their basic living necessities.

  

BEIJING/FUZHOU, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- A plane chartered by the Chinese government flew 14 Chinese fishermen illegally seized by Japanese authorities from Japan to the southeast China port city of Fuzhou Monday afternoon, after China's repeated solemn representations.The fishermen were detained after the trawler they were aboard collided with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea last Tuesday. No injuries were reported from the collision.Dressed in t-shirts and casual pants, the fishermen disembarked the plane and hugged their family members who had gathered at Changle International Airport in the coastal province of Fujian.Li Guojin (L Front) and other Chinese fishermen step down from the plane at the airport in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province, Sept. 13, 2010. A chartered plane of the Chinese government carrying 14 Chinese fishermen illegally seized by the Japanese authorities arrived in Fuzhou on Monday afternoon. The fishermen were illegally detained after a trawler they were aboard collided with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands last Tuesday."Our safe return is due to the work of Chinese society, including the Party, the government and compatriots from all walks of life," said Wang Guohua, one of the crew members.He said the Diaoyu Islands are Chinese territory and their detention by the Japanese authorities was illegal."For generations, we have fished in those waters and so how could they seize us?" he said.The trawler, which was "illegally detained by the Japanese side," also set off for home Monday morning, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that the Chinese government has dispatched a fisheries administration ship to the relevant waters to assist it.

  

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the opening ceremony of the third Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, to be held in Macao later this month.Wen will attend the function and inspect the Macao Special Administrative Region during a visit slated from Nov. 13 to 14, said a statement from his office Sunday.
