INDIANAPOLIS — Multiple people were treated for injuries after being stabbed near public library in downtown Indianapolis.Police were called to the scene on East St. Clair Street around 4:30 p.m. local time Saturday.According to Indianapolis Fire Department PIO Rita Reith, the attack started in the American Legion Mall and spilled over across the street into the entrance way of the public library. Four people were taken to the hospital to be treated for stab wounds - including the suspect. Reith says two of the victims are in critical conditions. The other two suffered serious injuries. None of them are believed to be life-threatening injuries. Witnesses say the person responsible for the stabbing rode into the park on his bike and was playing loud noises on a megaphone. When people asked him to turn it off and stop he pulled out a knife and started stabbing. Reith said the suspected will remain in police custody while he is treated at the hospital. No identities have been released. The incident remains under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. 1128

INDIANAPOLIS — A man who had to be rescued from a retention pond on Indianapolis' northeast side Monday after he jumped in to rescue his dog has died. The incident happened in The Masters apartment complex at about 11:30 a.m., near Masters Road and E. 91st Street.The Indianapolis Fire Department says the man went after one of his dogs when the pup went into the icy water.The victim, a man in his 20s, was not able to get out of the water.Two residents of the complex saw the man trying to rescue his dog and tried to help. Both fell into the water but were able to get out and were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. The victim was pulled from the water by a rescue team and rushed to St. Vincent Hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released. The victim's dog is expected to be OK.  859

It started out as a way to help her brother, and now, it's become so much more than that. Now one sister's efforts have made an impact far more than she could ever imagine.In their household, twins Sarah and Jacob Greichen are both included and involved. But one day after school a few years ago, Greichen realized outside the walls of their home, it was a different story."My brother got in and he was crying," Greichen said. "And he was saying, 'Mom I have no friends why don't I have any friends.'"Jacob has autism, and exclusion took its toll."He actually stopped talking completely," Greichen recalled. "He regressed, he went from probably a fourth, fifth, sixth-grade level to first-grade level and it was a really hard time for my family."Greichen decided to do something. And at 13 years old, she founded the non-profit Score A Friend, which builds clubs for students with and without intellectual disabilities in schools and communities."Every single kid meets friends through school or though activities and sports," Greichen said. "And Score A Friend is creating those opportunities for everyone. So that they can meet friends and then those friendships can go from school to home."Clubs can be focused on sports or electives, and one club even got the whole school involved with score a friend week."They talk about inclusion," Greichen said. "What unified sports are what person first language is what do you say when you walk up to a person with a disability and what is the right way to act."Now, Score A Friend has gone national, spreading to more than a dozen schools across the country, including at least two colleges."I mean now we have commercials and billboards out which is crazy!" Greichen exclaimed. "I mean, I never would have guessed this from the beginning."But for Greichen, her brother is the true measure of success."Jacob finally started talking again," Greichen said. "He started playing sports again he started talking to other students and he actually had people to sit with at lunch."Greichen sees Score A Friend becoming a movement. INDIANAPOLIS -- 14 offenders at the Indiana Women's Prison are now enrolled in a year-long program that will teach them how to create web applications.The non-profit "Last Mile" is offering the software engineering training. Governor Eric Holcomb joined members of the first class on Thursday, along with Last Mile board members, including rapper and entrepreneur MC Hammer, to kick off the program."I've been in and out of DOC a few times in my life in the past, so I know firsthand about some of the stumbling blocks that exist. Therefore, when I heard about this program, it just really inspired me to apply, because I want to be a success," said Stacy Jennings, a Last Mile participant.Fifty women applied for the program but only 14 were selected.The idea is to arm the women with the skills needed to knock down barriers and land a job once their time behind bars is done.Business and community partners will offer internships."What I hope to get is a new beginning. The opportunity to be able to support myself, be financially stable and also help others to know it's never too late to keep moving forward," Jennings said. Introduction on coding in the Indiana Women's Prison starts on Monday. The women will be in class about 30 hours per week.Indiana is the second state in the nation to launch "Last Mile."  1365
