SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is among 25 counties throughout the nation at risk for a measles outbreak, according to a new report. According to the University of Texas, a paper published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases warns that the epidemic will worsen. The analysis considered a county’s volume of international travel from foreign countries as well as non-medical exemptions for children. Our results show how travel from regions elsewhere compounds this risk,” said the study’s lead author, Sahotra Sarkar.Sarkar’s team accurately predicted major outbreaks in areas of Washington, Oregon and New York. Cook County, Illinois, Los Angeles County, Miami-Dade County and Queens County, New York are among the most at-risk areas for an outbreak in the US, the report says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rancho Bernardo High School briefly went on “secure campus” Monday morning after receiving an anonymous threat.According to the school, employees received an email threatening violence against the campus around 9:30 a.m. Monday. The threats weren’t specific to Rancho Bernardo High School, according to a letter sent to parents.Employees notified police, who had officers on campus within a few minutes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Roughly 24 hours after stepping foot on Hawaiian soil, San Diego mother Christina Adele said that she and her family flew back home from vacation once Hawaiian state health officials had them quarantine after not accepting their negative test results.“I was in tears,” she told ABC10 News. She said that before the trip she checked Hawaii's entry checklist which requires a negative nucleic acid amplification test performed by a trusted partner, including CVS Pharmacy. She said that she and her family went to a CVS in Poway to get tested, which is where she said that she clarified with CVS staff that their testing would be adequate. “I said, ‘We're going to Hawaii. We need to make sure this is not an antigen or antibody test,’ and they assured me it wasn't,” she added.The family’s excitement quickly faded after their plane touched down in Hawaii. Adele said that Hawaiian health officials did not accept their tests and said that her family was instructed to quarantine for 14 days in their room at their resort.“[The resort staff said] if we see you out at all we're going to call the Hawaiian Police Department and you will go to jail,” she told ABC10 News. “I didn't pack much of anything for my son. I had some diapers and some things but I was thinking I was going to buy all that stuff in Hawaii.”She said her family couldn’t handle the quarantine so they flew back home the next day.“[I got] an email saying that [Hawaiian health officials] reread our COVID tests and they actually are valid and we could be immediately released from quarantine," she said a day after returning home.Part of the email reads: "Aloha, your COVID test has been read and you have been released from quarantine."“The whole ridiculous part is we had the negative COVID tests from the trusted partner,” she added.State health officials in Hawaii emailed the following to ABC10 News: 1901
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans are signing up to build accessory dwelling units, or granny flats, in numbers that haven’t been seen in years. According to the city’s development services department people, more than 200 people went through the permitting process in 2018. “It fits for us to build an additional unit, the ADU since the council changed their ordinances,” said San Diego resident Efrain Conrique. Efrain Conrique has been in the same house since the 1960s but is now planning to build a 1,100 square foot accessory dwelling unit in his backyard. The house is for his granddaughter. "Now this way she can not pay for the rental of an apartment and live here,” Conrique said. “So that's a personal thing, but it would work no matter what.” RELATED: Woman builds granny flat to finance retirementThe ease in regulations is having an impact on the building community. "When you build a custom ADU it ads on to the square footage,” said Gregg Cantor of Murray Lampert Design, Build, Remodel. “The resale value is much higher.” Gregg Cantor says he’s working on several projects that wouldn’t have been possible without the recent regulation changes. He says since the City of San Diego streamlined the ADU process, nearly half calls he gets are people looking to build. Geiler says in the past few years city officials have expanded the zones in which ADU’s are allowed, eliminated the parking requirements, increased the size from 700 square feet from 700 to 1200, and waived Development Impact Fees, Facility Benefit Assessment Fees and General Plan Maintenance Fees for the construction of “companion units,” otherwise known as accessory dwelling units or granny flats. “These are all getting approved, and in the cases where we're finding there may be an issue with the setback encroachment or parking we're working with the applicants the homeowners, designers to find solutions,” Geiler said. 2587
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is home to the nation’s largest concentration of military personnel. As part of our Making It in San Diego initiative, we want to make sure veterans know there is potentially money available to them. 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt spoke to professionals in the field, as well as two veterans who are currently applying for benefits.Linda Urbina, Director of Client Services for Golden Care explains the different benefit packages. Aide & Attendance, while difficult to qualify for, will go a long way in paying a veteran's assisted living costs. A veteran would have to be found to have 30 percent of their medical needs deemed 'service-related.' Anything less than 30 percent could be covered by a benefit called Home Health Aide Care. That provides assistance with activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, personal grooming, bathing, toileting/incontinence care, transferring, and transportation. A veteran would have to need assistance with at least two of these ADL's to qualify for this program.Urbina has gone into homes to find a veteran whose needs are not being met and has called adult protective services. Later she finds out they could have received help from the VA. She sees wives "bent low from the burden of care giving" and veterans who "feel guilty" for being a burden. He strongly suggests a veteran "go talk with a veteran services officer at the VA., ask questions, sit down with someone and see if you might qualify for help." He acknowledges the VA is over-burdened, but he tells his clients not to give up. He says persistence pays off. It disappoints Watt to see someone wait years or decades before coming in. Among his clients are World War II veterans who waited more than 70 years to ask for help.10News called the local office of the Veteran's Administration. They recommended people go to the VA website. He's waiting to get a response.Vietnam veteran George Simons has multiple health problems and after recently having a stroke he says he's "basically bed bound." His wife Cyndy has been caring for him for years. The medical bills have mounted, and take the majority of their money. Other things around the house have had to go unattended. After years of what he and his wife describe as a frustrating battle with the VA, Simon now receives Homemaker benefits which give him an in-home caretaker 12 hours a day, and a pension benefit of 20 percent of his Navy pay. They are still pursuing greater benefits.Watt tells both couples to "keep at it. and don't take no for an answer." 3834
