Retailers pulled some name brand dog food from store shelves after a euthanasia drug was found in several products."I was a little surprised, but at the same time you hear all sorts of stuff about what is and what isn't in dog food," said Sam Porach, pet owner.The FDA started an investigation after a TV station tested several cans of Gravy Train dog food and found 60 percent contained pentobarbital, a drug used to euthanize animals, found in some products."It's a tranquilizing drug that is sometimes used by veterinarians in animal shelters to reduce anxiety in animals and ultimately put them to sleep," said Jackie Bowen, the executive director of Clean Label Project.The Clean Label Project is a non-profit aimed at educating people about toxins in products, including pet food."This industry needs to do a lot more testing and be a lot more critical of the ingredients used in its products," said Bowen.The J.M. Smucker Co. owns the brands in question including Gravy Train, Kibble 'N Bits, Skippy and Ol' Roy.  The company is investigating how pentobarbital got into the supply chain."One possible way is through contaminated ingredients," Bowen said.Between recalls and reading labels, pet owners are left trying to navigate what's really safe."Try to go all natural type yah know baked treats and stuff," pet owner Ryan Searle said."I feel like there's been a pretty big movement lately on knowing what's in your dogs' food and having higher quality foods," Porach said.Smucker's said the low level of the drug found in the food does not pose a threat to pets, but admit it's not acceptable. Gavin Newsom eased the sentences or criminal histories of nearly three dozen current or former felons on Tuesday.They include 10 pardons intended to aid immigrants who face the possibility of deportation.One of the 10 is currently in a federal immigration detention facility. ROCHESTER HILLS, Michigan — A Michigan man is accused of trying to kill a teen after the boy allegedly knocked on his door for directions.Jeff Zeigler, 53, a former Detroit firefighter, is charged with assault with intent to murder over the incident.Lee Kolozsvary, a long-time friend of Zeigler's says he's blown away by the allegations and thinks he was just trying to scare away the teen at the door.During a hearing on Friday, Zeigler said the public isn't hearing the whole store.Brennan Walker, 14, got lost on his way to school without a phone after missing the bus."I guess I put my hand up, I don't really remember, and I started to run," Walker said. "I looked back behind me and I saw him aiming at me and I turned back. I turned back and I heard the gunshot."Walker's family said the thought he was trying to break in. It was all caught on security video.Kolozsvary says he doesn't think Zeigler had any intent to kill."The Jeff Zeigler I know, he's a good guy," Kolozsvary said. (AP) -- Inmates in California prisons would be housed by their gender identity according to a bill moving through the state Legislature.The California Senate voted 29-7 on Thursday to require the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to ask inmates their gender identity and to put them in prisons designed for that gender. The only exception would be if the department believed it would pose a significant security risk.The bill would require the department to refer to inmates by their preferred gender pronoun.Bill author Sen. Scott Wiener, a San Francisco Democrat, says transgender women put in prisons with men are often assaulted and raped and put in isolation for their safety.The bill now heads to the state Assembly. 771

Gavin Newsom a measure eliminating the California Posse Comitatus Act of 1872.The nearly 150-year-old law makes it a misdemeanor with a fine of up to ,000 for failing to help police make an arrest or catch a fleeing suspect.Democratic Sen.
