SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido firefighter is being praised for a small act of kindness that impacted a 7-year-old in a big way.Last week the department was responding to palm trees on fire. That's when Craig Domingue, a fire engineer, noticed Eli walking with his mom. "We happened to be walking and spotted the fire truck. Eli kind of, his anxiety was kicking in," said Eli's mom, Monica Zamora. Eli is on the autism spectrum; loud noises and first responders give him anxiety. "I just went up to him and introduced myself and talked to him like I would talk to any person, and it was a really neat interaction," said Domingue.Domingue says he was able to recognize Eli was on the spectrum because his 10-year-old son is too. He was able to calm Eli down and thanked him for picking up trash."Eli at the time was out picking up trash, which is so neat that he's here doing something good for our community, just like all the other firefighters that are here doing good for the community," said Domingue. "We do go pick up trash a lot, but it's not often people acknowledge him and thank him for what he's doing," said Zamora. Zamora shared the positive interaction on Facebook, and over 1,000 people have reacted to the post. Many have since messaged Zamora, thanking Eli for all he does in the community. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A stretch of Harbor Drive near San Diego International Airport was shut down after a deadly crash Wednesday morning.The single-vehicle crash was reported just after 11 a.m. on northbound Harbor Drive, about a mile from the airport’s Terminal 1.ABC 10News learned a blue car traveling at a high rate of speed on the southbound side struck an object, lost control and then crossed the median onto the northbound lanes before coming to rest.The driver was declared dead at the scene.Due to the wreck, authorities were forced to close off at least one lane on northbound Harbor Drive, creating a lengthy backup for motorists heading towards the airport. 676

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An old airport terminal turned innovation lab hopes to ultimately improve the customer experience at San Diego International Airport (SAN).The second group of innovators has begun the 16-week accelerator program to "field test" and develop their concepts in a real-world airport environment.The Innovation Lab was launched to reduce barriers for innovators to break into the aviation industry. Its goals are to develop concepts that can enhance the passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, increase revenues and/or decrease costs. The 3,500-square-foot space offers a functional mini-terminal area with ticket counters and a bag claim carousel, all without passenger or security concerns to work around."We wanted to provide a location where we could invite innovators in to test their solutions," said Rebecca Bloomfield, spokesperson for SAN. Jon Wisner, Director of Business Development & Partnerships at HOHM Inc., says they've already gotten good feedback on a sleeping pod they hope to bring to airports. "What we are trying to validate is the best usage for the pod - whether it be used for a nap, lactation room, or privacy just in general, meditation, prayer," said Wisner. The pods are currently being tested by airport staff. The five entrants include: AirporTour - testing interactive airport guides with audio tours Ciari Guitars, Inc. - offering a guitar kiosk featuring a foldable, travel guitar where travelers can play and/or listen to music while relaxing HOHM, Inc. - providing high-tech sleep pods for travelers to rest in for 30-minute to four-hour periods in otherwise underutilized space InnoTech Systems LLC - using autonomous robot guides to provide navigation through the airport and other travel assistance Nuvve Corporation - pioneering vehicle-to-grid applications at airports with excess electric vehicle (battery-stored) energy sold back to the grid or buildings during peak demand timesAt the end of 16 weeks the companies will have a chance to pitch their company and hopefully land a contract with SAN. 2085

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego photographer is searching for a mystery couple seen in a Sunset Cliffs engagement photo.Elmer Rodriguez says he was out for a walk with his kids taking pictures of the sunset in late February. When he looked off to the side, he says he spotted the couple in the distance and decided to capture the special moment. “I decided it’s a good memory and they should have it,” Rodriguez said. But when Rodriguez walked over to meet the couple, he says they vanished. San Diego (KGTV) - About a hundred people packed the auditorium at Crown Point in Pacific Beach Wednesday night to sound off about the deckles bikes and scooters invading their community.The PB Town Council held the meeting.  Representatives from LimeBike, Ofo, BIRD, and Mobike were present to take questions from the crowd.RELATED: Coronado to begin impounding dockless?bikes, fining companiesThe two main concerns dealt with encroachment issues and safety concerns. The dockless bike and scooter rental model involves people checking them out using an app, but after they’re done using them, they can leave them anywhere for the next rider to find and use.Many complained of the vehicles cluttering sidewalks, storefronts and residential blocks.Other say people are riding them illegally, either because they are too young, without a helmet, or riding them without where the vehicles are not allowed.“They have no regard for human life I think someone is going to die,” one woman said.“it's with anything new right? You have a couple of bad actors that don’t know how to operate the vehicle responsibly,” Zack Bartlett with LimeBike said. “The community seems to be behind the technology.  We’re also in 45 markets, so this isn’t our first rodeo.
