(CNN) — Responding to customers' demands, Whole Foods is ramping up its war on disposable plastic.The Amazon-owned company announced Monday that will stop offering plastic straws across all of its 500 stores in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Whole Foods claims it's the first national grocery chain to make the environmentally friendly move.The company currently offers plastic straws to customers at its juice and coffee bars, as well at its cafes. It will start offering paper straws beginning in July. Plastic straws will still be available for customers with disabilities, upon request.Whole Foods will also reduce its plastic usage in other parts of the store. It will also offer smaller plastic bags in the produce department and will start using new bags for its rotisserie chickens that use 70% less plastic than the hard plastic cases they will replace."We recognize that single-use plastics are a concern for many of our customers, Team Members and suppliers, and we're proud of these packaging changes, which will eliminate an estimated 800,000 pounds of plastics annually," Whole Foods' chief merchandising officer AC Gallo said in a statement.The company stopped offering disposable plastic bags in 2008. A driver who ignored barricades on a Pawnee County Road was hospitalized after his vehicle was swallowed by a sinkhole, authorities say.Four county deputy units and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded to the wreck on County Road 5715 just outside the Arkansas River community of Blackburn before 11 p.m. on Wednesday. According to investigators, the man drove around multiple ODOT barricades. A fisherman reportedly witnessed it. The road has broken apart in pieces in recent days, with entire portions of it missing due to massive flooding.The vehicle had to be left in the sinkhole overnight because crews were unable to recover it. They are expected to remove it today.Mercy EMS transported the man, who has not yet been identified, to a Tulsa hospital so he could be treated for head trauma, officials say. According to locals, he had a dog with him, which was not injured.We’re told ODOT immediately was dispatched to place added barricades around the area, which deputies say clearly was blocked when the driver bypassed them. Driving or walking around barricades not only is dangerous and could place you in a life-threatening situation, but it is illegal. A Florida family is mourning the loss of their puppy Zeus, who died while protecting two of their four children from a venomous snake.Oriley Richardson, 10, was playing in his family's backyard in Webster on September 23 when the 9-month-old pit bull suddenly jumped towards him, his mother Gina Richardson told CNN on Sunday. Oriley noticed the pup attacking something on the ground, but thought it was a rope.It was a coral snake. And Zeus was doing his best to keep it away from Oriley.As the dog struggled to keep the snake at bay, Orion, 11, stepped into the backyard to change Zeus' water.That's when Zeus decided to lay down on the snake, using his body weight to smother the deadly predator and prevent it from harming the boys.Orion noticed that Zeus' eyes looked "bugged out," Richardson said. That's when they turned him over and discovered the snake, which had bitten Zeus four times before he bit off and swallowed its head.The family rushed Zeus to a nearby animal hospital, where staff immediately administered anti-venom.Sadly, it was too late. Zeus died the following day -- the same day as Oriley's birthday."I just started bawling," Richardson said. "My kids woke up and heard me crying and then they too started crying. We were all an emotional wreck."The family, including Sega, Zeus' mom, went to the hospital to say goodbye."Sega goes over to Zeus' head and puts her paws up on the table and takes a sniff," said Richardson. "Her ears came back, she got down, she instantly jumped on the sofa next to me and put her head on my thigh in sorrow. At that moment not only was my family broken, but his own mother was broken."Richardson said she feels "forever grateful" to Zeus and considers him a hero. "I feel like I may have lost one of my children had he not been there," she said.Oriley is especially saddened over Zeus' death. "He was a good boy and I loved him with all my heart," he said. "I played with him all the time. I feel sad and I miss him."Gary Richardson, the boys' father, said he hopes Zeus' selfless act will help change public perception of pit bulls."He was my best friend," said Gary Richardson. "I'm torn between wanting to be happy that this situation has brought awareness to his breed and their kind and loving nature, and the sorrow of having lost him." 2313

“You might have heard about them in the news--murderers, violent, destructive--and I can tell you that a lot of what you heard is true, because I used to be a member of MS-13," Gerardo Lopez shared in a recent TED Talk.Gerardo Lopez's story isn’t fictional. The gang warfare and drive-by shootings are a part of his true-life story."I was 14 years old... and I was going to join MS-13," Lopez said.MS-13 is an international gang rooted in Los Angeles with ties to Central America. It's widely considered one of the most dangerous organized crime organizations on the west coast and Lopez spent years on the inside.He carries pieces of his past wherever he goes; they're forever imprinted on his body. However, that past carried him onto the stage or an unlikely appearance as part of the TED Talk series. Lopez was picked out of thousands of applicants to tell his personal story in a setting usually reserved for influencers, like CEO's, celebrities, and motivational speakers.“Picture this: El Salvador -- the 1980s -- a brutally violent civil war, military soldiers kicking in front doors in the middle of the night," Lopez said. Growing up in a rundown neighborhood, with very few programs at school, Lopez wanted to be part of a community with power, pride and respect. That community was right down the street.“It was hard to find a different outlet... it was always there," Lopez said.By the time he was a teenager, his life was already consumed by drugs, alcohol, and gun violence. Gerardo says some of his closest friends were killed. "It was hurt people... hurting... hurt people," Lopez said.He spent years trapped in that lifestylem until he was approached by a friend who'd found his way out of gang life."He approached me, and he said that he started the group Homies Unidos and I was like, 'whoa what's that, and I don't think I want to go ahead and join that, ya know.' And he was like 'well, you should go ahead and give it a try' and he was a former MS-13 gang member... a person I looked up to," Lopez said.Homies Unidos is a violence prevention and intervention organization."It's a group that opens up the doors for kids that want change in their lives, or they feel lost," he describes. "They feel that nobody listens to them. They feel isolated at times." Lopez says being a part of Homies Unidos, and becoming an activist against gang violence, gave him more power, pride and respect than he had ever experienced with MS-13. So much so, that years later, he felt inspired to become a director of the organization in 2016. “Everybody has a story, right? So, it's about them having the Homies Unidos format as a safe haven for them to go ahead and share their life stories of the stuff they've been through. And not only the stuff they've been through, but now, how is it that they're going to go ahead and help others as well," Lopez said.Homies Unidos prevents kids from entering gangs and helps those already in gangs to get out. The goal is to guide kids so they can relate to each other, teaching them to become a productive member of society. Sergio Gomez started attending the group after having issues in school. He says the group saved him because he's now graduatingAs a leader of the peer-led group, Gomez says he's able to help others who are facing the same challenges.“I’m like, 'bro, why are you leaving? Just stay in school because it's better for you. What are you going to do on the streets, nothing? So keep in class,’” Gomez said.Gomez aspires to be like Lopez, potentially starting his own Homies Unidos chapter and maybe one day delivering his own motivational speech.As for Gerardo's TED Talk, it's been watched more than 3 million times on YouTube, providing a glimpse at why getting out of gangs can be difficult -- even deadly -- for kids without any other options.“A lot of people that didn't know now know the work that we're doing in gang intervention, and how important it is to go ahead and do this kind of work. And humanize those that some people at times demonize. People just want to belong… to be a part of something.
