SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Economic forecasters are beginning to warn of a possible 2020 recession, and the impact they say will be felt in the Golden State, according to a new report by UCLA.“Don’t celebrate the 3.1% GDP growth estimate for the first quarter of 2019,” writes UCLA Anderson Professor Emeritus Edward Leamer. Leamer is quoted in a recent report produced by the UCLA Anderson School of Management. According to Leamer, the data actually increases the risk of a recession at some point in the next couple of years. Nationally, economic growth is expected to slow marginally to 2.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2019 and 1.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020. One forecaster says you can expect California unemployment to rise modestly. “Weakness in housing as well as the slowing U.S. economy is reflected in a very modest growth rate in the U.S. in late 2020,” UCLA Anderson Forecast director Jerry Nickelsburg writes. “As a consequence, we expect California’s average unemployment rate to rise slightly to an average of 4.6% in the first quarter of 2021. For the entire year for 2020 and 2021, we expect average unemployment rates of 4.3% and 4.4%, respectively.”Meanwhile, personal income growth in the state of California is forecast at 2.9 percent in 2019. But the report warns that income growth is expected to slow to 1.9 percent by 2020.It’s not all bad news, however, income growth is expected to rise fairly quickly again in 2021, and is forecast to reach 2.1 percent by the end of the year. So far this season, 341 people have died from the flu including two new deaths reported over the last week.Those who died ranged in age from one to 101.The high number of deaths this season is a result of an unusually severe flu season, but was also due to better reporting and tracking, County Health and Human Services reported.“It appears that we’re at the end of this flu season,” said Wilma Wooten M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “However, people should continue to take precautions to avoid contracting the virus.”In total, more than 20,000 lab-confirmed flu cases were reported this flu season compared to just over 5,400 the previous year. 880

Instead, they sleep on couches, with siblings, or even the floor.When 13-year-old Lilia Montiel learned about the problem, she wanted to help fix it. Montiel's dad is a speech and language pathologist who works at several schools, including Empower Charter School. While working there one day, he learned his student had suffered rat bites due to sleeping on the floor.“That really struck a chord in my heart and made me really sad," remembers Lilia. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeowners in La Mesa are being warned their houses could be at risk of a destructive pest: Formosan subterranean termites.San Diego-based company Thrasher Termite & Pest Control made the unfortunate discovery this month in a La Mesa home."Unlike native subterranean termites, the termites we observed were extremely active, didn't flee when disturbed, and the soldiers went into attack mode. They had hollowed out large areas of structural wood, always staying just beneath the exterior paint and unnoticed by the homeowner," said Garrett Thrasher.They're deemed "super-termites" due to enormous colonies up to two million strong. The pests can cause significant structural damage within six months unlike traditional dry-wood termites, which take 10-15 years to do similar damage.RELATED: Heat and humidity creating perfect conditions for bugsThe invasive species of termites was first discovered in La Mesa in 1992. Efforts to eradicate the population were thought to be successful, but pest control experts say that's no longer the case. Years after the discovery, monitoring efforts eventually stopped due to a lack of funding."They can't fly very far, but there's so many of them that they've continued to survive since the last sighting," said Thrasher.About 60 homeowners have received letters from San Diego County officials warning of potential risk.Thrasher says it's hard to say how large the problem is but he believes the pests have a strong foothold in the area.According to the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, the 1992 Formosan subterranean termite infestation was estimated to be about ten years old. This age corresponds to a time that a family living at the epicenter of the affected area brought wood and potted plants with them when they moved to La Mesa from Hawaii.
