SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just ahead of this holiday week, San Diego's Cross Border Xpress (CBX) unveiled new biometric facial comparison technology. The CEO of the sky bridge that connects travelers directly to the Tijuana International Airport told ABC 10News that it will further secure and streamline travel into the United States.The U.S.-Mexico border is still closed to non-essential travel because of COVID-19. CBX CEO Jorge Goytortua said CBX is still not encouraging people to travel right now but if they do, they can take advantage of this technology.“Within seconds, the technology will recognize the passenger in a [Customs and Border Protection (CBP)] database,” said Goytortua. He told ABC 10News that the comparison process happens only at a time and place where travelers are already required by law to verify their identity by presenting travel documents. Goytortua says that when a traveler arrives at the CBP processing area, he or she will have a photo taken at the primary inspection point. A CBP officer will do a review by retrieving the traveler's passport or visa photo from government holdings. The new photo will be compared to the previously collected photo.“It's going to be a hands-free process. It's going to be a much faster process,” he told ABC 10News.He added that CBX does not have access to the photos. Only CBP officers can see them. If travelers are still concerned about privacy, he said it's not mandatory to use the technology. “You can ask the officer if you don’t want to be processed like that then you will be processed the traditional way with your document read it on the scan. A CBP officer [will] research on their system and make sure that the person that is presenting the document is the one there in front of the officer,” he stated. 1790

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just in time for the San Diego Zoo's reopening this month, a recent animal addition will be making his debut.A 2-month-old male pygmy hippopotamus, named Akobi, and his mother, Mabel, have been moved from the park's maternity habitat to the main pygmy hippo habitat in the Lost Forest area of the zoo.Akobi, born on April 9 and the first success pygmy hippo birth at the zoo in more than 30 years, stayed close to his mom once introduced to the habitat. But the zoo says he's already exploring the large pool, new terrain, and other animals in the shared habitat.RELATED: San Diego Zoo, Safari Park to reopen June 20"We’re excited to welcome guests back to the San Diego Zoo, so they can see this adorable calf who has brought his wildlife care team so much joy," said Leanne Klinski, wildlife care specialist for primates. The animals live in rivers and streams in the forests of West Africa. Less than 2,500 pygmy hippos now remain in Africa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Keeping kids active, while also letting them follow their passion, is a top priority for a lot of parents.But often it comes at a cost. A new study from CompareCards.com shows that 46% of parents spend more than ,000 a year on activities for their kids, and 27% spend more than ,000. "As much as we love our kids as parents, and as much as we want them to pursue their dreams, life is expensive in 2019," says Matt Schulz, an Industry Analyst with CompareCards.com. "Parents are spending an awful lot of money to keep their kids in these activities."According to the study, 62% of parents admit they go into debt to pay for it all. 64% of parents say the costs cause them added stress.RELATED: Making It In San Diego: Community colleges offer free tuition to San Diego students"It's important to support your kids and teach them to follow their dreams," says Schulz. "But you also have to be able to do so without ruining your own dreams."One San Diego parent thinks she has a way to help. Jessica Mendez is trying to launch an online marketplace where parents can trade used sports equipment to help defray the costs."Every season, kids grow," says Mendez. "Every few months you have to purchase new cleats, a new bat to grow with them."Mendez has four boys that have been involved in all kinds of sports. As they've grown, old equipment has piled up in her garage. But it's worth it."I want them to be well rounded and exposed to many opportunities," she says, adding that the activities keep her kids away from doing anything that may get them into trouble.The study also found that nearly 80% of parents believe their child's activities could one day lead to income, whether in the form of a scholarship, job or side-hustle.Schulz says it's also essential to involve your children in discussions about how their activities factor into the budget."It makes sense to be open and honest with your kids about the cost of these things," he says. 3411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In anticipation of Fire Prevention Week, Cal Fire is urging Californians to pre-plan for the worst case scenario.According to Cal Fire, homes today burn faster than ever, leaving just minutes to escape once the smoke alarm sounds.This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “look, listen and learn.” In support of the week, the agency is asking Californians to develop a fire plan and practice it.RELATED: Woman, mad at ex-boyfriend, accused of sparking massive Maryland apartment fireCal Fire offers tips on making the plan, such as checking to make sure fire alarms are working and making sure there are two ways out of every room like a door and window.Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of house fires, Cal Fire says.
