LOS ANGELES (AP) — Health officials say the number of coronavirus cases in California is surging to the highest level since the start of the pandemic. The California Department of Health and Human Services reported more than 15,000 cases Saturday and another 14,000 cases on Sunday. They come even before the Thanksgiving holiday that has many health officials concerned. A curfew took effect Saturday requiring people to stay home from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. affecting most Californians, and Los Angeles is on the verge of an even tougher lockdown. Meanwhile, more than 200 people at a San Francisco Bay Area racetrack have tested positive. 644
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The leader of a Southern California white supremacist group and two other members were arrested on charges of inciting a deadly riot in Charlottesville, Virginia, last year, prosecutors said Wednesday. The arrests come weeks after other group members were indicted in Virginia on similar charges.Rise Above Movement leader Robert Rundo was arrested Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport and was denied bail in Los Angeles federal court on Wednesday, U.S. Attorney's office spokesman Thom Mrozek said. Two others, Robert Boman and Tyler Laube, were arrested Wednesday morning and Aaron Eason remains at large, Mrozek said. All four are charged with traveling to incite or participate in riots. Attorney information for the defendants could not immediately be found.RELATED: 4 men charged in violent Charlottesville rally described as 'serial rioters'The men allegedly took actions with the "intent to incite, organize, promote, encourage, participate in, or carry on riots" last year in Charlottesville and in the California cities of Huntington Beach, Berkeley and San Bernardino, according to a complaint from the U.S. Attorney's office."RAM members violently attacked and assaulted counter-protesters at each of these events," the complaint said.Prosecutors have described the Rise Above Movement as a militant white supremacist group that espouses anti-Semitic and other racist views and meets regularly to train in boxing and other fighting techniques. The latest arrests come just weeks after the indictments of four other California members of RAM for allegedly inciting the Virginia riot.In August 2017, they made their way to the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville with their hands taped, "ready to do street battle," U.S. Attorney Thomas Cullen said at a press conference announcing the charges earlier this month.Hundreds of white nationalists descended on Charlottesville in part to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.Clashes erupted Aug. 11 as a crowd of white nationalists marching through the University of Virginia campus carrying torches and chanting racist slogans encountered a small group of counter-protesters.The next day, more violence broke out between counter-protesters and attendees of the "Unite the Right" rally, which was believed to be the largest gathering of white nationalists in at least a decade. Street fighting exploded before the scheduled event could begin and went on for nearly an hour in view of police until authorities forced the crowd to disperse. After authorities forced the rally to disband Aug. 12, Heather Heyer, 32, was killed when a car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters.The death toll rose to three when a state police helicopter that had been monitoring the event crashed, killing two troopers. 2837

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Adult film star Ron Jeremy pleaded not guilty Monday to 20 additional rape and other sexual assault charges involving 12 more women and a teenage girl in attacks dating back to 2004, bringing the number of his alleged victims to 17.In June, Jeremy, 67, entered a not guilty plea in response to allegations that he raped three women and sexually assaulted another in separate attacks going back to 2014.The District Attorney's Office amended the complaint Monday against the defendant -- whose real name is Ronald Jeremy Hyatt -- to include a total of eight forcible rapes and lewd conduct with a 15-year-old girl, among other counts.Jeremy is being held in lieu of .6 million bail, despite an earlier defense request to lower the amount, and was ordered back to court Oct. 28, when a date is expected to be set for a preliminary hearing. If convicted on all counts, the porn star could face up to 250 years to life in prison.Prosecutors said the victims range in age from 15 to 54 and that the teen was assaulted at a party she attended in Santa Clarita. The most recent allegation was made by a 21-year-old woman who alleged that Jeremy sexually assaulted her on New Year's Day outside a business in Hollywood.A half-dozen of the other alleged assaults happened inside a West Hollywood bar the defendant frequented and another took place in the bar's parking lot, according to prosecutors. The defendant is accused of raping a 25-year-old woman at a home in West Hollywood in May 2014. He is also charged with raping a 33-year-old woman and sexually assaulting a 46-year-old woman on separate occasions at a West Hollywood bar in 2017 and raping a 30-year-old woman at the same bar last July, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The amended charges include eight counts of forcible rape, seven counts of sexual battery by restraint, four counts of forcible oral copulation, three counts of sexual penetration by use of force and one count each of sodomy, assault with intent to commit rape, sexual penetration by anesthesia or controlled substance, sexual penetration by a foreign object, sexual penetration on an unconscious or sleeping victim and lewd conduct with a minor. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the case stemmed from a two-year investigation. 2327
