Walgreens will close about 200 locations across the United States as part of its plan to cut costs. After buying roughly half of Rite Aid's stores two years ago, Walgreens expanded its American footprint to more than 9,500 stores. The planned closures represent less than 3% of Walgreens locations. The closures will cause "minimal disruption to customers and patients," Walgreens said in a statement. The company will also find jobs for the affected employees in nearby locations. Walgreens did not provide a list of the stores that it plans to close.Parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance announced in June it would close 200 of its more than 2,400 Boots stores in the United Kingdom. The company expects the combined closures to save it .5 billion annually by the end of fiscal 2022. Earlier this year, Walgreens issued a weak profit outlook for 2019, so it pledged to cut costs to boost earnings.Walgreens faces a litany of challenges, including lower prices for generic drugs and a persistent decline in reimbursement rates for medications from state and federal government health care plans. The company revealed in a regulatory filing Tuesday that will take a pre-tax charge of as much as .4 billion for the closures.Rival CVS offered a far rosier outlook. It reported stronger-than-expected earnings Wednesday and boosted its full-year outlook. 1366

When Don Grundmann took the podium to boos and jeers at a Modesto City Council meeting Wednesday, he appeared angry that some people had called his efforts to organize a "straight pride" event in the California city racist. He singled out Councilmember Kristi Ah You, accusing her of "pulling the race card" and allegedly inflaming tensions by "attacking us as racists."Then he appeared to make a slip of the tongue."We haven't done anything," he said. "We're a totally peaceful, racist group."The crowd erupted in laughter. As Grundmann tried to regain control of the room, he said his group was "here to defend all races" and claimed that Planned Parenthood was the "greatest mass murderer of blacks in this nation's history."Shortly after, he was told his time was up and the crowd booed as he left the podium.Grundmann, who previously ran two failed campaigns for the US Senate, leads a group called the National Straight Pride Coalition. It claims on its website that heterosexuality, the nuclear family and Western civilization, among other institutions, are under attack. The group is planning a "straight pride" parade in a local park on August 24.Modesto is home to about 214,000 people, according to the latest Census.Dozens of residents voiced oppositionOver more than four hours, almost 30 constituents spoke against the event. A handful spoke in favor of it, citing free speech.Matthew Mason, a Modesto native and Turlock resident, called event organizers "white supremacists.""I'm here to condemn the straight pride event and to unequivocally state that this white supremacist rhetoric is not speech that deserves protection," Mason said at the meeting. "Whenever this rhetoric is given a platform, violence always follows."CNN has attempted to reach Grundmann but was unable to leave a message because his voice mailbox was full. He has not responded to an email request for comment.Marjorie Sturdy, vice president of the Modesto Progressive Democrats, also voiced her opposition at the meeting."You've never heard of anybody losing a job because they're straight or white," she told CNN. "You've never heard of anybody not being able to obtain a job because they're straight. The entitlement of being straight and white shouldn't be celebrated. You get to celebrate that every day of your life."Sturdy said that the Modesto Progressive Democrats are teaming up with local community groups to organize an event on the same day as the "straight pride" parade. She said it will include music, speeches and prayer."It'll be a colorful, fun, celebration of life," Sturdy said. The 'straight pride' event needs city approvalThe City of Modesto said it hopes to decide on the "straight pride" application Friday.Thomas Reeves, spokesman for the City Manager, told CNN that officials are evaluating the risk to the city, residents and participants. He added that the city's final determination would not be an indication of where it stood on the issue."Whatever decision is made on the permit is no way is a reflection of the city's perspective, opinion or views on the issue," Reeves said.In late June, a "straight pride parade" planned in Boston on August 31 became 3183

What do you do with your leftovers? For many Americans, it ends up in the trash; the average American wastes a pound a day of food per USDA figures. But an organization in Indiana is taking leftovers to fulfill a need in the community. The organization is called Cultivate, and it is based in South Bend, Indiana. Cultivate, a nonprofit organization, takes food left from event centers, convention centers and banquets. The leftovers are then repackaged and repurposed. “We get great food that’s been donated that’s made by really great chefs that had been going into the trash can,” Jim Conklin of Cultivate said. Food such as prime rib, lobster bisque and fresh vegetables sometimes make it to Cultivate's kitchen. The food then ends up in the stomachs of children, many of whom were not receiving meals outside of their school breakfasts and lunches. Principal of Madison Steam Academy Deb Martin said she has seen first-hand the effects of poverty in her school. Martin said that 93 percent of her students live in poverty. “When you have a limited amount of funds sometimes the first thing to go is your food source, especially if you have a larger family,” Martin said. In the past, Martin noticed that students came to school extra hungry on Monday mornings after going the weekend without being fed.“On Monday’s, our kids run to breakfast,” Martin said, “and when you have that, you know you have food deprived children.”On Fridays, the students are sent home with up to six prepackaged meals prepared by Cultivate. “We believe giving a child meals over the weekend will help their education,” Conklin said. “Which is truly the only way out of poverty.”Martin is thankful for the program. “It’s a unique way to take something that was going to be waste, and now make it into doing what it’s doing for our kids filling in those gaps, feeding those kids nutritious healthy meals that they may not get,” she said. 1931

Walmart announced it will reduce its gun and ammunition sales, the company said Tuesday. The move comes about one month after more than 20 people were killed in a mass shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas. Walmart also pressured U.S. Congress to enact gun safety measures."It’s clear to us that the status quo is unacceptable," 348
