SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There have been 137 community outbreaks reported in San Diego County since June 1, according to San Diego County health officials.Since March 25, the county has reported 164 community outbreaks that have resulted in 1,220 coronavirus cases:March: 3April: 16May: 8June: 34July: 93August: 10County officials broke those numbers down from June 1, 2020, to Aug. 4, 2020, where the majority of community outbreaks have been reported at restaurant/bar and business settings. San Diego Police said Monday that the department received hundreds of calls regarding illegal fireworks this holiday weekend.Despite canceled fireworks shows throughout the city, the department received 323 calls due to fireworks this year.The figure represents a significant uptick since last year, when the city received only 76 calls about fireworks.Despite the increase in calls, San Diego Police say they aren’t aware of any injuries due to the displays.The report comes after the City of San Diego announced that it would cancel this year’s Big Bay Boom to help halt the spread of COVID-19.According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, all consumer fireworks are illegal in the City of San Diego.That list includes sparklers, firecrackers, cherry bombs, bottle rockets, and even poppers.The National Fire Protection Association says that fireworks account for more than half of reported fires in the U.S. on Independence Day. 994

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council voted in favor Tuesday of an affordable housing plan which critics say could raise rents and home prices across San Diego.The vote, which came after hours of public comment, was five to four in support of the proposal.Council President Georgette Gomez moved to require developers to reserve 10 to 15 percent of new housing units in complexes for low to moderate income households. The plan includes other options, but if all else fails the proposal would raise the affordable housing in-lieu fee developers pay by 72 percent. For a typical 1,800 square foot unit, that would be an additional ,000 in construction costs that could be passed on to tenants. “We’re in a royal housing mess, and I almost would like to say, today, believe it or not, are the good old days for housing, because we’re staring straight into a bigger problem,” said Borre Winckel, who heads the San Diego Building Industry Association. But supporters of the proposal say the city needs the housing. Many workers are now being forced to commute from far away because there is no housing available. A report last year found the region still needed more than 140,000. "We’re certainly not trying to drive the cost of housing. Our number one goal here is to try to incentivize and regulate in a more fair manner the building of affordable housing,” said Keith Maddox, of the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council. Councilman Scott Sherman, who opposes the proposal, said the larger fee would add to a market rate rental and ,000 to the price of a home. The money from the fee would go into a pot used to pay for affordable housing developments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three East San Diego County school districts are moving back to distance learning because of this weekend's harsh weather.The San Diego County Office of Education says schools in Julian Union Elementary School District and Warner Unified School District will move to distance learning on Monday. The county made move due to forecasted snow Sunday night and freezing temperatures on Monday.SDCOE added that Julian Union High School will have a snow day without distance learning with a scheduled makeup day at the end of the school year."The safety of students and school staff is of the utmost importance to San Diego County school districts," the county said in its announcement.The National Weather Service forecasts the Julian and Pine Valley areas will see one to two inches of snow overnight at 4,500 to 5,000 feet, and lows of 23 to 33 degrees. Monday, the high is expected to hover between 46 and 52 degrees before reaching the mid-50s on Tuesday.The mountain region should hit low- to mid-60s on Saturday, according to NWS. 1058
