The deadly heat wave that has blanketed much of the US is in its final day.A cold front moving through the Midwest will reach the East Coast by Monday, bringing heavy rain and cooler air, according to CNN Meteorologist Ivan Cabrera. The front will quiet days of extreme temperatures, Cabrera said. This week's high temperatures prompted cities across the US to open cooling centers, issue safety instructions to residents and cancel many outdoor events. New York's mayor declared an emergency. One death has been attributed to the high temperatures: Former NFL player Mitch Petrus, 32, died of a heat stroke after working outside Thursday during a heat advisory in Arkansas, officials said.Part of the relief comes from the dropping of overnight temperatures in the Midwest, which had often hovered near 80 degrees in the past week. While temperatures on the East Coast and Midwest may sink down to the 70s on Monday, Sunday still has some heat in store.Sunday severe weatherAlthough down from Saturday's 157 million, there are still more than 95 million people under a heat warning or advisory for Sunday. The heat index has much of the Midwest feeling as if it's in the 90s, while the East Coast faces triple digits -- with Washington, D.C., at the highest with 110.And although the more central states are being cooled a bit by the moving front, at least 350,000 people are without power across Michigan due to severe weather, according to 1451

The House Oversight Committee voted on Wednesday to hold Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in contempt of Congress over a dispute related to the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 census. The vote was 24-15.The Democratic-led committee voted on a contempt resolution that recommends that the House of Representatives find Barr and Ross in contempt of Congress "for refusal to comply with subpoenas." The contempt resolution includes citations for both civil and criminal contempt. It's unclear what will happen now that the committee has voted on the resolution. Depending on how the Departments of Justice or Commerce respond, House Democrats could go to the floor with both criminal and civil contempt. They could also drop criminal before going to the floor if some accommodation happens.According to a committee aide, a criminal contempt vote would have to go through the floor. However, civil contempt could go through the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, which is made up of the three highest-ranked House Democrats and two highest-ranked House Republicans.Earlier on Wednesday, the Department of Justice informed the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday that President Donald Trump has asserted executive privilege over materials related to the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 census. In a letter to Committee Chair Elijah Cummings, Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd 1450

The NHL and the NHL Player Association reached an agreement Friday night to move forward on a plan to resume the season, starting with a 24-team playoff. The season was suspended on March 12, as most teams had completed roughly 70 games of an 82-game schedule. The regular season was set to conclude in April, with the 16-team Stanley Cup Playoffs extending into early June. The resumption plan calls for 24 teams to participate in a playoff, while the bottom seven clubs would effectively have their seasons finished."The Executive Board of the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) has authorized further negotiations with the NHL on a 24-team return to play format to determine the winner of the 2020 Stanley Cup,” the NHLPA said in a statement. “Several details remain to be negotiated and an agreement on the format would still be subject to the parties reaching agreement on all issues relevant to resuming play."Earlier this week, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said that the season could resume with games being played in centralized locations. This would eliminate the need for travel and additional exposure to the coronavirus among players and team personnel. Bettman said that access to tests will remain a key issue in resuming the NHL season. 1282

The anonymous senior Trump administration official whose 2018 New York Times op-ed was called treasonous by President Donald Trump has written a 157

The call came late one morning, and her world changed in an instant."The reason for this call is to inform you your card has been suspended for reasons of suspicious activity," the caller said."Ann," who agreed to an interview only if we changed her name, says the caller told her she was in trouble with the law."He identified himself as an agent. He said my Social Security number was misused, and that I now had 25 bank accounts, I had illegal drug activity, and have a warrant out for my arrest for money laundering," she said. The mom of three school-aged girls was shaken. She had never had legal trouble before, and here she learned that thieves were using her Social Security number to open multiple accounts and sell drugs — crimes that could land her in jail if she did not act fast."He said I needed to prove that I only have two bank accounts, not 25, and I needed to empty my accounts," Ann said. The caller became more hostile, and told Ann there was no time to discuss her case with anyone, especially her husband."All I could think about was, 'I am going to go to jail,' I have my kids with me, and I am thinking, 'I have to do this, I have to get this done,' " she said.Caller gives instructions to avoid jailFor Ann to clear her name and avoid arrest, the agent explained she needed to empty her savings account and forward the money to the Social Security Administration, where they would put it in a safe, temporary holding account. The caller was "very believable," she said."I emptied ,000 out of my bank account," the mom said. When the teller asked her why she was withdrawing such a large sum of cash, Ann said, "I lied and told her 'furniture.' " She was too terrified to let the teller know that a federal agent was on the phone listening to the entire transaction.Ann said the caller had such influence over her, she didn't even listen to her own daughter, whom she had brought along to the bank."I wasn't myself at all," she said. "My 13-year-old was like 'Mom that's a lot of money, why are you taking all that money out?' "But calling her husband for advice was not an option. "The guy said, 'don't tell your husband, you will compromise him,' " she said. 2199
