LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) — The mother of a 13-year-old boy killed crossing San Miguel Avenue in Lemon Grove may sue the city for not making the street safer.Tanya Harris, whose son Trevon died in May, filed a claim against the city of Lemon Grove for allegedly ignoring continuing issues on the two-lane road. On May 3, Trevon was crossing the street after visiting a friend's house when he was hit by a car and killed. Tanya and Trevon's brother, Ty, who is only nine, arrived to see him lifeless on the asphalt."When I came up on the road, I immediately saw the body on the road," Tanya said. "When I pulled over, I ran out because I knew it was my child's body that was on the ground."Tanya says Trevon had an infectious smile and had dreams of playing professional basketball. Tanya and Ty are now in grief counseling, which Tanya said is helping.Meanwhile, San Miguel Avenue remains a two-lane road, and the area Trevon was hit doesn't have any speed bumps or stop signs. That's the basis for the claim, which accuses the city of ignoring the risks for years. "It has gravel all over it, and divots and pots, which causes drivers to skid and slide" said Rhonda Holmes, an attorney representing Tanya Harris. "More importantly, people are known to speed down that road."Lemon Grove City Manager Lydia Romero said the city can't comment on pending litigation. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department said its traffic investigator found no fault on the part of the driver, and that Trevon darted out into traffic. Tanya wants the city of Lemon Grove to install speed bumps or stop signs by next month, when San Miguel Elementary School starts. (KGTV) -- A 14-year-old was arrested Tuesday after reportedly making threats on social media against El Capitan High School.Sunday, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department was made aware of the threats and began investigating.Deputies were able to identify a 14-year-old student at the high school as a potential suspect, eventually arresting him at his home.RELATED: Potential threat against Scripps Ranch High School investigatedDeputies have no information of any additional threats but, out of an abundance of caution, have increased patrols in the area Tuesday.The specific nature of the threats is unclear.  645

(KGTV) - Three weeks after violence ripped through La Mesa, small businesses continue supporting one another, working toward recovery."It broke our heart when a lot of the glass was busted," Mike Miller said. He recently moved to La Mesa with his wife, Neng, charmed by the small town feel.The looting and destruction the night of May 30th after a rally against injustice sent a shockwave through the community.Leslie Thomas said she watched the horror from her balcony, just a couple blocks away. "We could see the flames and everything coming up, and we didn't sleep much that night but the next morning we got up and we said, 'you know what? We live here, what can we do to fix everything?'"That mantra reflected by hundreds who showed up that Sunday morning to help.As Leslie walked with her husband down the street they noticed "the liquor store on the corner down there, we walked by and we were like, 'Your windows aren't blown out!' and he was like, 'Everyone who knows me, who knows that I'm part of this neighborhood came out and protected my windows and I told them to go home and they wouldn't.' But he was out there giving water to everybody [Sunday] and he didn't question why he was doing it. People were giving out free coffee."A showing of sheer humanity.La Mesa neighbors aren't surprised to hear that generosity is still being extended weeks later.La Mesa Glass replaced the windows at Play It Again Sports June 11th and Bohemian House Saturday for free.The owners of Bohemian House said they were incredibly grateful for their gift, helping them get back to business.10News reached out to La Mesa Glass to ask how many businesses they have supported during this time and have not heard back yet.Neighbors said even the artwork painted over plywood boards standing guard in front of many La Mesa businesses were uplifting. Words and images of hope reminded them how strong and close their community is."I don't think this is going to change us in any way, I actually think it's going to make us a stronger neighborhood," Thomas said, defining La Mesa Strong.Some of the boards have come down but there are still more than a dozen businesses with plywood protecting their broken windows. 2229

LINCOLN PARK (KGTV) - For the first time, a member of the drill team at Lincoln High School recalls the moments she was called the N-word at Friday night's football game in San Clemente. Lillian Mixon is a sophomore at Lincoln High School and she tells 10News, "A group of us were walking to the bathroom during halftime and a little boy asked me if I do flag or twirl, and I told him no, I dance, I do drill, and he responded with the N-word." Mixon says it happened again on her way back from the restroom, "I was confused and I was like did she say the N-word to me because this is a grown woman." Immediately, Mixon says, she told two security guards at the game about what happened, "I told the security guard that they were saying racial things to us and the guy looked at me and didn’t respond he just looked and turned away." Meanwhile, Orange County Sheriffs Department released a statement on social media that reads in part, "At the game an individual told deputies that the San Clemente Middle School students were on the visitor side being rowdy and obnoxious and deputies removed them from the area." They went on to say there was no mention of inappropriate language or hate speech. After the game, following normal protocal, Lincoln High athletes and coaches were escorted back to their buses. Mixon says when she got back to the bus she felt awful, "I felt awful after the game and I had to keep it together. After the game I told myself things like this happen but they never happen to me." (KGTV) - Dozens of people lined up for hours, as Play it Again Sports reopened in La Mesa on Thursday morning.Alfredo Lopez was the first in line, hoping to buy new weights."It says they're really resilient. So I think that's definitely part of what La Mesa has," Lopez says.The store had been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. But it had to stay closed longer than expected after looters destroyed the store following protests in La Mesa on May 30.The protests were over police violence, but the angry mob that attacked the Play it Again Sports came long after the protests ended."I was not happy. I was upset that night, for sure," says owner Dan Buxton. "So much had been put into the store and for all it to be taken away at that moment, it hurt."Buxton says he had to replace the ceiling, the light fixtures, the flooring, windows, displays, and much of his inventory.But he says the community helped rebuild and showed its true colors."Clearly, the real La Mesa is what we saw after May 30 and we're proud to be part of it," says Buxton.As for the line that greeted him when he opened the store Thursday, Buxton simply said, "Thank you.""Just like the support we've been receiving for the past 7 weeks, it's the same thing," he says.
