BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said here Sunday China is confident and capable of achieving its 2009 economic targets and will strengthen cooperation with the international community to fight the global financial crisis.     Despite the financial crisis impact that increased difficulties for economic operations, "the fundamentals of Chinese economy and its good outlook in the long term have not changed," said Li at the opening of the China Development Forum 2009.     China has set an 8-percent target for annual economic expansion this year after diminishing foreign orders dented exports and slowed growth to a seven-year low of 9 percent year-on-year in 2008.     To boost domestic consumption and growth, the government will exert itself to tackle issues of immediate concern to ordinary Chinese citizens such as employment, education, health care, housing and environmental protection, said Li. They included an 850 billion-yuan (124 billion U.S. dollars) medical reform plan and a comprehensive value-added tax (VAT) reform to cut enterprise and individual burdens by approximately 500 billion yuan this year.     Li also promised to maintain a stable scale of foreign trade and use of foreign capital, saying China will further open up and make use of markets and resources both at home and abroad.     China's foreign direct investment fell for the fifth consecutive month in February to 5.83 billion U.S. dollars, down 15.81 percent year-on-year. Its foreign trade was 124.95 billion U.S. dollars last month, down 24.9 percent year-on-year.     "While managing its own affairs well, China is willing to join hands with other countries and play an active role in international cooperation against the financial crisis," said Li.     The continuous growth of China's economy not only concerns the wellbeing of 1.3 billion Chinese but is also a great contribution to the world economy, he told the forum.     He called on all countries to take actions together to promote future growth of the world economy, saying the crisis should bring about "profound thinking about the world economic development and the human kind's future destiny".     People of insight in all countries should dig the deep roots of the global financial crisis and explore effective ways of preventing the crisis from spreading and avoiding a replay of such crises, said Li.     The China Development Forum 2009 runs in Beijing from Saturday to Monday with the theme of China's Development and Reform in the Global Financial Crisis.

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, will conclude its annual session Thursday morning.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the 11th CPPCC National Committee, is to deliver a speech at the closing ceremony.     The China National Radio, China Radio International and China Central Television will live broadcast the event.     The country's major news websites, including www.xinhuanet.com run by the Xinhua News Agency, www.people.com.cn run by the People's Daily and www.china.com.cn run by the China International Publishing Group will cover the closing ceremony to be held in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     The annual session of the 11th CPPCC National Committee started on March 3. BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Thursday called for innovation and more breakthroughs in key technologies in the country's machinery industry so as to make it globally competitive.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks when attending an award ceremony for role models of the machinery industry.     Jia, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, urged efforts to strengthen the sector's innovative capacity and to make progress in key technologies to accelerate and optimize its structural upgrading. UNITED NATIONS, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's UN envoy said Monday that the UN Security Council's response to the recent launch by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) should be cautious and proportionate.     "Our position on the reaction from the Security Council has been very clear and consistent. That is, the reaction from the Security Council has to be cautious and proportionate," Zhang Yesui told reporters after the council adopted a presidential statement on the DPRK launch. The UN Security Council on April 13, 2009 adopted a presidential statement on the recent launch by the Democratic People's Republic of KoreaIn the statement, the 15-member council "condemns" the April 5 launch by the DPRK and calls on all member states to "comply fully with their obligations under resolution 1718," adopted by the council in October 2006.     The statement also called for the early resumption of the six-party talks, which gather China, the DPRK, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.     "The reaction from the Security Council should be conducive to maintaining peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, and conducive to the six-party talks and also to the process of denuclearization in the Korean Peninsula, and it should be also conducive to safeguarding the international nonproliferation regime," he said.     "That's why we had been consistent in the Security Council adopting a presidential statement instead of a resolution with new sanctions," he said.     Zhang called on all the parties concerned to work together to maintain peace and stability in the region, promote the six-party talks and push forward denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

BERLIN, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese business delegation, led by Commerce Minister Chen Deming, signed here on Wednesday a total of 37 procurement deals worth around 11 billion euros (14 billion U.S. dollars) with German companies.     According to Chen, the 37 deals are composed of two parts -- purchasing contracts, and cooperation agreements which need further negotiations.     The deals focus on engineering equipment, electronics and auto vehicles like Mercedes and BMW, Chen told a press conference.     A draft deal obtained by Xinhua showed that the Chinese side agreed to buy around 37,000 BMW cars and Mini worth 2.2 billion U.S. dollars, as well as 27,000 units of Mercedes cars.     Chen revealed that apart from the current 200-member delegation, China would send more entrepreneurs to Germany to discuss further investment in both countries.     Germany is one of China's important trading partners within the European Union (EU). In 2008, the Sino-German trade hit 115 billion U.S. dollars. Despite the world economic crisis, China and Germany have vowed to maintain the trade volume unchanged this year.     Prior to the deal-signing ceremony, more than 450 Chinese and German business representatives attended a forum on exploring cooperation opportunities.     Chen and German Economic Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg condemned trade protectionism that has cropped out amid the global economic crisis.     Chen said the procurement deals reflect China's sincere objection to trade protectionism, adding that opening the market is the proper approach to address the global economic recession.     Guttenberg lauded China's procurement, and joined Chen to slap trade protectionism.     The 37-year-old minister said Germany and China are top two exporters in the world, noting that trade protectionism is a "wrong answer" to the current global financial crisis.     Germany and China should join hands to facilitate the Doha round talks, he added.     Later on Wednesday, the Chinese delegation, composed of over 200 business representatives, flew to Zurich of Switzerland to continue their procurement tour.
