EL CAJON (KGTV) -- Investigators are gathering clues to determine what caused a deadly single-car crash along a major roadway in El Cajon early Friday morning.The crash was reported at around 2:20 a.m. Friday by witnesses traveling to nearby pharmacy on Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road. The witnesses, a woman and her young daughter, called 9-1-1 after discovering a wrecked white SUV fully engulfed in flames. According to El Cajon Police, the driver was heading westbound on Fletcher Parkway when they stuck a tree. The SUV immediately caught fire.The woman and other good Samaritans tried to pull the driver out of the burning vehicle.Crews arrived and also tried to rescue the trapped motorist but the victim died in the blaze.No information about the victim has been released at this time.Both directions of Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road were closed as of 6 a.m. while officials continue their investigation. 928

(KGTV) -- Students in the Grossmont Union High School District will head back to class on Monday, Aug. 10, but the start of the new school year comes with a number of changes.For starters, all classes will be online because of the coronavirus pandemic.The district will also have new leadership, as Superintendent Theresa Kemper takes over."We have a plan that's scalable and flexible," Kemper told ABC 10News.Kemper took over as the superintendent on July 1 after Tim Glover left the position. Kemper has been with the district for nearly 25 years, with stints as an assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent.Since May, Kemper has been leading the effort to create a back to school plan for this fall amidst the pandemic."We knew it was not entirely in our control which is exactly why we created the plan the way we did," she said. "We're committed to moving into it slowly and carefully and not making mistakes as we go."According to their "Roadmap for Reopening," GUHSD will start the 2020-21 school year entirely online, complying with state and county health guidelines that say schools cannot return to in-person learning until San Diego County has been off the state coronavirus watch-list for 14 days.The full plan calls for five levels of reopening that gradually increase the number of students on campus. Level 2 allows for 25% capacity and Level 3 is 50%; Level 4 is 100% capacity, with some limited online learning. Level 5 is a return to full, in-person school.Kemper said the goal is to ease teachers and students back into the classroom, and allow for flexibility as things change."It's been a long time since teachers and students have been in classrooms together," she said. "So, we want to ease them into the process and make sure conditions are still holding for them to all be there."In response to the plan, the Grossmont Education Association, which represents the teachers in the district, released a statement on their Facebook page on July 2. It says, in part, that the changes for the coming school year "reflect our ongoing commitment to innovation and learning for all students."The statement concludes by saying, "While there are many, many other issues and details that still need to be determined, we are excited to move forward with our plans to prepare to have students on campus this fall."Teachers, meanwhile, spent the summer training and adapting their lesson plans to what Kemper calls "distance learning 2.0.""It's more interactive," she explained. EL CAJON (KGTV and wire reports) - El Cajon police are investigating the shooting death of a man that resulted following an argument along a busy street Thursday.Police said gunfire erupted in the 1400 block of East Main Street in El Cajon shortly before 9:30 a.m., about a mile west of Granite Hills High School.Witnesses told 10News that two men were arguing on the sidewalk when one man took out a gun and shot the victim. According to police, an initial investigation indicates that an off-duty security guard tried to stop either a vehicle burglary or a carjacking. At some point, the vehicle's owner got involved, shooting and killing the suspect, police say. The shooter stayed on scene and cooperated before being arrested. (KGTV) — A family jewelry shop in El Cajon is out tens of thousands of dollars after a brazen robbery Friday.A couple entered Ishtar Jewelry Store on Avocado Avenue and began browsing around. It was a seemingly ordinary evening."They were looking for different pieces of jewelry, bracelets, necklaces," said Nadin Toma, the store owner's daughter. "My mom was the one who was helping them out. The female found a piece that she liked."After that, Toma said the woman claimed she needed to get her wallet from the car to purchase the piece of jewelry."Our door to get in is an electric door," explained Toma. "We have to buzz anyone in and out just for security purposes."So, the woman was buzzed out, but Toma said she held the door open.That's when the man by her side made his move, jumping over the display counter, snatching up a handful of gold chains, then running out of the wide-open front door."They just grabbed and ran as fast as they could," Toma said. "They got away."Toma estimates the cost of the gold chains were anywhere from ,000 to ,000.But, the thief also left something behind. His fanny pack hooked onto the front door and broke off his body as he ran away.Toma said inside the fanny pack was the suspect's identification card, which she gave to police.She also said a Good Samaritan wrote down the license plate number of the car the couple used to get away."With any robbery, it's very painful for anyone who goes through it," said Toma.
