ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A homeless man used what little he has to give a selfless gift during a toy drive at a Colorado Walmart.Glen McCarthy walked to Walmart and got a cup of coffee. He was touched by the toy drive that was going on. He ended up buying a Barbie and a Hot Wheels set, but he couldn't stop thinking about a bike he saw."And I looked at that bike, and the bike was marked , but the tag underneath it said ," said McCarthy.It's not a lot of money for some, but for McCarthy, it was nearly everything. He went back to the hotel where he was staying and paid for another night. Back at the hotel, he still couldn't stop thinking about the bike.He walked back to Walmart and asked about the bike since the tag listed two different prices. Once a clerk realized what he was doing, she told him that he could have the bike for ."Another big reason I got to thinking, this is probably going to be my last Christmas. I'm no one, make some little kid happy," said McCarthy.McCarthy has always loved Christmas, and he realizes his time is running out. Doctors recently told him that his cancer is terminal, he has less than a year to live. "It took my losing everything to realize that I'm happier now struggling for everything in my life than I had when I had big money," said McCarthy.Despite being sick and homeless, he continues to volunteer at Senior Support Services in Denver. Staff at the center weren't surprised to hear what McCarthy did at Walmart."Totally sounded like Glen, yeah totally. So it's just amazing, he just has a real caring heart and willing to help people," said Julie Romero, Day Center Manager at Senior Support Services.In this season of giving, McCarthy knows it's about the joy that comes with making someone's day a little brighter. This time it was on-camera for all to see.The briefing room exchange came two days after Hill went on a tweetstorm about Trump.Hill has been vociferously critical of the president all year long, but she went further this time, calling Trump a "bigot," a "threat" and "the most ignorant, offensive president of my lifetime."The tweet that garnered the most reaction said: "Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists."Hill, an African American woman, followed up with this: "His rise is a direct result of white supremacy. (KGTV) - Sheriff's Deputies are on the lookout for the man who jumped out of the bushes and confronted an Encinitas man with a rifle. The attack happened Friday morning on Fortuna Ranch Road when the victim was in his driveway. A neighbor tells 10News the man popped out of the bushes wearing a ski mask and camouflage clothing. He then pointed a rifle at the victim, threatening to rob or shoot him.  Deputies say, somehow, the victim was able to run to his neighbor's home and call 911. The gunman got away before law enforcement arrived, but it's unclear if he ran or drove away. With the gunman still at large, some neighbors are concerned for their safety. Crime Stoppers is offering a ,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. Experts say the United States is going through a maternity and child health crisis.“We know that every 12 hours, around the clock, a mother dies as a consequence of childbirth, and if you are a Black woman, those numbers are three-fold higher,” said Dr. Rahul Gupta, Chief Medical and Health Officer at the March of Dimes. “If you're an American Alaskan woman, its two and a half times higher.”The March of Dimes is highlighting the areas of the country that are considered maternity care deserts, meaning places where there are no hospitals providing obstetric care.They say a third of counties are affected and it’s not just a rural American problem. It’s urban counties too.Dr. Rahul Gupta touched on some of the consequences, such as mothers dying unnecessarily, 22,000 infants dying before their first birthday, and the pre-term birth rate rising for a fifth year in a row.The numbers and problems are amplified in maternity care deserts, which have a higher poverty rate and lower household income. That’s something that's escalated during the pandemic.“The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the underlying challenges as well as ugliness within our systems of care as well as communities in terms of institutional racism and bias as well as the socioeconomic conditions that lead to some of these outcomes,” said Gupta.A report touches on many different policy-based solutions that could improve access to maternity care, including expanding access to Medicaid for new moms from 60 days to 1 year after childbirth, allowing better access to midwives, reimbursement for doula care, and expansion of telehealth services. 1629

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — Escondido Fire Department is working to identify potential patients who came into contact with a firefighter paramedic who has tested positive for coronavirus.Escondido Fire Department says it learned Sunday of a firefighter paramedic who tested positive for COVID-19. Several days earlier, the employee was in contact with other people who later tested positive as well, the department said.The firefighter had recently been at work but was asymptomatic at the time. The department is notifying all patients that may have been in contact with the employee.EFD says the firefighter is currently at home under quarantine and has very mild symptoms.Other EFD staff who were in contact with the firefighter at work have shown no symptoms, tested negative for COVID-19, and are being quarantined and monitored in accordance with CDC procedures."The health and safety of our community remains our highest priority.
