SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's one of San Diego's crown jewels. The Hotel Del Coronado has been a landmark of America's Finest City since 1888.While its walls are steeped in history, recently, rumors swirled that a face-changing paint job to the hotel's lobby was coming.Facebook users on the "Coronado Happenings" page voiced worries that the iconic hotel planned to paint its wood-finished lobby white.Do you have a fact or fiction question? Submit your question to 10News here. Those rumors, however, are just that, according to the hotel.Hotel Del Coronado's Public Relations Director Sara Baumann told 10News there were discussions of possible upgrades to retail shops on the hotel's lower level, but nothing regarding painting planned for the lobby. Nothing has been set in stone for any upgrades in any space, as well, Baumann added.Could that change even be made to a National Historic Landmark? According to the National Parks Service, "property owners are free to make whatever changes they wish if Federal funding, licensing, or permits are not involved." 1086

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — King tides are expected to hit San Diego County's coastline starting this weekend. The high tide event is forecasted to begin Sunday, Nov. 15, and last through Monday, Nov. 16, according to the California King Tides Project. Another round of king tides is also expected next month from Dec. 13 through Dec. 15.High tide is set to steadily rise through the weekend, with Friday's high tide reaching 6.9 feet ahead of Saturday's 7.3-foot high tide. Sunday and Monday will see high tide reach 7.5 feet, before gradually decreasing through the remainder of the week, according to Tide Forecast.FORECAST: Latest 10News weather forecast for San Diego County"King tide" is the term used to refer to the natural occurrence of higher than normal tide caused by the alignment of the gravitational pull between the sun, moon, and Earth. While the tide event isn't an everyday occurrence, it is a natural one.According to the California King Tides Project, king tides are generally the highest tides of the year. The group says that understanding king tides help plan for higher sea levels in the future, though the event is not caused by a rise in sea levels."King Tides are the highest high tides of the year, about a foot or two higher than average tides, which corresponds to the one to two foot rise in sea level expected during the next few decades. When you observe the King Tides, imagine seeing these tides (and the associated flooded streets, beaches, and wetlands) almost daily," according to the group. While the event has the ability to produce lively imagery of tide crashing onshore, beach-goers are warned to be careful when near the shoreline, especially if they're near an area prone to erosion. Coastal flooding, affecting businesses and residences, can also occur during these high tide events. 1827

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than two weeks before Halloween, people across the county are getting creative and building candy chutes in hopes of a safer version of door-to-door trick-or-treating.In the yard of the Witthoft home in Lakeside, a large display stands in testament to a four-decade old family tradition of Halloween fright."We love Halloween. It's a fun holiday, a scary holiday. Seeing people dressed up. It's a lot of fun," said Chris Witthoft.Witthoft says part of that fun is handing out candy. That tradition, like so many things this year, is wrapped in uncertainty because of the pandemic."We've done it for so long. Just don't want to let the kids down," said Witthoft. So Witthoft and her family decided to build their own solution: two candy chutes created from PVC pipes and then painted. Witthoft and other family members will push the candy down the chute, staying six feet from the kids."All of us will have gloves and masks on, with social distancing circles along our fence," said Witthoft.Witthoft says the line to get to the candy will be socially distanced, while the chute and nearby areas will be constantly wiped down.To the west, in Rolando Village, Amberosia Vivar has designs on her own candy slide."Will make it out of PVC pipe ... It brings a little excitement for families stuck inside for months. I know my kids have been looking forward to Halloween for months," said Vivar.Across social media, ABC 10news has seen countless examples of San Diegans creating similar candy chutes, but is it safe? County guidelines recommend against any door-to-door trick-or-treating, a chief concern is kids congregating to get the candy. That 'congregating' is also a potential issue with the candy chutes. It's something the Witthofts and Vivar say they'll be watching out for."We can remind the kids, remind the families, maintain your distance," said Vivar."We want to be as safe as possible but still want to carry on our tradition for the kids," said Witthoft. 1995

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Longtime San Diego State football coach Rocky Long is stepping down after nine seasons.San Diego State officials announced Wednesday that Long will be replaced by Aztecs defensive line coach Brady Hoke.Hoke was SDSU's head coach in 2009 and 2010 before leaving to become head coach at Michigan. Long served as defensive coordinator under Hoke and replaced him when he left in 2010.RELATED: San Diego State basketball reaches top ten in polls for first time since 2014During his nine seasons as head coach, Long lead the team to a 81-38 record, three Mountain West Conference championships, and four 10-win seasons since 2015. Combined with previous head coach positions, he is 146-107 in his career."It's time. It's time," Long said. "I love coaching but I don't necessarily love all the things head coaches do."Long said it's time for a "new face" and "new voice.""It doesn't mean the message will be different it just means it will be presented in a different way ... as you grow older you know when it's time," Long said.RELATED: San Diego State's stadium effort gets -million donationLong never saw a losing season at the helm in San Diego, his team's best performances coming in 2015 and 2016 with back-to-back 11-3 records. He was named Mountain West Conference coach of the year in 2012 and 2015 and led SDSU to a bowl appearance all nine years, with four bowl wins.SDSU's most recent season saw the team end with a 10-3 record and dominant 48-11 win over Central Michigan University in the New Mexico Bowl.Since taking over as head coach, Long has led San Diego to rank 11th in rush defense and interceptions, 14th in total defense, 20th in scoring defense, 22nd in turnovers caused, and 26h in defensive pass efficiency, according to the school. It's unclear what Long intends to do next, but sources tell ESPN he spoke with Syracuse about a defensive coordinator position recently and intends to keep working. To that point, Long remained coy on those rumors, saying only that he's been contacted by programs and "as of this moment I'm retired. That doesn't mean I'm not going to listen to what they have to say.""I was smart enough to listen. And a couple of those places I visited," Long said. "I mentioned it before, I'm tired of being head coach but I love coaching."RELATED: Holiday Bowl kicks off amid uncertain futureHoke posted a 13-12 record during his first two seasons with San Diego, going 4-8 in his first year and turning the program around to a 9-4 record and Poinsettia Bowl win the next season. As head coach at Ball State, SDSU, Michigan, and Tennessee, he's recorded an overall record of 78-72. "When Brady decided to come back I told everybody he's the best defensive line coach around," Long said of his replacement. "He's a great guy and a great head coach."Hoke thanked Long and the program officials that looked to bring him back into the Aztec fold."It's great to be back," Hoke told reporters Wednesday. "You never get to do something twice that you really want to do in life ... I can assure you, we are going to keep going in the direction that we're going."Hoke said he'll next be looking at how he'll put together his coaching staff, saying "I think the guys here are a privilege to work with and are good men."In his time away from San Diego State, Hoke says he plans to continue the trends and successes already in place."I think philosophically, that hasn't changed much," Hoke said. "You always grow, if not, you won't get to where you want to go." 3521
