On Friday morning, a truck pulled up outside Heim Elementary School in Williamsville to collect boxes full of shoes for the Nicaragua Mission Project.The project has been collecting supplies for people in Nicaragua for more than a decade. Based in East Amherst, it works with volunteers from local schools and churches to fill boxes with donations and send them from New York to Nicaragua.Heim Elementary School has been working with the project for years, and one fourth grader has been a part of the project for most of his life. Luke Avery started collecting shoes in kindergarten. He even goes to other schools and daycares to pick up donations. Luke has collected more than 3,000 pairs of shoes over the years. He was there again Friday morning to donate more."I feel like other kids can go for school because of kids at my school," Luke said."This is not from me, this is from other children," the project's organizer, Ann Marie Zon said. "And they always feel another kid feeling for them is more special than that shoes. OMAHA, Neb. — Authorities in Omaha say two people died and two others are in critical condition after a home explosion and subsequent fire early Tuesday morning.Following the deadly explosion, it was discovered that the homeowner, 74-year-old Theresa Toledo, had filed a petition for a domestic abuse protection order against 27-year-old Alexander Toledo, stating her relationship as his grandmother. Theresa and her daughter, Angela Toledo, both died in the fire that broke out in the 4800 block of South 51st Street. A dog also was found dead at the scene. According to the Omaha World Herald, Alexander and another person who lived in the home suffered critical injuries.Theresa wrote in the petition, "Alex is on meth, mushrooms that I'm aware of, I haven't been able to see my grandchildren since summer because they are afraid of him as he talks to himself and says his stepfather is in his head, which is not true...he has put holes in the basement walls where he stays and you can't even walk in the basement. He has electronics in the walls & ceiling. I'm afraid he will start my house on fire."Toledo also described her grandson's alleged criminal history with narcotics. She concluded the petition by writing, "I need Alex out of my house now before he destroys my house or harms me, the drugs make him crazy."According to Omaha Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Fitzpatrick, crews arrived on the scene at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, with a second alarm called at 8:23 a.m. The entire block was initially evacuated before authorities determined there was no threat to other residents.The house that exploded is a complete loss and was leveled in the explosion. Some surrounding homes have extensive damage.Neighbors described the scene as horrifying and said it sounded like a bomb went off. "I heard a very loud explosion. It sounded almost like something was bombed and I flew out of the house thinking it was my house and when I got outside I could see the house was on fire and someone was running down the hill and saying to call 911," said Marianne Distefano, a neighbor. When fire rescue arrived at the scene, the house was engulfed in flames. "It was horrible. I mean it was just in flames and after that, smoke, but you could see it was bad. It looked like someone had bombed the house," Distefano said. Distefano saw one neighbor jump to action. Jeff Mell ran towards the flames when he saw what was happening. "I heard something fall, it sounded like something fell on our house, I thought it was a tree or whatever so I came out front angry and I looked down the street and saw flames coming and I automatically just started running," Mell said. He and another neighbor wrapped a man in blankets and helped him to a safer area. Fire investigators are probing the cause of the explosion. "There are so many variables to tell right now, that’s why we have to investigate and kind of piece it together to see exactly what it was that made that house explode. As you can see, the explosion was pretty big," said Fitzpatrick. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A family of out-of-state vacationers was displaced after a dryer in the home they were renting caught fire.Firefighters were called to the home, located on the 1000 block of South Pacific Street, shortly after midnight Sunday.After arriving, firefighters discovered that a clothes dryer near a downstairs bedroom of the home was on fire.Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, but not before a woman in her 60s suffered smoke inhalation.Crews say seven adults and none children staying in the two-unit home were displaced by the fire.Firefighters from Camp Pendleton, Vista and Carlsbad assisted. OLATHE, Kan. — A group of Kansas students is working to lower suspension rates in school by lowering the suspension on cars. And the teens have now teamed up with local police to make it happen.Adrian Vilches, also known as "Shorty," sat down with KSHB to discuss a tall task. His mom was even in a state of shock over this. "Honestly she started crying. She didn't believe I would make it to work with cops in this kind of way," Vilches said.Vilches and several other teens expressed excitement over a new partnership with the Olathe Police Department. Erik Erazo is the brainchild behind this club. He currently serves as the migrant director and Hispanic student advisor for the Olathe School District. “We started a club in 2016 with a few lowrider bikes we were building,” Erazo said.Erazo said that’s how the Olathe Lowrider Bike Club got off the ground. “Lowriding, as far as a lot of people are concerned, it’s a car, it’s hydraulics, it’s paint, it’s murals and it is all of that," Erazo said. "But lowriding to us is a lifestyle. It’s kind of our Chicano way of living, Hispanic-American way.”The students spend a few hours a day every week turning bikes into something much more. They did such a good job “tricking out” the bikes, the Olathe Police Department got in on the fun. The department donated an old squad car to be converted into a lowrider. “It’s gonna have all the bells and whistles,” said Sgt. Logan Bonney.  “And we’re gonna give them [the students] the ability to make it their own.”Vilches agrees that the program offers so much for the students. “If I didn’t have the program, I’d probably be doing something dumb right now. Probably in the back of a police car, but now this is what keeps me moving forward," said Vilches.Christian Gutierrez is another student who sees the many benefits of the program. In addition to learning about cars, he’s also building a relationship with police he never imagined possible. “We’re trying to change that relationship," said Gutierrez. "The black and brown side have always had a bad relationship with police and we’re trying to change that”The teens have placed their work on display at car and bike shows across the Kansas City metro area. They eventually want to help and donate to other kids in need. Perhaps what’s most impressive is that every high school senior in the program last year graduated and is now in college. “I did not ever believe in a thousand years I’d be working with cops or anything,” said Vilches. "And now look at us here. We’re working together, making a better community.” It’s a program the Olathe Police Department wants to continue for several years. “It’s a way for us to really get out to the community in a different way,” said Bonney.  “You don’t build relationships during a crisis. You build it beforehand.”Materials used for the Lowrider Club are funded by donations via the Olathe Police Foundation. If you’d like to help out, click here. 3104
