Hurricane Maria was upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane on Monday, with top sustained winds of 160 MPH. As the hurricane continues to churn in the Atlantic Ocean, it is expected to strike Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The hurricane could prove to be a disastrous blow to more than 3 million Americans in Puerto Rico. Because of the threat posed to the US territory, Puerto Rico was placed under a hurricane warning by the National Hurricane Center.Earlier on Monday, forecasters predicted Maria's rapid intensification. "Significant strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Maria is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane before it moves through the Leeward Islands," according to the National Hurricane Center's latest update. Maria has prompted a hurricane warning for Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat. As of early Monday evening, the storm was passing over Dominica. Torrential rainfall could cause deadly flash flooding and mudslides on islands that it crosses. Maria could dump 6 to 12 inches of rain across the Leeward Islands -- including Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands -- through Wednesday night."We want to alert the people of Puerto Rico that this is not an event like we've ever seen before," Gov. Ricardo Rosselló told reporters Monday. And for the first time in 85 years, Puerto Rico is expected to suffer a direct landfall from a Category 4 or 5 hurricane. Puerto Rico's governor has declared a state of emergency ahead of that landfall, which will likely happen Wednesday."It's time to wrap up your preparations now, Puerto Rico," CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said. 1719
If you’re going to a firework show for Fourth of July, there will be more than one reason to look up to the sky.A penumbral lunar eclipse will occur during the evening hours on Saturday, which will be visible throughout the continental United States.A penumbral eclipse means that some, but not all, of the moon will be partially in Earth’s shadow. Despite the lunar eclipse occurring during a full moon, the moon will appear to be slightly darker during the peak of the eclipse. At its peak, more than one-third of the moon will be in parts of Earth’s shadow.Saturday's eclipse differs from total and partial lunar eclipses as the Earth will not completely block the sun’s light from reaching the moon. The next total lunar eclipse visible from America will not occur until 2022. 787

In an industry like cosmetology, where all services revolve around hair, skin and nails, getting up close and personal to people is a big part of the job.For those looking to make a career in the beauty business, the pandemic is taking a toll. “I had 84 students pre-COVID,” said Donna Kramer, executive director at Empire Beauty School. “I have 72 right now.”Kramer says COVID-19 initially caused the campus to close. It’s recently reopened with new restrictions set by the local health department. Class sizes are smaller, fewer clients can come in due to social distancing and all students have to wear masks. The area that’s taken the biggest hit, however, is attendance.“It’s kind of toying with people’s personal lives,” Kramer said. “We’ve had students that have had to miss a lot of school because of daycare issues. We’ve had students that have had to actually stay away temporarily because their spouses.”According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of hairstylists and cosmetologists is projected to drop by 1% by the end of the decade, which is leaving many students concerned that their career opportunities might be going down the drain.“I know a lot of students kind of have that fear of not being able to find a job now with COVID,” said Alexis Lovato, a cosmetology student at Empire Beauty School.Lovato says many of her classmates are concerned about their employment options once their training is complete.“I think a lot of its just worried about being placed and what’s going to be available for them after their graduation,” she said.Kramer says despite the challenges, students are still getting their hours in and while hands-on training may be a little different, it’s a style they can adapt to.“This industry is going to really flourish once we can get through this,” she said. 1826
