There's a sadness. These are gifts I wanted my wife to have because she deserves them," said Ward. The total loss: more than ,000 dollars.RELATED: Escondido police ask for public's help in finding woman, group in jewelry theftsWard was left wondering, "What if?" His dog had passed several weeks earlier. That same day, Ward had taken measurements to have the door blocked off. Instead, it was open. He believes a professional burglar entered and left through the same doggie door while toting his wife's jewelry."He knew what he was doing. Any exterior door, the alarm would have gone off. Gavin Newsom ordered thousands more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego, state health authorities reported a new high for coronavirus-related deaths and cases.California recorded 53,711 new COVID-19 cases and 293 additional deaths on Wednesday. "That should be sobering. I don't want ... to scare folks, but this is a deadly disease. And we need to be mindful of where we are in this current journey together to the vaccine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - — San Diegans are not allowing the pandemic to dampen their holiday spirit. This much was apparent at the beginning of Taste of December Nights.Within moments of its opening Friday, a line of cars streamed down Park Boulevard, waiting for a chance to order food from about a dozen vendors lined up at Inspiration Point in Balboa Park. "We've been going to December nights every year, but we didn't want to miss it this year," said Jasper Pascual, of National City, who came with his girlfriend Wendee. "It's something new, something interesting."The pandemic has upended decades of tradition, including December Nights in Balboa Park. Thousands normally pack the event in Balboa Park, enjoying holiday decorations, museums and food. This year, the event is a drive through for food vendors, with participants required to stay in their cars and wear masks. Pedestrians, bicyclists and scooter riders are not allowed. "This event obviously is re-imagined, it's different, but again I think it's the type of event that I think is just what some folks will need," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said as he kicked off the event. San Diegans appeared to agree, waiting in stop-and-go traffic to get into one of two ordering lines. A worker from one of the eateries comes to the window, takes an order, and eventually brings the food. Options included coffee, mini donuts, Cajun and kettle corn."Just tell people be super, super patient, bring some music, relax, have fun, enjoy it, because it's going to be a while," said Hellen Silva, who came with her husband and mother. The event runs 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Sunday. Santa will be in attendance each day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 1696

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The University of California Board of Regents announced Wednesday that it will ease admissions requirements for students applying to its nine campuses, including UC San Diego, during the coronavirus pandemic. The board voted Tuesday to suspend using SAT scores and letter grade requirements for A-G courses completed within the 2020 school year for all students who apply."We want to help alleviate the tremendous disruption and anxiety that is already overwhelming prospective students due to COVID-19," said John Perez, chair of the UC Board of Regents. "By removing artificial barriers and decreasing stressors ... for this unprecedented moment in time, we hope there will be less worry for our future students."RELATED: San Diego Unified School District to begin online instruction in AprilAdditionally, the Board of Regents suspended standardized test requirements for students applying for fall 2021 freshman admission. For transfer students, the cap on the number of transferable units with pass/no pass grading applied toward the minimum 60 semester/90 quarter units required for junior standing will be temporarily suspended."The COVID-19 outbreak is a disaster of historic proportions disrupting every aspect of our lives, including education for high school students, among others," said UC President Janet Napolitano, who endorsed the changes. "The university's flexibility at this crucial time will ensure prospective students aiming for UC get a full and fair shot, no matter their current challenges."RELATED: San Diego County school districts providing free meals to students amid closuresThe nonprofit College Board, which administers Advanced Placement testing, recently announced changes to its testing system, but the board said UC will honor credit for 2020 AP exams completed with scores of 3, 4 or 5, consistent with previous years.Students will not be punished for missing transcript deadlines during this time.Final transcripts are due by July 1, but if schools are unable or unsure about their ability to issue transcripts by that date, they may notify the UC at AskUC@ucop.edu with a date of when they may be available.More information on the changes can be found at https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/response-covid-19.html. 2286
