SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Metropolitan Transit System officials say ridership spiked in the first quarter of the 2020 fiscal year by more than a million trips compared to the same time last year.From July through September of 2019, 22,258,345 trips were taken on an MTS trolley or bus. In 2018, MTS saw 21,313,801 trips. It's a 4.4% rise from one year to the next."It's encouraging," says MTS Chair Nathan Fletcher.MTS officials say a heavy focus on investment over the past few years is starting to pay off. They recently completed a million plan to streamline services and add frequency to many bus routes. They also added the South Bay Rapid route from Otay Mesa to Downtown and expanded the Rapid Superloop service in the University City area."As we add those services where folks want them, as we squeeze every dime we can get out of our existing budget, as we make a full commitment to engage the community in what they want, people will use it," says Fletcher.The surge in riders helps MTS buck a nationwide trend where public transportation is on the decline.Even in San Diego, year-to-year numbers had been dropping for four straight years, since hitting a record high in 2015 (see chart above).Fletcher says it's a positive step as the city tries to meet strict climate goals that require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.Recently, SANDAG put out a plan to increase transit ridership to 10%. That sparked a debate over how much money should go towards transit vs. road construction.Fletcher says any money spent on transit also benefits drivers."Every person who chooses transit is one less car driving," he says. "The individual who says, 'I'm always gonna drive,' should support transit because that means less congestion. Less congestion means less toxic pollution and less greenhouse gas emissions. So it's a win for everybody whether you use transit or drive your car."To raise money for more expansion, MTS is looking into a ballot measure for the November 2020 election that would add a half-cent sales tax. 2046

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Restrictions in California due to the COVID-19 pandemic have forced many youth sports teams around San Diego County to head to other states to play games.Under current pandemic-related guidelines, youth sports teams in California have been limited to practices only. The restrictions have been frustrating for many parents and coaches.Anthony Lococo, a coach for San Diego travel baseball organization King Kong Baseball, said, "At this point, we thought we would be in a position where there would be a plan in place to get us back to playing. If I told you five or six months ago that we'd have to travel to play, I would have told you no way. I thought we would have had a plan in place by now."Rene Miramontes, director of coaching for local-based Crusaders Soccer, feels traveling to play in other states was bound to happen."In youth sports in particular, with no recourse, you have to start looking for options,” Miramontes said.Those options include heading east to places like Yuma, Arizona. In fact, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported about a recent baseball tournament in Yuma which featured 51 teams. Of those teams, 49 were from California."I gave it a couple months, with the plan that if we weren't open by October or November, we would have to look into going to other states," said Lococo.Since pandemic regulations went into effect in March, many youth tournaments in San Diego have been canceled, costing the city a lot of money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police arrested Tuesday a man wanted on a warrant in Arizona after a short standoff in Golden Hill. Officers said someone called in an anonymous tip to report the 25-year-old man, wanted for a stabbing, was at the home at 3363 A St. When police went to the home, the man opened the door but shut it when he saw officers. Police called a SWAT team to the scene, and the San Diego Unified School District put nearby Golden Hill K-8 school on lockdown. The man surrendered after about one hour and the lockdown was lifted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Restitution payments were sent this week to the victim of an investor who stole .5 million, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said Friday in a news release. Shawn Heffernan of the Heffernan Group took the investments of 15 people “who were susceptible to fraud due to inattention or advanced age,” the DA’s office said. Heffernan spent the money on personal items, including a lavish wedding and a Maserati. In 2018, Heffernan pleaded guilty to 29 criminal counts including elder fraud, grand theft, forgery, and making a fraudulent tax return. He sentenced to nine years in prison. The judge ordered Heffernan to repay the victims, 0,000 of which has been secured, the DA’s office reported.
