SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whitney Climenson noticed something at her recent shift at a Carslabd restaurant. It wasn’t nearly as crowded, and there were only three people on the clock - about half the normal level. She's instead spending most of her time trying to get through to the Employment Development Department, and figure out why weeks of her jobless benefits are still unpaid. “I would wait for hours on hold if it meant talking to somebody, but they just say ‘Oh, we can't take your call at this time,” Climenson said. Climenson's one of more than 200,000 San Diego County workers who lost their jobs in March and April amid the coronavirus pandemic - a number that many economists expected to grow in May. “Here in San Diego a bigger portion of our economy is in food and drinking establishment employment, and so what we would see then is a big rebound in that area as well locally,” said Alan Gin, economist at the University of San Diego. The hiring - already picking up locally. Andrew Feghali just opened Dave’s Hot Chicken in Pacific Beach. He’s hosting a job fair Monday with at least 10 openings. “We start above minimum wage, so we want to make sure we get the best and the brightest, and another perk is that you get free food,” Feghali said. But like many restaurants, Dave’s is not opening for in-house dining - that means while hiring is picking up, many restaurant jobs won't come back for a while - if at all. 1435

He concluded the event with a speech, saying that those guilty of child sex abuse are "tools of Satan."While many thought the Pope's "all-out-battle" to fight sex abuse was refreshing, local survivors hoped to see more. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There will not be a new pledge class this year for one fraternity at San Diego State University.Phi Kappa Theta had its charter revoked by its national organization on Nov. 6.According to Phi Kappa Theta National, recent actions by members of the CA Phi Iota Chapter caused the chapter to be placed on suspension by both SDSU and the fraternity earlier this fall."This unanimous decision was difficult yet necessary," Fraternity President Adrian Gonzalez said. "Our intention is to use this process as a means to continue our Board’s long-term vision of supporting chapters aligned with our mission, vision, and values.”The fraternity said the SDSU’s chapter’s culture no longer aligned with the fraternity. SDSU officials said Phi Kap was initially put on suspension in January of this year and advised the fraternity that any further incident would result in their removal.“Allegations of violation of the alcohol policy by the fraternity were reported in September, which necessitated the further action,” SDSU media relations officer Cory Marshall said.Phi Kappa Theta’s expulsion at SDSU is in effect for seven years. 1159

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men convicted of leading a home-invasion robbery spree with five other people were sentenced to prison terms Friday.A judge sentenced 26-year-old Thomas James Smith to 85 years plus 50 years to life in prison and 22-year-old Aaron Rico III to 35 years plus 25 years to life in prison for their roles the series of violent break-ins.Smith and Rico were convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault in June. The violent crime spree began on January 23. The series of crimes included breaking into homes, tying up and assaulting homeowners, and in one case, sexually assaulting a woman. RELATED: 680
