LOS ANGELES (AP) — California environmental officials say a popular agricultural pesticide they say has been linked to brain damage in children will be banned after next year under an agreement reached with its manufacturer.Under the deal announced Wednesday, all California sales of chlorpyrifos will end on Feb. 6, 2020.Farmers will have until the end of 2020 to exhaust their supplies.The pesticide is used on numerous crops in the nation's largest agriculture-producing state, including alfalfa, almonds, citrus, cotton, grapes and walnuts.State regulators say the pesticide has been linked to health defects in children, including brain impairment.Officials say they are budgeting million to help manufacturers develop a safer alternative.The pesticide's manufacturer, Corteva Agriscience, says it reached the agreement "in the best interests of the affected growers." 884

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California panel has recommended parole for Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, who has spent nearly five decades in prison. The recommendation was made Thursday, although Gov. Gavin Newsom could decide to deny it. Newsom blocked her release once previously, saying she is still a threat at age 70. Newsom's predecessor, Jerry Brown, blocked Van Houten's parole recommendation twice. Brown has said in the past that she has not taken full responsibility for her actions and remains dangerous.Van Houten is serving a life sentence for helping Manson and others kill Los Angeles grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, in August 1969. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An autopsy could be conducted as early as Monday on award-winning former USC offensive lineman Max Tuerk, who died while hiking with his parents on a favorite trail in the Cleveland National Forest. He was 26.Tuerk was pronounced dead at 3:14 p.m. Saturday at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, according to Supervising Deputy Orange County Coroner Erica Arellano. There was no immediate indication of an apparent cause of death, Arellano said.Tuerk was the first-team All-Pac-12 center as a junior in 2014. He started the first five games at center in 2015, then tore ligaments in his right knee and underwent season-ending surgery. Despite the injury, he won USC's Most Inspirational Player Award.Tuerk was a captain both of his final two seasons with the Trojans.Tuerk started USC's final five regular-season games at left tackle as a freshman in 2012 and at left guard in its 21-7 loss to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl.Tuerk started 13 games at left guard and one at right tackle in 2013, receiving All-Pac-12 honorable mention."Heartbroken by the loss of Max Tuerk," Trojans coach Clay Helton tweeted.
