CLEVELAND — Three suspects were arrested after an officer was shot and killed in Cleveland's Stockyard neighborhood Thursday evening. The unidentified suspects was arrested Friday morning. The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. in the 3200 block of West 65th Street near Storer Avenue, police said. The officer, later identified as Det. James Skernivitz, was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center where he died from his injuries, according to the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association.Police said another person was confirmed dead on the scene but was not a suspect.Skernivitz's identity was held pending the notification of his family, as he is married with children, police said.Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association said Skernivitz has been on the force for "a while," was "well-liked" and was a "good man.""This one hurts," Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association president Jeff Follmer said.Skernivitz was a 25-year veteran of the Cleveland Division of Police, authorities said."We definitely need the prayers of the people in the city. This officer was out doing what all police officers do — trying to protect the people the city — and he gave his life, so we ask that you kind of give his family a little room," Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said.Special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Columbus responded to the scene to assist police. This story was originally published by Camryn Justice on WEWS in Cleveland. 1482

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man's peaceful visit to Coronado's Dog Beach turned into one of major concern when he saw boat debris lining the shore.Todd Tremelling feared the dogs and marine life would eat the materials. Tremelling was at Dog Beach over the weekend when he saw a boat stuck along the fence that separates the public part of the beach from Naval Air Station North Island. The boat is one of about a dozen abandoned boats that have washed ashore due to storms. On Saturday, he saw a crew from the base removing the boat with a backhoe."They were using the bucket to beat it into a million pieces, or probably 10 million," said Tremelling, who regularly takes his two dogs to the beach. When he returned on Sunday, he saw the shoreline was lined with boat debris, including wood paneling, fiber glass, and foam that lined the hull. Tremelling filled a bucket with the debris before an animal could eat it. "They need to do a better job," said Tremelling, of the removal. Sandy Duchac, a spokeswoman for Naval Air Station North Island, said crews follow strict procedures when removing the boats. "At the end of the day we do everything we can to remove the debris from the boats that people allow to come ashore," she said. "There's very little we can do about teh debris that ends up on the Coronado side."Duchac said the Navy has removed about a dozen boats that washed ashore after storms in the last year. It's almost impossible to identify the owners because the boats are often abandoned and the ownership information has been removed. It costs taxpayers about ,000 to remove each boat.  1646

CINCINNATI, Ohio — A settlement has been reached after a police officer used a Taser on an 11-year-old girl while working an off-duty detail at a Kroger in Southwest Ohio. The City of Cincinnati and Kroger have agreed to pay the family of Donesha Gowdy 0,000 to settle the claim of excessive force, according to a news release from family attorney Al Gerhardstein.Donesha had been shoplifting from the Kroger on Aug. 6 when Officer Kevin Brown, who was on security duty, ordered her to stop. She didn't. The officer fired his Taser as she walked away. One probe struck her at the base of her spine; the other hit between her shoulder blades. The incident prompted an apology from Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley and a promise from Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman to review Cincinnati Police Department’s protocol on Tasers.Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot K. Isaac promised “a very thorough review” of Brown's actions, as well as the department’s use-of-force policies as they pertain to juvenile suspects. He said he's "extremely concerned when force is used by one of our officers on a child of this age."Smitherman, along with the girl's mother, also say the policy needs to change. The settlement did not include plans to change police department policy, and it must be approved by probate court.Donesha wrote this apology to Kroger: “I Donesha Gowdy is writing this letter to apologize to the Kroger company … to say I’m sorry for stealing from the store in will not do it again.”WCPO television station in Cincinnati has reached out to the City of Cincinnati and Kroger for comment. 1629

COVID-19 cases among younger Americans are on the rise, and while most under 45 who contract the virus will recover without significant complications, the virus is still a concern for anyone who gets it.But despite that concern, some students in Alabama are actively trying to come down with the coronavirus.According to officials in Tuscaloosa — the home of the University of Alabama — college students have been betting to see who can catch the virus first. Officials say that students put money into a pot, and the first one to contract the virus gets to keep the cash.Randy Smith, the Chief for the Tuscaloosa Fire Department, says he uncovered a major health concern involving area students and parties."We thought that was kind of a rumor at first," Smith said. "Not only did the doctors' offices help confirm it, but the state confirmed they also had the same information."Tuscaloosa City Councilmember Sonya McKinstry says it's up to young people to be responsible and avoid contact others if they're sick. She said the students' behavior is only slowing down a return to normalcy and putting the lives of their loved ones at risk."I just think it's senseless. I think it's careless. And it makes me mad as hell that you know we're constantly trying to do everything we can to slow the spread of the virus while they're just having a damn party trying to spread it," McKinstry said. The University of Alabama plans to reopen campus to students for in-person classes this fall. Officials have not said if the students hosting and attending the "coronavirus parties" are enrolled at the capstone.Young people in Alabama wouldn't be the first to hold "coronavirus parties." Earlier this year, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear reported that one his constituents contracted the virus at a similar party. 1807
