Dan King told reporters, "I just want to give perspective on what it's like to be a firefighter and to have cancer. Unfortunately, that's me. Two years ago today. I was in the middle of chemotherapy and radiation; pretty extensive treatment. For me, the treatment was very long and very painful."His remarks were during a news conference about a fund-raiser to upgrade the equipment at Firehouse 21 in Pacific Beach Tuesday.Imagine the health risks — every day."Firefighters can experience a lifetime of environmental exposures in a compressed period of time. It may happen at just one fire or, in many cases, chronic exposure over the course of a long career," Firefighter Kurtis Bennett, part of The Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program, said. To fight that the Pacific Beach Town Council wants to raise ,000 to augment city funding.San Diego City Council leader for District 2, Lorie Zapf, told the crowd, "I wish we had more revenue, more money so we could take care of all these equipment needs."Firehouse 21 would benefit directly. CorePower Yoga has dozens of studios across San Diego. Monday morning, the company sent an email to its staff and clients outlining several precautions. Chloe Delehanti works out at the Mission Valley location."I've lived through SARS and Swine Flu, and I don't remember it being this serious of a concern, certainly never getting emails from my gym, or travel alerts, so it's definitely concerning," said Delehanti. The email stated the company is increasing its cleaning protocols and reducing the use of props and physical contact between teachers and clients. "Obviously, I really like adjustments and having that component in class, but I think it's a good idea to be as safe as possible, considering that it is a really growing concern, and there's a lot of new cases," said Delehanti.A salon in Hillcrest is also changing the way it does business. Stylists at Brightside Barber will now have the option of turning away customers who appear sick. "From here on out, not to feel like you can't turn someone away, if they are visibly sick with a fever, coughing," said Angelic Corona. She's been in the business ten years and said she's never seen anything like this. "I was relieved, cause you know, in customer service, it's kind of always been the customer is always right, but in this scenario it's health and safety for everyone," said Corona. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego has more than 2,300 jobs vacant but is struggling to fill them.The jobs run the gamut from 9-1-1 dispatchers to water utility workers to swimming pool managers to civil engineers. The list of vacant positions came to light after the city Audit Committee discussed struggles with worker retention and recruitment at its meeting this week. "We need to do something about that," Councilman Scott Sherman said. "Change the culture and get it to where employees are really looking forward to going to work and like being where they are."Michael Zucchet, who heads the Municipal Employees Association, says the city is losing workers to other agencies in this county and others because they offer better pay and retirement benefits, such as a pension. He says the problem has gotten worse since the unemployment rate has dropped to a near-historic low 3.5 percent. The city in 2012 switched most new employees to a 401(k) style retirement plan after voters passed Proposition B. That proposition is now in legal limbo after the California Supreme Court said the city skipped a key step in the approval process. "The City of San Diego is hemorrhaging employees to other jurisdictions," Zucchet said. "We have documented people who have been city employees for a long time, have no interest in leaving, but they can't pass up a 20-30 percent pay raise in Chula Vista, Carlsbad, National City and these other places."Zucchet gave examples of current job advertisements showing accountants in Chula Vista making 20 percent more than those in the city of San Diego, senior management analysts in Encinitas earning 38 percent more, associate planners in Poway making 21 percent more, and a police service officer in Coronado makes 27 percent more. A search on the city's hiring website shows 53 jobs, but Zucchet said those positions reflect multiple openings. As of March 1, the city had 2,373 vacant positions, up about 8 percent from a year earlier. The city auditor is now investigating how the city can improve worker retention and recruitment. A July study found the city had an overall 10 percent turnover rate, but that it was 15 percent with millennials, who may be gaining experience at the city before moving on to higher paying positions. 2289
