SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The second phase of the San Diego's styrofoam ban went into effect Friday. Local restaurants are ditching styrofoam for environmentally friendly products. Customers will see more sustainable items made from paper and aluminum. The transition to more sustainable produces also comes with a price. "It's a little more expensive but we understand why we have to do it," said Maggie Rojas from Giorgino's Cheesesteaks in Golden Hill. "Little by little we started the transition, so we didn't wait until the last minute to do it.""We all care about the environment so we want to help out," said Rojas. "It’s a big problem."There are some exceptions to the rules. Grocery stores will be able to use styrofoam trays for packaging raw meat, fish and poultry through 2021. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The upcoming San Diego Blood Bank's blood drive brings those impacted by the donations of others into focus.One of those people brought into focus is Bryan Caraveo. Bryan was hit by a dump truck while riding his bike to work on National Bike to Work Day.Due to the accident, Bryan suffered a traumatic brain injury, collapsed lung, several broken ribs and a broken nose, clavicle and vertebrae.Bryan underwent two surgeries that required several blood transfusions, according to the blood bank.RELATED: San Diego Blood Bank partners with Westfield, ABC10 to host 'The Gift of Health'In describing the first moments he woke up in the hospital and realized what had happened Bryan said, “It was a matter of realizing that I was awake somewhere I didn’t know where I was or how I got there.”Bryan’s life was in part saved thanks to people who donated blood to the San Diego Blood Bank.“It makes me feel great because I know that at some point there were people who donated that helped me,” said Bryan.Bryan now frequents the blood bank to give back to those who gave him back his life.He also shared some advice for those on the fence about making a blood donation. “Take a look at your family and friends that are around you and imagine that in an hour they need blood. Are you willing to give a pint of blood to save their life? If you’re willing to give, you know, your family and friends a pint of blood, what about somebody else?” 1470

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The public’s help is being sought in finding the driver in an Ocean Beach hit-and-run crash that killed a skateboarder.On June 4, at around 10:30 p.m., Cameron Loren was riding his skateboard westbound in the 4500 block of Voltaire Street, in the middle of the road, when he was struck by a westbound vehicle from behind.San Diego police said the driver fled the scene, leaving the 25-year-old Loren on the street with injuries.Emergency crews responded to the incident, but Loren was declared dead at the scene, according to police.A description of the driver was not available, and investigators believe the vehicle that struck Loren was a light-colored sedan that may have a damaged windshield and roofline.Anyone with information on this case, including the location of the driver or the vehicle involved, is urged to contact the SDPD Traffic Division at 858-495-7807 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to ,000 for information that leads to an arrest. 1026

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There is road rash on his forehead and a smile on his face. "Just hangin' in there, man."Julio Vazquez is in a hospital bed at U.C.S.D. Medical Center in Hillcrest, his broken leg in a cast from above the knee to his toes.  "The pain I have is in my right leg.  Once I move it, it's a crazy pain, really bad. My right rib, one is broken and when I raise my voice, it hurts really bad."It was Sunday night about midnight in Ocean Beach. He had pulled over to assist a stranded couple on the shoulder of Sunset Cliffs Blvd.  The Ocean Beach man was trying to help start their white Lexus when another car slammed into them. The impact peeled back the door of the Lexus and propelled Julio into the air, over his own car, and into the ditch.Paramedics were soon on-scene; as his wife and two young children watched.Vazquez was doing a good deed; and paying a price for it.  "Stuff happens. Doesn't make me feel bad. It's just something I do when I see somebody needs help."Now he needs help; could be off work for several months and people are responding.  A GoFundMe page was set up to help offset costs; asking ,000.    "It feels great! Never thought so many people were gonna be helping me: people texting, social media, something surprising."As for the driver who took off, he said,   "If I was in his position, I'd go to the police."Despite the pain and his uncertain future.  "I don't have anger at nobody. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer called on Governor Gavin Newsom to issue guidance that would allow San Diego's hotel industry to resume hosting business meetings and conferences."It's incredibly important for the jobs that this industry represents and the bottom line of dollars to our city," Faulconer said.San Diego tourism officials tell ABC 10News that the industry has lost an estimated billion due to the pandemic thus far. About 22% of out-of-town visitors to San Diego typically come for business meetings or conferences. The loss of this business has led to the loss of more than 50,000 local hospitality jobs.Thursday, Faulconer visited the Manchester Grand Hyatt to review the safety protocols they would put into place for business travelers. That includes plexiglass dividers, hand sanitizing stations, outdoor meeting spaces, and socially distanced seating."Seeing is believing," Faulconer said. "When you can see firsthand the remarkable precautions that our hotel industry has taken, the remarkable job that they have done with leisure travel, we can host business travel safely.”Faulconer points out that California is the only state in the country that bans hotels from hosting businesses.ABC 10News reached out to the California Department of Public Health.
