SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University announced Thursday its selection of Clark Construction Group to design and build a 35,000-seat stadium in Mission Valley. The stadium is part of the SDSU West measure that voters passed in the November mid-term election. The plan also includes a river park, a campus extension and commercial and residential space. The value of the contract is roughly 0 million, according to SDSU.``Clark Construction has significant expertise building large, multi-use stadiums and is a great fit to build San Diego State University's new multi-use stadium and the future home of Aztec Football,'' said SDSU Athletic Director JD Wicker. ``I am confident in their ability to deliver a stadium that meet the needs of the university and the San Diego region.''The Maryland-based company has completed projects in Southern California, most notably Petco Park and the Rose Bowl press box in Pasadena.Clark Construction also designed and built local non-athletic buildings like the Naval hospital at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and SDSU's Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences building.``The full resources of our national organization, combined with our local expertise and relationships will be at the service of the university toachieve the project's vision,'' said Carlos Gonzalez, the company's senior vice president and regional executive officer. ``We recognize the opportunity this project creates for SDSU's Mission Valley campus and for the greater San Diego community.''The SDSU stadium will sit in the footprint of the site's current occupant, SDCCU Stadium. The stadium will serve primarily as the home stadium for the university's football team, but will also accommodate professional and collegiate soccer games, concerts and other events.Clark Construction currently aims to break ground on the project early next year, with the stadium ready for use at the beginning of the 2022 college football season. 1964

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 2,686 new COVID-19 infections -- the 26th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases. On Saturday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Saturday was the 18th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 35 people also were hospitalized, according to Saturday's data, and another two were sent to intensive care units. The county's cumulative cases increased to 142,647 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Nine new community outbreaks were confirmed on Friday. There have been 57 confirmed outbreaks over the past seven days and 221 cases associated with those outbreaks.A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.A complete list of county COVID-19 testing sites, how to make appointments and hours can be found at www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemio logy/dc/2019-nCoV/testing/testing-schedule.html.Though county officials advised residents to avoid holiday gatherings, anyone who participated in a gathering was urged to get tested, as well as people who recently returned from travel, people with any symptoms and people at higher risk for COVID-19, whether or not they display symptoms. In advising against holiday gatherings, San Diego County Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Greg Cox pointed to a massive uptick in cases after Thanksgiving -- including the region's highest daily total coming three weeks after the holiday with 3,611 cases reported last Friday."We cannot ignore the reality that we are in a bad place right now," Cox said. "We're making a special plea to avoid large gatherings with those outside your immediate family. This one time, this one year."If people have already traveled, they should be extra cautious about spreading the virus, Cox said.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, 44.1% of the county's cumulative cases have been reported after Thanksgiving. San Diego County is on pace to report another 600 deaths due to the virus before the end of January, she said."We don't want to see what happened after Thanksgiving happen again," Wooten said. "We must continue to stay apart to get the spread of the virus under control. If we don't, cases, hospitalizations and deaths will continue to soar."The 11-county Southern California region is still reporting zero available ICU beds. Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the regional stay-at-home order he issued for all of Southern California will almost assuredly be extended beyond next week's expiration date.Current stay-at-home orders took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6, and were originally set to end on Monday. Newsom did not give an indication of when a decision on extending the orders will be made or much longer they will remain in place. 2874

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Wednesday gave final approval to a measure to reduce light pollution in two rural communities. The amendment to the county's Light Pollution Chapter ordinance covers the Julian and Borrego Springs Community Planning Areas. Both will now be considered "Zone C" to receive a Dark Sky Community designation, which limits the total amount of light per acre and has more restrictive standards for signage or nighttime sports.During their regular meeting on Oct. 28, supervisors approved the ordinance amendment on first reading, and also found it to be exempt from the state's Environmental Quality Act, as it does not affect land use or density.Taking effect in January, the ordinance will support Julian in becoming an International Dark Sky Community and update Borrego Springs' light pollution standards.According to the county, changes willinclude new lighting standards (for color type, levels and shielding) and sign illumination. The county will give existing developments 10-year grace period to come into compliance.Dark skies are important to astronomers for better viewing in rural communities, along with businesses that benefit from related tourism. San Diego County adopted a light pollution policy in 1985.Public outreach sessions found that residents in Borrego Springs and Julian were supportive of new regulations, according to the presentation to the board.Ordinance enforcement will cost an estimated ,000 in fiscal year 2021-22.The cost for residential property owners to upgrade their lighting ranges between and 0, while a retail store owner might pay between 0 and ,600, according to the county. 1697
