SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thieves hit a well-known business causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. Bill Howe Plumbing, located on Aero Drive, had their work trucks vandalized as thieves steal gas from the gas tanks. Fleet manager Rhett Wheeler says the business has been targeted at least three times in the last month. “Its a shock that someone will crawl underneath a car with a drill, drill a hole in a gas tank, to steal a couple of gallons of gasoline,” says Wheeler. Thieves have damaged at least 10 vehicles, costing the family-owned company around ,000 in damages. “We end up losing a truck for two or three days per occurrence,” says Wheeler. Wheeler is urging everyone, including businesses, to check their vehicles of leaking gas before driving off. The company has reported the incidents to police. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- New SANDAG and San Diego County statistics show an alarming number of San Diegans of color are impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Wednesday, community leaders and elected officials announced the creation of a new regional task force to tackle the root causes of the inequities.The coronavirus did not create society's inequities."But it has definitely exasperated them, and it has highlighted them," San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said.That is why community leaders announced the creation of the new Regional COVID-19 Task Force for Equitable Recovery. They will work with elected officials to tackle the underlying problems that lead to inequities such as job, food, healthcare, and economic losses, felt by many San Diegans of color."You are valued," National City mayor, Alejandra Sotelo Solis, said in the Zoom announcement. "You have made a contribution to our community, and we want you to stay healthy.""The elected officials will then shoulder the obligation to take their recommendations and suggestions and translate them into policies that can be introduced for a vote to make the change real," Fletcher added.A newly released SANDAG report found that when compared to the white population, Black and Hispanic people are more than four times more likely to live in areas that have been impacted both by COVID-19 and unemployment.New San Diego County numbers show that while Hispanics and Latinos make up 34% of the county population, they account for 67% of the county's positive coronavirus cases."Not one community needs the testing, tracing, and treatment," JoAnn Fields with API initiative said. "But it needs to be on an equal level so that we are all protected as a whole community."The task force hopes to close the understanding, trust, access, and resource gap felt by people of color, in a proactive way. San Diego (KGTV)- People in North Park say they’re fed up with rushing water and flood damage from recent water main breaks. There have been at least four major water main breaks, since 2017, in the same area. The latest break over the weekend was located on Myrtle Avenue near Park Villa Drive. Neighbors were left without water for almost eight hours. They tell 10News they have been trying to get the city to fix the lines in the area for years. “In the past 12 years, we’ve had seven… five on my street, two on the side streets,” says neighbor Linda Nelson. Nelson has been living in her North Park home since 1980. She says they’ve had some breaks in the same spots. “What happens is they patch it up and then a year or two later it breaks where they patched it.”The city says the concrete pipe was over 50 years old. They are in the process of replacing all cast iron pipes around the city. Then they will then assess the concrete ones. The city hopes to have all the cast iron pipes removed by 2023. But with a fast-growing community, neighbors feel the infrastructure in areas like North Park should be first on the list. “They want more apartments on the transit lines, which mean North Park,” says Nelson. “If they increase the density and they don’t fix the infrastructure that we have that just puts more pressure on it. Until they can make it right for the folks that lived here for a long time, I don’t think we need any more people.” 1457

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Santa Ana winds are once again sweeping through the county. Fire crews and the city are on high alert after recent brush fires around San Diego. They are urging the community to take action. This comes after flames sparked in a canyon in the Talmadge area last Tuesday. Neighbors had to evacuate as the fire came within 200 feet of homes. “We do know that where that fire started, there was a homeless encampment,” says Fire Chief Colin Stowell. “It’s important for those who see an active encampment to report it.” Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsThe next day crews responded to another brush fire in City Heights. The blaze scorched an acre of land. It’s not uncommon for homes to sit within feet of canyon-like areas. The city says they work to clear the brush in these spaces, but they also face some challenges. “Unfortunately, because of the number of open spaces and what we call the wildland-urban interface properties that but up against open space or canyons, they can only really get out there every three years,” says Stowell. SAN DIEGO,Calif. (KGTV) -- A North San Diego County mother died early Sunday morning and the father of her children has been arrested, authorities said.San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to calls of a possible shooting just after midnight at a home on 25969 Duro Rd. in Valley Center, according to Lt. Chad Boudreau of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.When deputies arrived, they found an adult female suffering from a traumatic injury. The victim was rushed to Palomar Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, said Boudreau.The victim was identified as Mayra Meraz, 31.
