At the time, at least 11 other wildfires were burning in the region.What followed in the hours and days ahead would change San Diego County forever.The fire was reported at 5:37 p.m. on October 25, 2003. Within hours, Santa Ana winds raged from the Cuyamaca Mountains, flames hurled southwest at speeds of up to 6,000 acres an hour.Overnight, it consumed parts of northern Lakeside, killing 12 people and injuring others. Burned over 86 percent of her body, she climbed out screaming for her sister Ashley to follow.Allyson would learn from the hospital bed that her sister never made it out. The origin of the Paradise Fire was later determined to be arson, though the person responsible has never been found.The 2003 firestorms ultimately claimed 15 lives, including a firefighter, and burned almost 2,400 homes.A state fire commission released a scathing report on the overall response. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was shot in San Diego's Shelltown neighborhood Sunday afternoon, San Diego Police confirm.According to San Diego Police, the shooting happened just after noon at the La Michoacana grocery store located at 1702 Vesta Street. The suspect, a man in his 20s, pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the cash register.The owner, a 40-year-old man, opened the register and gave the man money, police said. The suspect went to a second cash register and demanded money. The employee opened the second register and gave the suspect money.As the suspect was turning to leave, the owner pulled out a handgun. The suspect turned to the owner and the owner shot the suspect twice, hitting him in the abdomen and in the wrist, police say.The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, but police said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. 879

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Nearly a week full of films by military veterans, focusing on a variety of topics is coming to San Diego this month.The GI Film Festival runs Sept. 24-29, bringing together a community of passionate filmmakers, the military veteran community, and those who support them to showcase works in cinema and educate and preserve the legacies of veterans.Festival organizers say their mission is to ensure that the stories of military veterans and their families are told and show future generations the triumphs and sacrifices they endure.The festival also works as a bridge, connection military and civilian populations together through cinema and mutual understanding. All of this works as a way to help veterans heals as well.Last year, the six-day film festival opened with a film starring George Takei, about a veteran who spent time in a Japanese-American internment camp, and also featured films by stars like actor Jeffrey Wright. This year, films focusing on the Afghanistan War, short documentaries, post-9/11, the Iraq War, and student and military veteran projects will be screened.Films will be screened at the Museum of Photographic Arts or UltraStar Cinemas at Hazard Center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One man was injured in a stabbing in Spring Valley Sunday evening, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.Deputies said that a man between the ages of 40 and 50 was transported to the hospital after another man stabbed him, and he is expected to survive.The call to the residence near Dale Avenue and S.
