SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Balboa Park is getting some new trees and, in turn, lending itself to a new brew.Friends of Balboa Park planted about 27 new trees in Balboa Park Friday in celebration of Arbor Day. The trees were placed in the grove on Park Blvd. and Morley Field Dr., across from the San Diego Zoo.The trees planted including six different varieties and are all perfect for San Diego's semi-arid climate."Friends is honored to have such strong support from our donors and corporate partners that enables us to continue making meaningful enhancements to the Park," John Bolthouse, Friends of Balboa Park executive director, said. "Balboa Park is already the jewel of San Diego, so being able to add more trees to the lush landscape is a great gift Friends and its supporters are thrilled to give the community."RELATED: San Diego takes part in international City Nature ChallengeThe tree varieties include Agonis flexuosa (peppermint willow), Cinnamomum camphora (camphor tree), Erythrina corralloides (naked coral tree), Ficus macrophylla (moreton bay fig tree), Bauhinia blakeana (Hong Kong orchid tree), and Podocarpus gracilior (fern pine.)In addition to Balboa Park's new trees, some of the park's nature can be found in San Diego craft beer for a limited time.Karl Strauss Brewing and Automatic Brewing have partnered with San Diego Urban Timber to offer their "Urban Arbor IPA." The collaboration is created with juniper sourced from Balboa Park.The unique brew will be offered at all Karl Strauss locations, Blind Lady Ale House, Tiger! SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cinema Makeup School is at San Diego Comic-Con to turn some lucky attendees into zombies with special makeup effects.The Los Angeles-based theatrical makeup school is one of many special effects companies at the convention. 10News' Brooke Sargent volunteered for a complete transformation, becoming a dreaded creature in about 90 minutes as a crowd looked on.Cinema Makeup School has been teaching some of the industry's best artists since 1993. 472

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Boulevard Fitness in University Heights has closed its doors following a letter from the city threatening expensive fines and to force the business to close.The gym stayed open in the face of local coronavirus-related restrictions on indoor activities for fitness centers for more than a month, according to a letter from City Attorney Mara Elliott."To date, evidence we have reviewed shows your business has been out of compliance for more than 45 days. If our office chooses to remedy the violation by pursuing an unfair business practices action, you and your business could be subject to fines of ,500 a day for each violation and orders to close," Elliott's letter on Tuesday stated.RELATED: Businesses to begin outdoor services at San Diego parksIn a letter sent to the gym's members on Wednesday, Boulevard Fitness said it has temporarily closed "due to current fiscal situations.""We are not sure when this closure period will end but we will be [sic] continuously monitor this and update you when appropriate," the gym's letter read. "However, we are working closely with our legal counsel to get in compliance with public health orders so that we can open up again soon."Boulevard Fitness owner Shawn Gilbert told ABC 10News back in July that staying open is a matter of survival."I took a huge financial hit in May. Money out of my pocket that's never coming back. We have bills to pay, we have rent to pay,” Gilbert told ABC 10News. He added that he believed his gym can operate indoors safely with face coverings and distancing, and that he has an outdoor area he plans to utilize.The gym on El Cajon Boulevard had been limiting the number of people inside and increasing cleaning and other measures to try to limit the risk of spreading the virus.RELATED: North Park gym forced to move outside, immediately finds syringeThis month, ABC 10News analyzed data from 211 revealed the gym was among businesses that have received the most complaints from the public about health order violations, with 141 complaints at the time.In a follow-up to ABC 10News, Elliott said the gym was contacted several times by San Diego Police officers and given warnings and citations by the county. This is reportedly the first case of its kind referred to the City Attorney's office."For more than a month, Boulevard Fitness ignored the county's orders to stop endangering the health of its members and the public. My office stepped in and got quick compliance the same way we did with the Banker's Hill party house -- by laying out the fines and penalties we could seek if they continued breaking the law, " Elliott said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Before the sun rose Friday, cars already packed parking lots at San Diego beaches to kick off Labor Day weekend and what's expected to the some of the hottest days of summer.However, San Diego County leaders said no matter where you are this weekend, they want to emphasize people must still follow CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.ABC 10News was at La Jolla Shores on Friday morning as beachgoers wearing masks secured spots far enough to stay socially distanced.Beachgoer and Santee resident Kris Moberly, “We know we can find a spot if we come early."It's the new norm, but also a way to ensure San Diego stays off the state's watchlist after just getting off of it two weeks ago.Moberly said she hopes everyone will follow the rules this weekend, telling ABC 10News, "I'm sure there's people who push the limits but you're responsible for your own health and I think most people are considerate of others."San Diego Lifeguards said they won't be regulating when it comes to social distancing or masks."We're going to be focused on keeping people safe in the water, but social distancing is everyone's responsibility,” a lifeguard told ABC 10News.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the status of our county depends on people's actions this weekend. In a press conference earlier this week, he said people should avoid indoor parties and continue to follow CDC guidelines.To ensure added safety, beaches like Carlsbad will also be handing out masks and teaching visitors about safety guidelines.Lifeguards said in addition to COVID-19 restrictions, the heat will also be a big safety factor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Charles Schwab is the latest large investment firm to offer fractional stocks as a way to get more people to invest.The move puts more high-dollar, blue chip stocks within reach for younger customers."It's a big win to consumers in general," says Steven Fox, the owner of Next Gen Financial Planning. "That's particularly helpful for younger investors because they typically tend to have smaller accounts."A recent report says that 66% of millennials say they're afraid of the stock market. Fox thinks it's because that generation watched their parents go through multiple downturns and were turned off by its volatility.But, Fox says fractional stocks, and other new ideas from large companies are enticing more people to invest. He says many firms are starting to offer perks like zero-commission trades, fractional stocks, and on-line based accounts to help people save money and invest more."It may only be 1%, but for a lot of people over a long period of time, as you account grows more and more, that 1% can mean a difference of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars that you would have available to pull out later in life."Fox says it also helps people keep a more diverse portfolio. He says this is the start of a shift to more direct indexing, where investors will be able to use fractional stocks to create their own groups of investments, rather than buying pre-set mutual funds or indexes."You're gonna see more technology come out that makes it easy to do direct indexing and consumers are going to see more and more options here," says Fox. 1585
