SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 30-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a fire hydrant in a neighborhood north of Scripps Ranch, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 4:20 p.m. on Stonebridge Parkway near Stockwood Cove, off Pomerado Road in the Rancho Encantada neighborhood, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim was riding his 2019 Indian Scout motorcycle between 80-100 mph eastbound on Stonebridge Parkway when he lost control at a curve in the road, jumped the curb and slammed into a fire hydrant, Buttle said.The rider was ejected onto the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene, he said. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Navy dismissed charges Thursday against an officer who had been accused of not reporting war crimes by a Navy SEAL later acquitted of murder in a high-profile case that got the president's attention.The action by the chief of naval operations in the case of Lt. Jacob Portier is the latest blow to military prosecutors and comes a month after a military jury cleared Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher of murder and attempted murder charges.Adm. John Richardson also ordered an investigation into the performance of the Navy's justice system.Portier faced charges of dereliction of duty, destruction of evidence and holding Gallagher's re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse of a teen Islamic State militant the decorated SEAL was accused of stabbing to death after treating the boy's wounds.Gallagher was convicted of a single charge of posing for photos with the 17-year-old militant's corpse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Cold, windy, and rainy conditions have prompted the San Diego Housing Commission to activate inclement weather shelters this New Year’s Eve. The commission activates the Inclement Weather Shelter Program when temperatures drop below 50 degrees, the chance of rain is higher than 40 percent or in the case of sustained high winds. The program is a partnership between the commission, the city of San Diego, Father Joe's and Connections Housing. The commission also funds the program. Father Joe’s Villages tells 10News they can take in an additional 170 people this New Year's Eve, including children.They will convert two dining halls into temporary shelters, filling them with cots. “When you’re out there in the rain and you get wet and then this cold air, you feel a chill in your bones, that’s what those on the streets experience,” said Deacon Jim Vargas, President and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A deer mouse found in Warner Springs tested positive for the potentially deadly hantavirus, San Diego County Vector Control and environmental health officials announced Friday.Vector Control officials said the mouse was found during a routine monitoring operation. Multiple mice collected by Vector Control have tested positive for the virus in areas of north and east county, including Fallbrook, Boulevard, Bonsall, 4S Ranch and Potrero, since January.With each instance, county officials have reminded residents to avoid sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings, which can kick the virus up into the air.Residents are advised to use so-called "wet cleaning" methods like a diluted bleach spray, disinfectants or a sponge and a mop to clean up wild rodent matter like urine, feces and saliva. Cleaned areas should also be well- ventilated as well to ensure the virus does not linger.Hantavirus is not uncommon in San Diego County's more rural and undeveloped areas, but residents can avoid exposure by keeping rodents out of their homes, sheds and garages, according to Vector Control. Wild mice, in particular, are the virus' main carriers.There is no cure or vaccine for hantavirus, which can cause deadly infections. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries he sustained in a stabbing attack in the Egger Highlands area.The victim and a friend were in the 1500 block of Thermal Avenue at 10:30 p.m. Friday when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up next to them and two suspects got out of the back and began fighting with the victim, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspects threw a bottle at the victim and stabbed him in the hip, then jumped back in the vehicle, which was last seen southbound on Thermal Avenue, Heims said.The boy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Heims said.A detailed description of the suspects was not available. 737
