Health authorities in Spain say deaths from the coronavirus have more than doubled in 24 hours, while total infections approached 8,000.The Health Ministry said Spain has recorded 288 deaths since the start of the pandemic, up from 136 on Saturday. FT. MYERS, Fla. — A 40-year investigation into a missing Wisconsin woman ended earlier this week when police arrested a cold case suspect in Ft. Myers, Florida.John Bayerl, 78, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of first degree murder in the disappearance of his wife, Dona Mae Bayerl, who police say was 38 years old when she disappeared.In May of 1979, Bayerl reported his wife missing and told police that she stormed out of their Muskego, Wisconsin home after an argument, never to be seen again. Friends and family insisted Dona Mae Bayerl would never leave her daughters behind, who were four and seven years old at the time.Though Dona Mae Bayerl was declared dead in 1986 and the case eventually ran cold, police say they never closed the investigation, and "officers continued to be assigned to the cold case." Bayerl continued to remain a person of interest as the case was eventually reclassified from a missing person case to a homicide.A warrant for Bayerl's arrest was issued last Friday, February 15, and the Muskego Police Department traveled to Ft. FORT THOMAS, Kentucky — Thirteen-year-old Lilliana Schalck, who died unexpectedly this past weekend, was a flyer, her father said. At just 4-feet-10-inches and 80 pounds, the cheerleader was perfectly suited to being tossed into the air by her teammates, topping their human pyramids and landing safely.“Everybody liked her,” father Dan Schalck said. “She was supportive on the mat. Doing her thing, she was fierce, but when it comes to anyone else, she was very supportive.”Doctors still don’t know exactly what happened to the eighth-grader Saturday. Her father was waiting to watch her perform in a Columbus cheer competition when she told her teammates she had begun to feel sick. Her limbs tingled; she felt weak.Dehydration, Dan thought at first. Maybe anxiety, although she had never struggled with that before. The team called an ambulance, and Lilliana was alert enough on the ride to respond to questions. Doctors ferried her from the ambulance to the emergency room to intensive care. Whatever happened, they couldn’t stop it. Less than two hours after she had begun to feel sick, she was gone.“At one point, the medical staff said, ‘If anyone’s close to her, you need to call them,’” her father said. “And I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. But Monday night, the wound still fresh, he was comforted by the Highland Heights community’s outpouring of love and support for his strong-willed, high-flying daughter.She was a middle school student, but she was talented enough to compete with high schoolers.
