SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- Those stuck at home and going stir crazy many have begun venturing out this summer. Air and car travel have been steadily increasing in recent months and visits to lakefront resorts have been on the rise. But some worry the economic boost in tourism could be short-lived.Located along the shores of Lake Michigan, the resort town of South Haven is a drivable oasis for busy urban dwellers looking for a quick escape like Naperville, Illinois, resident Edward Marcin.“People are friendly. The water here the boats… it’s almost like going to New England in two and a half hours,” says Marcin.Scott Reinert, the executive director of the South Haven, Van Buren County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau says the tourism economy here brings in about million of revenue to the area each year.“Lodging represents a little over 20 percent of the total spend when visitors come in,” he says.But the pandemic shutdown wiped out 10 weeks of business. Revenues for the beachfront community were down 90 percent.“They essentially put us out of business,” says John Marple. He owns the Old Harbor Inn in South Haven.Forced to lay off his entire staff, Marple lost 20% of his gross income.Federal stimulus dollars he says helped him keep from going under.But once the state allowed for reopening in early June, business began booming. It took just days for rooms to sell out completely through July and even into august.“The online reservations just blew up. I had the highest sales month I ever had in June of this year,” says Marple.It’s so busy Marple has removed the inn from travel sites like Expedia and Booking.com.Today, the town is bustling with tourists. The beaches are completely packed. Housekeeping can barely keep up with the enhanced disinfecting process.“Right now, it takes us approximately 45 minutes longer to properly prepare a room for a new guest by doing all the sanitation,” says Marple.Door stickers now indicate when a room has been cleaned and that no one has been inside. But rising COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in many states are changing consumer attitudes towards travel plans.“With so many visitors coming in from in some cases hotspots from around the state or around the Midwest,” says Reinert. “You know, how long can we stay safe?”According to a travel survey conducted this month by Longwoods International, 76% of travelers say the will change their plans because of coronavirus. That’s up from 69% at the beginning of June. And 45% say they will cancel trips completely. That’s up from 37% in June.“The past week for sure we have seen a rash of cancellations,” says Marple.While the current increase in tourism has helped recover some losses, another shut down Marple worries could be devastating to the seasonal businesses here.“I do worry that business may not return like it has in the past. I think this is going to be an issue for quite some time," he said. 2927

(KGTV) - Business leaders in Solana Beach are calling on the city government for more help as they try to recover from the coronavirus pandemic and its ensuing economic fallout.On June 10, the City Council agreed to set aside 0,000 of CARES Act funding to distribute as grant money to businesses with 25 or fewer employees.While business owners 10News spoke to say they're grateful for any help they can get, some feel it's not enough."We have 1,000 to 1,200 small businesses here in the city that would qualify," says Chamber of Commerce Co-President Ron Blumberg. "So, you do the math."City officials haven't decided how they'll divvy up the money, or what businesses will have to do to apply. They also haven't said how many businesses would receive the grants.But if the money is given out equally, or even pro-rated based on size, it would only amount to a few hundred dollars per business. Blumberg says he'd like to see the city combine that money with other business-friendly moves.Blumberg thinks the city could waive permit fees and restrictions to allow all businesses to expand to their sidewalks. He says they could also remove parking restrictions."Anything that the City can do, to allow businesses to do business under these really crazy circumstances," says Blumberg.The City Council says they're looking into options and has allowed restaurants to add seating on the sidewalks. But in their last council meeting, they decided not to close portions of Cedros Avenue to traffic, which would have allowed businesses in the popular design district to expand even more.Other business owners say they'd like the local government to play more of an advocate role, marketing the city and bringing awareness of what has reopened. Sixty-five years ago today, a Black woman from Tuskegee, Alabama changed the course of American history.Rosa Parks, then 42, was arrested on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama on Dec. 1, 1955, when she refused to give up her seat to a white man. Parks had willfully violated the city's segregation laws, and her actions inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott — a movement that thrust Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. onto the scene as a civil rights activist.At the time, segregation laws in the Jim Crow south required all Black passengers to sit in a certain section in the back of city buses. The law also required that Black people give up their seats to white people should the buses fill up.According to the History Channel, Parks was sitting in the first row of the Black section of a fully-loaded Montgomery city bus. When a white passenger boarded, he asked that Parks stand up and give him her seat. She refused and was promptly arrested.According to History Channel, Parks' defiance was spontaneous — but she was also aware that local civil rights leaders had been planning to challenge segregation laws on public transportation.Parks was quickly bailed out of jail by local civil rights leaders, and the NAACP and other Black leaders immediately called for a boycott of the city bus system. For 381 days — over a year — Black people in Montgomery chose to walk rather than ride the bus to oppose the city's racist laws.The boycott placed financial pressure on the city and put the push to end segregation in the national spotlight.It wasn't always easy — city leaders and vigilantes retaliated against the Black community in Montgomery — King's home was firebombed, peaceful protesters were arrested and many Black people in the city lost their jobs.But at the same time, the King-led Montgomery Improvement Association filed a lawsuit in the hopes of challenging segregation on public transportation.The following June, a federal court declared that segregation on public transportation was unconstitutional, and the Supreme Court upheld the ruling that December.In addition to marking a win for Civil Rights across the country, the Montgomery Bus Boycott launched King onto the national scene. He would later push for further integration and help install voting rights legislation that helped Black people let their voices be heard.But it was Parks' bravery to stand up against oppression that served as the spark that ignited a bonfire of change. She served as an inspiration for all Americans until her death in 2005 at the age of 92. 2549

September Buys, a teacher in Michigan, says she doesn't really like garage sales, and that should tell you just how far she will go to help her students this year.Buys, an art teacher at Crossroads Middle School in Grand Rapids, said she was feeling helpless about all the uncertainty surrounding the school year-- and decided to channel her frustration into cleaning."I just started cleaning out my closet, because that felt better, just to let some things go," she said. "I made a pile, and then I moved onto the girls’ closet, and then I moved onto the toy room, and just this pile grew and grew and grew.”The idea came to her to hold a garage sale to give away the items. She also reached out to the community on Facebook, asking if others had items they wanted to contribute as well.Instead of selling what's been collected, Buys asked people to donate art supplies or purchase items off the Amazon wishlist she created to help her students.“I think it’s really, really important for people to connect with each other and be kind to each other and if you have something extra, why not share it? Things are things… I think what’s more important for me right now is to make sure that my students are cared for and that they have the things they need to feel like they can express what’s going on, they can kind of get some of that stuff out, and the more materials and stuff I have for my students, the better.”Buys plans to take all the art supplies to create individual 'art kits' for her students."We always need help with purchasing supplies – but this year especially, whether the kids are at home or whether they’re in person, they’re not going to be able to share supplies in the same way. I can’t take one package of pencils and put it in the middle of the table for kids to share anymore.
