There was plenty of controversy in the world of air travel in 2018. Most recently, passengers on Republic Airlines flight 3466 operating as United Express from Houston to Cincinnati are questioning why a captain did not land the flight after a woman began having seizures almost immediately after takeoff. According to WCPO television station in Cincinnati, video shows another passenger aiding the woman throughout the entire flight. The passenger in the video is being hailed as a hero as he helped keep the other passengers calm during the incident, which lasted for more than two hours.Republic Airlines operating as United issued a statement saying the passenger was transported to the hospital once the flight landed, and those offering her care in the air were assisted by an on-call medical service crew members.United has not been without its share of headlines this year. In May 2018, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Nigerian woman who was kicked off a flight from Houston to San Francisco after a white man complained she was "pungent." The incident happened two years ago; the lawsuit was filed in 2018 in federal court in Houston. The entire family was removed from the flight, which was part of their travels to Canada, where the family's children were to go to school.Other United incidents in 2018: 1333

There are more than 50 deaths per year in the U.S. that happen during police encounters with people carrying toy firearms. In an effort to prevent it from happening in Sioux City, Iowa, city council members there have voted to adopt an ordinance that bans some toy guns from being carried. The Associated Press reports Police Captain Mark Kirkpatrick said officers have had multiple encounters with replica weapons. They are faced with the question of whether to use deadly force in those situations. The toy weapons ban in Sioux City includes pellet and BB guns. The ban does not cover Nerf or squirt guns, or guns that shoot suction-cup darts, the AP reports. 676

There are now 286 cases of possible and confirmed acute flaccid myelitis in the United States this year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That includes 116 confirmed cases of the rare polio-like illness, also known as AFM, that leads to sudden onset of paralysis. That's 10 more confirmed cases than the agency reported a week ago. An additional 170 possible cases of AFM are under investigation.More than 90% of the 440 patients with AFM since 2014 have been children younger than age 4. Most of the children with confirmed cases experienced a viral illness with symptoms including fever and cough about three to 10 days before the onset of paralysis, the CDC said this month. 715

They are everywhere.Residents in the Dobson Ranch neighborhood of Mesa say they're fed up with the number of feral cats that are roaming the neighborhood.  Alan Robinson, who has lived in the community for more than 20 years said the problem started about four or five years ago. "There was one time I opened my door and I counted 35 cats on my front lawn," said Robinson. Now with cats mating, neighbors reported seeing dozens of kittens also roaming the streets. Robinson said these cats were urinating and defecating on front lawns, planters, by front doors, and in backyards. He says cushions on his backyard patio furniture that were coated with a thick layer of cat hair. During an interview, a cat appeared out of nowhere in the backyard and jumped onto a wall.Robinson said he had installed spikes on parts of his backyard wall to keep the cats away.Another resident said he had to buy expensive chemicals to treat his yard because of the waste left behind."When I try to mow the lawn the smell is so strong, I'm inhaling it. I've had to buy masks so I don't breathe it in," resident Jim Jarvis said.Residents believed the feral cats were attracted to their neighborhood for a reason."The problem statement is not that we have feral cats. The problem statement is that some people feed those feral cats. They call this place home," Robinson said.Pictures and videos of the feral cats taken by residents in the community showed at least eight cats sitting in the backyard of one home, by a swimming pool. Another woman who asked us not to identify her shared photos and videos of almost a dozen cats sitting on a neighbor's front lawn.Other pictures taken by Robinson showed cats on the sidewalk, cats sleeping on top of parked cars, on the roofs of homes. One cat appeared to have several large lumps on it's back.Robinson said he had done a lot of research that showed the health hazards in communities with feral cats.He pointed to a study published in "Trends in Parasitology" showing cat feces can be a source of parasites that can affect humans and other animals in the neighborhood. However, most Phoenix-area shelters will not take in alley cats, as they are considered free-roaming creatures, unlike dogs. Some animal advocates say feral cats can live healthy lives outdoors. Most Arizona counties have Trap-Neuter-Return programs for feral cats, calling it the best way to control the growing population of alley cats in the community. The Animal Defense League runs a trap, neuter and return program in Arizona. Officials ask those interested in the program fill out a form on their website.According to information posted on the site, the number of animals killed in local shelters has decreased since their predecessor started the Spay Neuter Hotline.  2829

They say everything's bigger in Texas, and that apparently includes truck decals.A Texas sheriff on Wednesday suggested criminal charges are possible for the owner of a white truck that bears a profane message for President Donald Trump and his supporters, sparking a debate about the line between obscene words and freedom of speech."F*** TRUMP AND F*** YOU FOR VOTING FOR HIM" reads the decal in bold white letters. A hand with a middle finger extended sits in the middle of the decal. In a post on Facebook, Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy E. Nehls said he had received numerous calls about the offending sticker. The truck is often seen along FM 359, a state highway near Richmond, Nehls wrote. He asked for tips on the identity of the truck's owner and said he would "like to discuss it" with the owner."Our Prosecutor has informed us she would accept Disorderly Conduct charges regarding it, but I feel we could come to an agreement regarding a modification to it," Nehls wrote. The Facebook post was no longer visible Thursday morning after it was removed or the privacy settings changed. In the comments, Nehls also had posted the legal definition of disorderly conduct in Texas.A disorderly conduct charge targets a person who intentionally "uses abusive indecent, profane, or vulgar language in a public place" or "makes an offensive gesture or display in a public place" that "tends to incite an immediate breach of the peace." 1440
