BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has vowed to provide foreign experts serving China with better working and living conditions.     Wen made the remark in meeting with 50 chosen foreign specialists and their families at the Great Hall of People here on Monday, in which he issued the experts Friendship Award of the year on behalf of the Chinese government. They have been engaged in journalism, agriculture, education, health, engineering and other specialties.     The Chinese government has given the award to 999 foreign experts from 58 countries since 1991.

BEIJING, May 28 -- China's economy can maintain a steady growth above 8 percent for a relatively long period because of a stable society, a vast market and ample capital, said Cheng Siwei, an economist and former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.    "China's economy can stay in the fast developing track if we work hard and pay enough attention to existing problems," Cheng said at a three-day forum with the theme of "Economic globalization and the choice of Asia: transition, growth and welfare" Wednesday in Shanghai.     "Social stability is crucial to economic development while China has a market of 1.3 billion people, which creates a huge consumption power," said Cheng. "Meanwhile, China's foreign reserves have reached US.68 trillion, and it has built up an ample capital pool."     China also beefed up its efforts to improve education and expand its coverage, which paved the way for sustainable economic development, he said, but added that there were problems China could not afford to ignore. The income of urban residents has tripled that of rural households while the purchasing power in cities was four times larger than that in rural areas.     China faced increasing pressure to protect the environment and in securing raw materials and resources for its economy. LANZHOU, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Inspectors had found poisonous chemical in the Sanlu infant formula produced by one of its partner producers in northwest China's Gansu Province, an official said on Sunday.     Two out of the 12 samples randomly selected from the Sanlu milk powder produced by the Haoniu Dairy Co., Ltd. in Jiuquan City had tested positive for melamine, said Xian Hui, vice-governor of Gansu.     "The products of Haoniu have been sealed up," he said.     The test was conducted after the Sanlu Group, a leading Chinese dairy producer based in northern Hebei Province, admitted that it had found some of its baby milk powder products were contaminated with melamine, a chemical raw material strictly forbidden by the country to be used in food processing.     As of Saturday, a total of 432 babies throughout the nation have been sickened with kidney stones after drinking the contaminated milk powder.     Haoniu was founded in 2002 with the registered capital of 51 million yuan (7.45 million U.S. dollars). Its production was in line with the Sanlu standard and its products use the Sanlu trademark.     As of Saturday night, Gansu has reported 102 cases of infant kidney stone caused by the Sanlu milk powder. Two babies have died, Xian said.     The province has so far seized altogether 164,000 packs of Sanlu milk powder.

BEIJING, May 11 -- China's monetary authorities are struggling to address conflicting policy goals, but inflation will remain the top policy concern, the country's central bank governor said on Saturday.     While the United States and other countries are more focused on fending off a recession, China's monetary policy must target inflation over growth and employment, Zhou Xiaochuan, the People's Bank of China governor, told a forum in Lujiazui, Shanghai's financial center.     "There is no cure-all medicine, and we have to make the final decisions -- everyone hopes there would be a cure-all solution, but there is not," said Zhou.     China's consumer price inflation would likely to rise to 8.5 percent in April from 8.3 percent in March, two sources familiar with the data said late on Thursday. The data, which is subject to last-minute revisions, will be officially released on Monday. Your spirit has touched all Chinese people. I hope you will soon go back to your normal lives and build a better home."     At Dujiangyan Radio and Television Station, Li urged the technicians to repair the network as soon as possible to ensure that the people in the quake zone could enjoy radio and TV programs.
