Darell Salondaguit has twelve surveillance cameras posted around his home at the corner of 15th Street and Imperial Beach Boulevard. He was taking a shower around eleven p.m. Monday when he heard a noise. "We heard a really big thud and thought it was cats in the backyard," said Salondaguit.When he woke up Tuesday morning, he discovered his wooden fence, potted plants, and palm tree were severely damaged. "Just a tire flying across from over there, crashing through here," described Salondaguit.The tire flew off of a car on Imperial Beach Boulevard, rolled across 15th Street and crashed through his fence. The cameras also show a man and a woman, casually step over the damaged fence, pick up the tire and leave."They had to come through the yard and get their tire, they didn't bother knocking or anything," said Salondaguit.He filed a report with the Sheriff's Department and hopes the people responsible will come forward."It was like really scary, cause I tend to check the plants at nighttime to see if they're properly watered because we have an automatic watering system. In an episode of his widely popular podcast that was released on Thursday, Joe Rogan repeated the debunked claim that left-wing provocateurs had been arrested for setting wildfires in Oregon.Last week, rumors began spreading on social media that left-wing activists, anti-fascists and members of the right-wing group The Proud Boys were responsible for setting at least some of the wildfires that are currently ravaging the state.The online rumors prompted social media posts from several local law enforcement agencies in which they debunked the rumors and asked local residents to refrain from spreading disinformation. The Douglas County Sheriff's Department even said that rumors of antifa-sparked wildfires caused their emergency disptach system to become overrun.Even the FBI debunked the rumors in a press release on Sept. 11."FBI Portland and local law enforcement agencies have been receiving reports that extremists are responsible for setting wildfires in Oregon. With our state and local partners, the FBI has investigated several such reports and found them to be untrue," the FBI's statement read.But in an episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience" released Thursday, the podcast host repeated the debunked claim to millions of listeners."I actually love Portland, it's one of my favorite places to perform. In a little more than a decade, more than 40 million diabetics worldwide could be left without insulin, the drug that is needed to help control the disease. It's a dire prediction from a study published in the journal Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology that could have life-altering consequences. Health expert Dr. Dahlia Wachs likened insulin to being the key to a door. In most people, it's a naturally occurring hormone the pancreas secretes when we eat sugar so that it can go from the bloodstream and into our cells.But it's a different matter for the millions of people whose bodies either don't make insulin or who have insulin resistance."Type 1 diabetics — they are very dependent on insulin," Wachs said. "They don't make insulin. They get very skinny and we have to give them insulin. There really isn't a lot of other treatments for these Type 1 diabetics.”A shortage of insulin in drug form poses major challenges. "So those with Type 2 diabetes, many of them can take pills, but if they are in poor control we have to give them insulin," Wachs said.Wachs said insulin is expensive to make. She says only three major pharmaceutical companies make it. And the demand isn't the highest here in the United States but other parts of the world, including Africa and Asia. However, the U.S. will have the third highest number of people living with diabetes by 2030.Diabetes is growing at an epidemic rate in the U.S. More than 12 percent of the adult population in Nevada is diabetic, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Every year, 10,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes and an estimated 75,000 have diabetes and don't know it. "So what can we do to prevent the shortage?
